My husband's ancestor, William Harvey Sr.'s (born 1749 in Orange Co., VA) parentage is a mystery, and we're trying to find other Harveys of that time period who might be connected to his William Harvey Sr. After much work, we've discovered several Harveys are connected to William, but we're not always sure how exactly. To make a long story short, the Thomas Harvey, born in April 1768 and who was the Baptist minister who died in Knox Co., TN, is either a youngest brother to my husband's William, or his son. Sonny (Claude S. Harvey of Oliver Springs, TN) is excited about a will that a Samuel Smith (died in 1797 in Halifax Co., NC) left where he mentioned his children, among whom were a Molley Harvy and a Sukey Smith. Can you tell me who Molley Smith-Harvy married?
There is a John Harvey Senr found in Surry Co., NC (living close to William and another John Harvey Junr), who we William Harvey Sr researchers believe is his father. Since William was born in 1749, this John would have to have been born around 1720 or so. Does this John Harvey/Hervey fit in with your early Thomas Hervey (i.e., brother, etc.?)

In trying to sort out the Harveys of NC and TN I was reading your web page about
Rev. Thomas Harvey of Knox Co, TN. I have taken the liberty of copying a
few things from that page so that I might better explain my thoughts. I am
researching the Rev. War Soldier, William Harvey b 1749 Orange Co, VA m
Lenah Gentry d 1836 Roane Co, TN. I have been reading some of Mable
Thornton's papers and wanted to mention a few things to you. Everything I
state as fact below comes from her papers except my Lemuel Harvey being the son
of Jonathan who is the son of William b 1749. Mable never figured out what
became of Lemuel (at least not in the papers I have) but he moved to DeKalb Co,
MO in 1848. The earliest records that have been located on Thomas Harvey in
Surry Co. are an 1800 tax list, showing a Thomas Harvey residing in Capt.
Hudspeth's Dist., with 260 acres of land and 1 poll; and two deeds, dated 14
Jan. 1800, recorded in Deed Book K, pages 50-51, which show that Thomas Hervey,
of Surry Co., NC, bought two tracts of land from Meshack Gentry William had a
son named Thomas and the above could very well be his son as William's wife was
a Gentry. This is my speculation. The census shows a Thomas Harvy of Surry
Co. with the following residents of his household: male, age 26-45 [Thomas];
female age 26-45 [could be Sarah]; 2 females ages 10-16 [could be daughters
Sally and Matilda]; and 3 males age 10 or under [could be sons Thomas, John, and
? ]. I have not yet learned when William's Thomas was born, when he died or
where. I also do not know the names of his children or how many he had.
It is quite possible that researchers are confusing the two Thomas Harveys as
William b 1749 enlisted in the Rev. War in 1776 in Wilkes Co, NC, resided in
1780 Wilkes/Surry Co., NC. According to Mable and to Tax Lists there was a
Thomas Harvey in Roane Co, TN in 1812 (Tax List), 1817 (Tax List), 1821 (Militia
and Tax List) and 1821 Tax List. Are these the same man or two different
men being confussed with each other? It is difficult to pinpoint precisely when
Rev. Harvey moved his family to Tennessee. In fact they may have moved back and
forth between the two states. It is believed that Thomas and Susannah's first
child, Oney Sypress Harvey, may have been born in Washington Co., Tenn. in 1804;
but the census clearly shows that a Thomas Harvy was in Surry Co., NC in 1810.
One researcher(1a) found a deed record, dated 1814, showing that Thomas Harvey,
of Surry Co., NC, sold part of his land on Hunting Creek that he had purchased
in 1800. Thus, his ties to Surry Co. were not severed completely prior to 1814.
Looking at the reported birthplaces of his children, it would appear that by
about 1815 the family was permanently situated in Knox County, Tennessee I
believe one needs to study the deeds to see if it can be determined which Thomas
this applies to. >From family records(1c), the following are said to be
children of Rev. Thomas Harvey and his first wife, Sar(r)ah (Smith) Harvey:
I. Thomas Harvey, md. on 27 Sept. 1809 in Roane Co., TN to Rachel Carter.(1c)
I believe this Thomas to be the son of William and he is according to Mable.
II. Sally Harvey, md. 20 Apr. 1817 to Andrew Nail.(1c)
III. John Harvey, md. 13 Nov. 1827 to Abigial Cole.(1c)
This John is the son of Jonathan Harvey who is the son of William b 1749
according to Mable. Jonathan is the father of my Lemuel Harvey who married
Ann Ballard.
IV. Matilda Harvey, md. 24 Feb. 1829 to Jesse McKinney.(1c)
Matilda is the daughter of Jonathan, son of William b 1749 according to Mable.
(1c) Harvey, Jennie D. (Mrs. James R.), undated letter (probably ca. 1956) to
Mable H. (Mrs. Robert E.) Thornton, and typed notes of family groups with
hand-written additions. She cited dates from family Bible belonging to Josie
Harvey Cunningham.
So far, I have not found anything from Jennie Harvey in Mable's papers but I
certainly don't have anywhere near all of them. If you have a copy of them
I would love to see them.
If you can shed any light on this it would be greatly appreciated. In
trying to get William's line correct it is helpful if I can sort out the
information on him from the information of William's son Thomas. I am
enclosing the first three generations of William Harvey, Rev. War Soldier b 1749
Orange Co, VA. Not all of this information has been documented and there
is some question if Nancy Harvey who married Isham Young is the daughter of
William.
