Thomas Hedley was the third son of Nicholas
Hedley and Jane McBride, having been preceded by his brothers William
and
John Henry. Thomas was born July 13, 1840 in the newly constructed
stone
house on Lot 18, Conc. 4 of March Twp., Carleton County (near Ottawa).
The 1851 Census for March Township shows him at age 11, a labourer,
also
attending school. Besides his mother and his father, who was the owner
of a saw mill, seven brothers and sisters ranging in ages from one to
fourteen
years shared the stone house with him.
Sometime before 1862, when Thomas was in his
teens, his parents and eleven brothers and sisters left Carleton County
and moved to West Wawanosh where his father gained employment as a
miller
besides farming Lot 16, Concession 10, adjoining the mill property.
Thomas
apparently remained behind in Carleton County, for his marriage
registration
shows Thomas Hedley “of March Township, Carleton County.”

Anglican

On the 17th of Feb, 1908 the newspaper, The Signal, for Crewe,
a community south
of Lucknow, contained the following item (provided by Phyllis Morrison
of R.R. # 1, Lucknow):
Sudden Death - The call of death came suddenly on Thursday last to Thomas Hedley, who was engaged by Thos. Henry to help with the chores. After partaking of dinner on that day he sat down in a rocking chair and took out his pipe as usual to prepare for a smoke, and expired in a few minutes. Heart trouble is supposed to be the cause. Deceased was a son of the late Nicholas Hedley of Lucknow. His relatives from Lucknow removed his remains for burial in Kinloss Cemetery. |
Thomas Hedley died
February
13th, 1908 at age 67 years and 7 months. Mary Ann, if still living,
would
have been about 62.
Their children would
all have reached adulthood, the youngest, Pearl, being 22 and the
eldest, Lucy, 40. His relatives from Lucknow were probably his younger
brother, Alexander Hedley and his wife Thomisine Fisher. Alexander was
killed only four months later in an accident caused by runaway horses
at
the arena corner in Lucknow. There is no record of Thomas's grave in
South
Kinloss Cemetery.
