THE HUBLARD-HUBLER-HUBLAR FAMILY
Peter Hublard (31 Jul 1808 to 11 Feb 1892) and Celestine Berchamp Hublard (Jul 1818 to 14 Feb 1890) came to the United States of America from Switzerland.
The older six children were born in Switzerland: Francis (1839-1915), Joseph (abt 1844-1866), Sylvester (1844-1922), Xavier (abt 1847-1899), Julius (1848-1909), and Henry (1851-1904). The seventh, Peter (abt 1853-abt 1939), was born in New York before the family came to New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana. The two younger children for whom I have records, Philomena (1854-1929) and Adolph (1859-1945) appear to have been born in New Albany.
Peter Hublar appears in the 1860 U. S. Census in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana. He was a farmer, and had real estate valued at $900. The family were communicants of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and Peter and Celestene are buried in the Holy Trinity cemetery, as are Xavier, Julius, Henry, and Peter.
Peter Hublard may have used variations of spelling for his surname. His descendants have used Hublard, Hubler and Hublar. I have modified the spelling to Hublar for all of his descendants in my files. Please be aware that some use variant spellings, especially Hubler.
Beth’s father was Maurice Raymond Hublar, known to our children as “Pappy.” Maurice was the son of Henry Ebbert Hublar and Elizabeth Margaret Kaiser Hublar, and was born and raised in New Albany, Indiana. Here he and Margaret “Peggy” Anne Huffman Hublar also raised their family: my wife Beth and her older brother Mike. When Maurice “retired” from his sales career in 1977 they purchased rental property in historic Madison, Indiana — and then launched into a career as innkeepers and owners of the Historic Broadway Hotel and Tavern. It was the oldest continuously operating hotel in the state of Indiana. Later they purchased “Windy Point,” a home above the Ohio River which was designated as the second highest elevation in Indiana. In that memorable location our children — Maurice and Peggy’s grandchildren — have many wonderful childhood memories. To the memory of a great father-in-law this Hublar research is dedicated.
