Ralph Lyman Hedley
(1892 - 1968) and
Alta Marjorie Arries (1895 - 1982) Pedigree Descendancy
Ralph Lyman Hedley was born April 13, 1892 in Blackjack, Douglas
County, Kansas, the youngest of the three children of James Hedley and
Emma Hays. Although Frank had four older siblings, John R., James U.,
George W. and Mary Margaret were in their twenties when Ralph was born.
His full brother and sister, Frank and Ethel, were 13 and 6
respectively. Some time before 1900 (when Frank would have been 8)
James, Emma, and their three youngest children moved from Black Jack,
Kansas to a farm in Minnesota. In 1910 Ralph, age 18, was living with
his parents, sister and brother, working as a farm labourer on the
family farm in Fairfax Twp., Polk Co., Minnesota (See Chap. 4,6 for
1910 Census).
Eventually all three children of James and Emma were married in
Crookston, Polk Co., Minnesota. Ethel was married in 1911 and Frank in
1915.
Ralph Hedley married Alta Marjorie Arries June 21, 1919.
Alta Marjorie was born July 24, 1895 in Crookston, the daughter of
Frank Alexander Arries and Anna G. Bennerd (or Benner). (Please see
Addendum #1 for the forebears of Alta Marjorie Arries)
After their marriage Ralph and Alta Marjorie moved to Santa Ana,
California. Less than a year after their Minnesota marriage Ralph
and Alta appeared on the California Census:

Ten years later, Ralph and Alta had two daughters, ages 6 and 9, Ralph

In 1929 Ralph and Alta bought a five-acre ranch in Vista. Joan
(Crabtree) Bachman, granddaughter of Frank, reports that her
grandparents grew avocados and grapefruit. They later also raised
chickens for their eggs. Joan, who presently also lives in Vista,
California, comments, "So I am close to my roots, which gives me great
pleasure and comfort."
Ralph Lyman Hedley, born in Black Jack, Douglas Co, Kansas April 13,
1892, died Dec. 22, 1968 in Vista, San Diego, California at age 76.
Alta Marjorie (Arries) Hedley, born July 24, 1895 in Minnesota, died
fourteen years after her husband, on Sept.10, 1982 in Long Beach, Los
Angeles, California.
Ralph and Alta Hedley had two daughters, gen. (v):
(1) Dorothy Anna
Hedley, b. Nov. 15, 1920 married Hobart Lovelle Crabtree
on July 30, 1944, right after his return from WW II in the Pacific,
where he was a
survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. (Please see Addendum #2 for

Dorothy and Hobart Crabtree had two children, gen. (vi):
[1] Ann Lorraine Crabtree*, b. Dec.16, 1946, married Steven
Ephraim Turner on April 6, 1974 in Berkeley, California.
In 1977 they moved to Indianapolis, Indiana.

a cousin of Hobart Crabtree, who married Eleanor's elder sister Dorothy.

Bertha was working in a

Alta Marjorie Arries was the daughter of Frank Alexander Arries and
Anna G. Benner (or Bennerd). Frank Alexander Arries, Alta’s father, was
the son of William Arries and Cresenzia (Crissey) Vogt (Alta’s paternal
grandparents).

Arries married Hobart Crabtree July 30, 1944. Hobart, born abt. 1916,
was the son of Clinton Crabtree, born May 28, 1875, died July 18, 1953 (Cal.
Death Index). Hobart Crabtree’s mother was Bessie M. (–?–), born
abt.1879. Clinton and Bessie Crabtree were married abt.1902.
The maiden name of Clinton Crabtree’s mother (Hobart’s paternal
grandmother) was “Hoyt.”
The Crabtree family appeared on the 1920 Census for California when
