This is the page she wrote about her life in her family history book: `Grandfather Henry Soechtig came to the United States in 1855, when he was 19 years old. There are now six generations here in the U.S.A. God has been good to us when we consider the beginnings of some of our ancestors and the present day conception of Christianity. The future generation may be interested in this `Family Tree`. From my earliest childhood, the only home I remember is that of my granparents. The earliest recollections date back to when I was about four years old. I can see Grandma as she carried my baby sister Hazel into the kitchen; Mamma placed a blanket on the table and little Hazel was laid up on it.She had just died. Mamma held sister Emma and I up to kiss her little hands. That was the one thing I remember most vividly and the death of Grandma four years later. That made me realize the need and love of a father I could not remember. I attended the Sentienial School until I passed the eighth grade, then went to St. Boniface. While there I made my First Communion when I was thirteen. In my third year there, the doctor said my sister`s life depnded on taking her to a higher altitude. My mother had a friend in St.Cloud, MN so it was there we went. Mrs. Bessette became my mother's dearest friend and through her, Mamma met and married Jacob Abfalter. Adele Bessette and I formed a warm and lasting friendship. We still try to see one another every year. She loved our children dearly and they returned her affection. Moving to Minnesota was of little avail as far as Emma`s health was concerned, for in less than two years, she died of Spinal Meninggitis. Just at the age when we could have meant so much toeach other. I took the Minnesota State High School Exams, also entrance exams at St.Cloud Teachers College. Went there two terms and received TeachersCertificate, had two happy years of teaching, then married. Mamma was living on a farm, and I really loved it, the woodlands, birds andflowers. When we married I naturally wanted to live on a farm. It was awonderful place to raise our family. In 1938 Adolph`s health began to fail, so we moved to Princeton, MN. Lived there a short time when WWII struck. We knew the sorrow of little Frederic`s death, but the shock of Emmett`s was almost too much for us to bear. Now in my 80th year, I am still praying for peace and freedom of depression. I hope this copy of our family history will be perpetuated by our dearly beloved children.18

In the 1900 census Mildred was living at her grandfather, Henry Soechtig's house. Along with her mother and sister, Emma. 34

In the 1910 census Mildred was living with her Mother, and father-in-law, Jacob Abfalter and his three children from a previous marriage.35

BRAINERD - Funeral services were held Thursday, September 8, 1988, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Duelm, for Mildred Herbst, 99, formerly of the Duelm area, who passed away Tuesday, September 6, at Woodland Acres Health Care Center. The Rev. Robert Harren officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Arrangements were by the Foley Funeral Home.
Mildred Herbst was born January 7, 1889, in Evansville, Ind., to Edward and Ella (Soechtig) Mauntel. She married Adolph Herbst June 22, 1910, in Duelm and the couple farmed in St. George Township, Benton County, many years before moving to Princeton in 1940 where they owned and operated a cafe. She moved to Denver, Colo., in 1971 and to Detroit Lakes in 1983. She was a member of the Moorhead VFW Auxiliary, Princeton American Legion Auxiliary and a Gold Star Mother. Survivors include daughter and sons, Mrs. Aletha Kapsner, Denver, Colo.; Eugene, Hemet, Calif.; Basil, Brainerd; 17 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband May 15, 1957; sons, Fredrich, Emmett, Lorenz and Alan; and two sisters.
Pallbearers were Lorenz Thuerbach, Kenneth Blattner, Edmund and Leonard Herbst, Ralph Corrigan and Bob Kroska. 36
