AIDS FOR YOUR GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH?

For a number of years the editors of the Hervey Families of America (HFoA) Bulletin have been publishing articles about branches of the Hervey (and Harvey) families. Although many of the branches have been well documented, there are a number of them that may not have been researched and about which little seems to be published. Naturally the Bulletin has placed emphasis on those branches with descendants among HFoA subscribers.

A continuing goal has been to tie all related branches together into one big family tree so that it would be easy to see how subscribers are related. In the case of the Hervey/Harvey family which is traced back to Halifax County, NC circa 1765 and tentatively from there back to Northumberland County, Virginia circa 1701, this has been a formidable task. This is due to the large number of descendants and to their extensive, frequent movement through the generations. Nevertheless, a sizable family tree is now assembled with new branches frequently being added.

For most of the years of publishing the HFoA Bulletin, the editors have done research for the articles with two fundamental research aids, the long standing standard tools of the genealogist: the family group sheet and the pedigree chart.

The family group sheet provides space for information about three generations: a couple, their parents, and their children. A blank family group sheet is provided for your information (or copying and use). They come in various formats. Any format typically contains spaces for the relevant dates and locations of birth, marriage, and death for each family member.

The pedigree chart contains information about several generations of ancestors of an individual. It does not branch out into aunts, uncles and cousins but is restricted to only direct ancestors. Its benefit is that it gives a number of generations at a glance. A sample blank pedigree chart is also provided for you.

A most helpful approach used for only the past couple of years to piece this much of the Northumberland County, Virginia Hervey/Harvey Family together has been computerizing the available data. The collection of data comes from hundreds of sources across the United States. It comes from courthouses, national and state archives, libraries, cemeteries, subscribers and other family members from far and wide, and other Hervey/Harvey family researchers. The HFoA records are in notebooks and several full file cabinets. One of the most useful libraries is the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City. It has been the source of a significant amount of data. Another well used resource is the Clayton Library for Genealogical Research, a branch of the Houston (Texas) Public Library.

The computerization of all this data has been no small task, and indeed it continues as time permits. There are so many genealogy programs on the market that selection of one can become quite a task in itself. HFoA opted to use the program created and sold by the LDS Family History Library, called "Personal Ancestral File" or PAF. It cost only $35.00 and can be run from floppy diskettes or from hard disk, and offers a powerful and flexible capability of handling data.

There are two basic parts of the program. One is the Family History. It amounts to a giant

pedigree chart which allows the user to move through the generations backward and forward down various branches. As a person is added to this "Family Tree," facts are entered about the individual, viz. birth date and place, death date and place, marriage date and place, name(s) of spouse(s), and name(s) of child(ren). A simple word processor incorporated allows "notes" to be written about each person in the pedigree. Of course, any data can be changed or deleted as may become necessary.

Data can be printed in a number of ways, including the traditional pedigree chart and the family group sheet. All coded descendants of one ancestor can be listed if desired.

The second part of the program is a Research Data File. This has been particularly useful in HFoA research. The HFoA Research Data File contains a collection of information on Hervey/Harvey families not necessarily known to be related at the time of data entry. With this program, information is entered in fields: name, date, place, source. Information from many different sources can be sorted by any of these fields to organize it as desired.

Part of the program that HFoA has not used is its telecommunications, i.e., linking to other computers by telephone line and sharing data.

The following article could not have been compiled as completely as it is, were it not for the organizational aid provided by PAF.

HERVEY/HARVEY MIGRATION FROM HALIFAX CO., NORTH CAROLINA TO TENNESSEE
(CA. 1795-1830)

By Joyce P. Hervey

Much has been written about the descendants and possible ancestry of Col. Thomas Hervey (1740-1806) of Halifax, North Carolina. The family is of particular interest, because Thomas Hervey is an ancestor of the majority of subscribers to the Bulletin.

Thomas Hervey (Harvey), a colonial planter, owner of large land holdings and numerous slaves, a colonel in the Revolutionary War, left two families in Halifax, North Carolina, one by his wife Sarahann, and one by a Betty Pritchett. Thomas Hervey's descendants, many of whom moved to Tennessee, produced numerous offspring. Some of the lines have been well documented; others seem elusive. This article pulls together information on the movement of descendants of Col. Thomas Hervey of Halifax.

The Hervey family in Halifax, North Carolina may have come from Northumberland County, Virginia. A large number of Northumberland County, Virginia families did move to Halifax, North Carolina during the 1760-1775 time frame. Among this migration apparently were two young men, Thomas Hervey and William Hervey, who appear to have been first cousins. The first record found for Thomas Hervey in Halifax was in 1765 (Halifax, NC Deeds, Book 9, pp. 258f), and William is documented there by 1775 (Halifax, NC Deed Book 13, page 238).

Appearing in Halifax County records about the same time period was a John Hervey. John Hervey was of Northampten County, NC (1774), and/or Brunswick Co., VA (1775) each county being in the same vicinity as Halifax. John owned acreage in Halifax, Co. including land on Hawtree Creek that he got from Frederick Wommack about 1765 (Halifax, NC Deed Book 18, pg. 507) and land he purchased from a Frederick Wommack in 1775 (Halifax, NC Deed Book 13 pp. 300, 396). When he sold the initial plot of land in 1799, he was living in Washington Co., GA.

There may have been another John Hervey in Halifax besides the one mentioned in the deed records. A John Hervey appeared in Halifax on the 1785 state census and 1790-1820 federal censuses of Halifax. The John Hervey mentioned in the deeds apparently did not live continuously in Halifax, if at all.

No research on ancestors or descendants of John Hervey has been attempted. He did not seem to have close association with the cousins, Thomas and William Hervey. His name has not surfaced much in examined legal records other than deeds in Halifax. That does not demonstrate that John Hervey was not related to Thomas and William Hervey. If related, they did not seem to interact much in their legal dealings.

The following outline of the early generations of descent from William and Thomas Hervey concentrates on following the geography of the migration of the Halifax Herveys.

Descent of Thomas Hervey, Senior (b. ca. 1740, prob. Northumberland Co., VA, died 1806 in Halifax, NC)

(Note: the small raised number following the larger number represents the generation starting with Col. Thomas Hervey as generation 1, or with his cousin, William Hervey as generation 1, since these were the first generation to arrive in Halifax County, North Carolina)

Children of Thomas Hervey and his wife, Sarahann Hervey (from will, Halifax, NC Will Book 3, pg. 448) were:

12. William Harvey, Jun., born ca. 1766, died before 11 March 1803 in Halifax, NC, without a written will; however a nuncupative will was testified to by his father Thomas Hervey (Halifax, NC WB 2 pg. 394). William married Nancy Sullivant in 1788. After William's death, Nancy Harvey married Samuel Smith and they moved to Montgomery Co., TN (per M. L. Dawson in Harvey Connection, pg. 24).

Children of William and Nancy Harvey were:

13 James Harvey, born 1790/1800 (1800 census, Halifax, NC); died ca. 1815 (Dawson, pg. 23). Samuel Smith was Adm. of estate of James Harvey, dec.; estate was sold 2 May 1815, recorded ROMCT Book B (Dawson, pg. 27).

23 Zachariah Harvey, born 1790/1800 (1800 census, Halifax, NC); died in Miss. 10 Dec. 1814 shortly before the Battle of New Orleans. He made a will Dec. 9, 1814, and signed with a mark because he was too ill to sign his name (Dawson, pg. 23, 27 citing ?Montgomery Co., TN? WB B, pg. 225).

33 Elizabeth "Betty" Harvey, born 1790/1800 (1800 census, Halifax, NC). She married a cousin named Harvey (Dawson, pg. 23). Could this be the Elizabeth Harvey who died ca. 1813 in Montgomery Co., TN? An Adm. Bond was issued at the July court in 1813 to Zach. Harvey, adm. of Elizabeth Harvey, dec'd, who died without a will. Bondsmen were Samuel Smith and Jesse Sullivan (Dawson, pg. 19). Elizabeth is said to have had a son William (Dawson, pg. 27), who is probably the William S. Harvey, born ca. 1813, who was of Fayette Co., TN ca. 1840-1850.

[Note: The Wm. S. Harvey listed next is probably the Wm. alleged to be son of Elizabeth.]

14 William S. Harvey, born ca. 1813, TN; mar. Sarah (b. ca. 1815) (Fayette, TN 1850 census)

Children of Wm. S. & Sarah were:

15 Martha Harvey, b. 1834.

25 Mary Harvey, b. 1836.

35 Sarah Harvey, b. 1838.

45 Lidia Harvey, b. 1840.

55 George Harvey, b. 1842.

65 Simon Harvey, b. 1843.

75 Jesse Harvey, b. 1849, mar. 1866 to Nancy Rodgers in Fayette, TN.

43 Jesse Harvey, born 1790/1800 (1800 census, Halifax, NC). The first records of him in TN were deeds of Dickson Co. About 1826 Jesse was in Dickson Co. along with his brother Oney Harvey and his relative, Stephen Hervey (State of TN Cert. Nos. 1655 and 1656-1657-1658 and Dickson Co., TN Deed Book E, pp. 7, 8, 9). He moved from Dickson Co., TN, about 1837, the last year in which a deed transaction involving Jesse occurred (Dickson Co., TN, Deed Book F, pg. 182). Jesse was on the 1830 census in Dickson Co., TN, and was shown in Fayette Co., TN on the 1840 and 1850 censuses. He apparently died 1850/1860. The 1850 census listed Jesse's wife as Milla Harvey (born ca. 1781). She was several years (perhaps about 10 years) older than he. Milla probably had married him prior to 1830, as there was a female older than Jesse living in his household on all three censuses (1830, 1840, and 1850). No census showed children living with Jesse and Milla. Milla's childbearing years would have been over about 1825, so they may have had no children.

53 Rebecca Harvey, born 1790/1800 (1800 census, Halifax, NC). Published family records (Dawson, pp. 23, 27-30) show she was born 1795, died 8 Feb. 1863; married Joseph Morgan 18 Nov. 1813. Joseph (born 1789, died June 1864), a native of SC, was a merchant and served as constable and sheriff. They were of Stewart Co., TN. They had at least four children (per Dawson and given therein).

[Note:  Joseph M. Canon provided update on this family by email dated Oct. 25, 2000:  " Rebecca Harvey b. 1795, died 8 Feb 1863 married into my Morgan line via Joseph Morgan b. 1789 d. June 1864.  As indicated on your web site the couple married in Montgomery County, TN on November 18, 1813.  Your web site indicates that the couple had at least 4 children. Indeed they did.  They had 9 children as follows:

    1.  Matthew Morgan b. 1816
    2.  William H. Morgan b. 1823
    3.  Jane Morgan b. 1824
    4.  Martha J. Morgan b. 1826
    5.  Juda A. Morgan b. 1828
    6.  Zachariah H. Morgan b. March 18, 1830
    7.  Caroline T. Morgan b. 1832
    8.  Emily Morgan b. 1834
    9.  James M. Morgan b. 1827

I also have documentation indicating that Rebecca inherited 3 negroes from her mother.  She subsequently sold them to her son Zachariah in 1858 according to Dickson County, Tennessee documents that I have.  Your web site says that Joseph was a native of South Carolina, which came as a surprise from me.  I know that Joseph was the first son of  Matthew Morgan b. 1762 and Elizabeth Parker.  They also had 9 children.  However, we were expecting to see that the Morgan's also came from Virginia vice South Carolina."]

63 Onesiphorus Harvey, born 1790/1800 (1800 census, Halifax, NC). Onesiphorus was born 19 Jan. 1800; died 14 Sept. 1860; married twice, 1st to Martha Harvey (cousin), 2nd to Matilda Shad Owen (Dawson, pg. 23). Onesiphorus and Martha had 10 children; Onesiphorus and Matilda had 2 children. Oney moved to Dickson Co., TN with his brother Jesse and relative Stephen Hervey by 1829 (Dickson Co., TN Deed Book E, pg. 8). He remained in Dickson Co. until dying in 1860. He is listed on all Dickson Co. censuses from 1830 to 1860. His descendants have been extensively documented (Dawson, pg. 31f).

73 William Harvey, born 1801; died 1850/60; married Sarah Blount (born 1803) on July 10, 1824, in Halifax Co., NC (Dawson, pp. 23, 29). William was in Dickson Co., TN with his brothers Oney and Jesse ca. 1827 (Dickson Co., TN Deed Book F, pg. 266), 1830 (1830 census) and 1834 (Dickson Co., TN Deed Book F, pg. 445); in Fayette Co., TN, with brother Jesse (1840 census); and back in Montgomery Co., TN near his elderly mother, Nancy Smith (1850 census). William and Sarah (Blount) Harvey had five or more children (Mont., TN, 1850 census):

14 Blount Harvey, born 1830, TN. A marriage of Blunt Harvey to Sarah E. Sullivan on 10 Mar. 1868 was recorded in Fayette Co., TN.

24 Rebecca Harvey, born 1832.

34 Julia Ann, born 1838, TN.

44 Mary A., born 1840, TN.

54 Sarah, born 1842, TN.

64-74 Two possible daughters, born ca. 1828 and 1835 (1830 census, Dickson Co., TN; 1840 census, Fayette, TN).

22 Elizabeth "Betty" Harvey, born ca. 1767/8. She married Jesse Sullivant (born ca. 1770) in 1788 in Halifax. There are no deed records showing land transactions in Halifax by Jesse Sullivant. He did witness several deeds (Halifax Deed Book 17 pg. 63, 597, and Deed Book 19 pg. 110), showing him in Halifax from 1788 to 1793. The 1790 census of Halifax showed two possible children of Jesse and Betty, a male and a female. The family appeared on no census in Halifax after 1790.

Jesse and Betty are said to have moved to Montgomery Co., TN (Dawson, page 19). Deed records of Dickson Co., TN, showed that Jesse's father William Sullivant sold land in 1807 that he owned in Dickson Co., and Jesse witnessed the deed. So Jesse and Betty may have spent some time in Dickson Co. as well (Dickson Co., TN Deed Book A, pg. 205).

Montgomery Co., TN records (Dawson, pg. 19) showed in 1816, Jesse Sullivant was issued a Guardian Bond, making him legal guardian of William Sullivant Sen. (father of Jessie Sullivant). A Jesse Sullivant was on the 1820 census in Montgomery Co., TN. The age of the eldest male in the household was over 45 (born before 1775) (Jesse). There was no female of the appropriate age to be Betty, so she presumably had died prior to 1820.

Will books show that in 1822 Jessie Sullivant was appointed guardian of William Sullivant Senior. Jesse submitted inventories of items in the estate in 1822, 1824, and 1825. Purchasers of some of the items were Oney Harvey, Stephen Harvey, and James Hightower (Dawson, pg. 19).

A Jesse Sullivant was on the 1830 Census, but he was born about 1800/10, too late to have been the Jesse of Halifax Co. According to Dawson, Jesse sold all his land, Negroes, crops, and household items to his son-in-law, James Crockett, in 1827, and then apparently lived with the Crocketts for the remainder of his life.

[Note: The 1830 census of Montgomery Co., TN lists several Sullivant heads of household, some of which likely are sons of Jesse & Betty Sullivant, but could as well have been sons of Jesse's brother, William Sullivant Jr. Some of the names are: Bartlett (b. 1790/1800), Nathan (b. 1800/10), Williamson (b. 1800/10), Wilson (b. 1800/10). Wilson lived a short time in MS and moved by 1850 to Jackson Co., AR with some of his Harvey cousins].

Possible children of Jesse and Elizabeth (Harvey) Sullivant (from 1790 and 1820 census) were:

13 Female, born before 1790 (Halifax, NC 1790 census). Dawson (pg. 257) names daughter Catherine Sullivant, born 1791-died 1868 in Montgomery, TN. Married James Crockett (her sister's widower) ca. 1821/24. He was a large slave holder from Robertson Co., TN. (See Dawson, pg. 257 for descendants.)

23 Male born 1775/1794 (see note above).

33 Male born 1775/1794 (see note above).

43 Female born 1794/1804 (Mont, TN 1820 census). Dawson (pg. 257) names a daughter Elizabeth Sullivant, born 1799, died 1821 in Montgomery Co., TN, at age 22. She married James Crockett. (See Dawson pg. 257 for possible descendants.)

53 Male born 1794/1802 (Mont, TN 1820 census) (see note above).

63 Male born 1794/1802 (Mont, TN 1820 census) (see note above).

73 Male born 1794/1802 (Mont, TN 1820 census) (see note above).

83 Male born 1802/04 (Mont, TN 1820 census) (see note above).

93 Male born 1804/10 (Mont, TN 1820 census). A Jesse Sullivant, born 1800/10 was shown on 1830 census of Mont., TN, and could belong here.

32 Caty Hervey, born ca. 1769/70. By 1806 she was married to a Christie (Halifax WB 3, pg. 448). She apparently married Thomas Christie (Dawson, pg. 303). This marriage seems confirmed by the census records. Thomas was the eldest of the sons of Jesse Christie (Halifax WB 3, pg. 507) and the only one married and living apart from the family by 1800 (per the 1800 census). The 1810 census, lists Thomas Christie and his three brothers, William Christie, Jesse Christie, and Abishai Christie as heads of household in Halifax Co., NC. By 1820, Thomas Christie was no longer on the census in NC. If he died in Halifax he left no will that was recorded. In 1830 there were three younger men named Christie (Ezariah, William, and Elijah), presumably sons of Caty and Thomas, since earlier censuses showed they had six sons and a daughter. The brothers of Thomas Christie had smaller families or families born later than 1800.

Possible children of Caty and Thomas Christie were:

13 William Christie, possibly the male born about 1790 (1800, 1810 census, Halifax, NC). He was shown on 1830 census, head of household, age 40/50 (b. 1780/90).

23 Female, born 1790/1800 (1800 census, Halifax, NC). She was not on the 1810 census of Halifax so probably died in infancy.

33 Ezariah Christie, possibly a male born 1794/1800 (1800, 1810 census, Halifax, NC). In 1830 he was head of household in Halifax, age 30-40 (born ca. 1790/1800), with wife and one daughter.

43 Zachariah Christie, possibly a male b. ca. 1794/1800 (1800/1810 census, Halifax, NC). He married Morning Drake in Halifax on 4 Nov. 1822.

53 Male, born ca. 1794/1800 (1800 census, Halifax, NC).

63 Male, born ca. 1800/1810 (1810 Census, Halifax)

73 Hannon Christie, possibly a male born ca. 1800/1810 (1810 census, Halifax, NC. (This Hannon Christie could as well have been a son of one of Thomas Christie's brothers, Jesse or Abishai, who each had sons born 1800/1810). Hannon appeared in the 1830 Dickson Co., TN census as head of household, age 20-30 (born about 1800/1810). He was living next to a William Harvey and an Oney S. Sullivan. He likely had moved with relatives to Tennessee. Hannon had an older female age 40-50 (born ca. 1780/90) and three young females, under age 10 (born ca. 1820/30) living with him.

42 Sarah "Sally" Hervey, born about 1770/71. She was married to a Smith (Halifax WB 3, pg. 448) by 1806. Research by a Smith family descendant (Dawson, pp. 303, 309-310) indicates Sally Hervey married Thomas Smith. Thomas Smith received land and plantation in his father's will (Halifax, NC WB 3, pg. 285). Quoting from "A Brief History of My Ancestors", by Dallas Gene Smith, 13 Feb. 1989 (published in Dawson, pg. 309): "About 1806 Thomas Smith married Sarah "Sally" Harvey, a daughter of Thomas Harvey. This was probably a second marriage for Thomas; being born about 1767, Thomas would have been about forty years old at the time of this marriage, ... Only one Thomas Smith appears in the 1800 census of Halifax County, and this Thomas has a family of five children. It is very likely that the Thomas Smith living in Halifax County in 1803, who is married to Elizabeth Parker, and Thomas Smith who married Sarah Harvey, is one and the same.···Some time between 1800 and 1810, or later, the urge to move hit the County of Halifax, for many of the families there moved to Montgomery County, TN. The brothers Thomas and Samuel Smith were among those to do so. On 11 June 1807, near Clarksville, Thomas and Sarah had a son which they named Samuel. The records of Montgomery County reveal much information about Samuel and Nancy Smith, while on the other hand very little information is gained about Thomas and Sarah Smith. It appears that Samuel was much more prosperous than his brother Thomas. The records have revealed that Thomas died in 1840. The administrator of his estate was James Smith, who could be a son. A record of Sarah's death has never been found, but she had died before 1840."

Children of Sarah (Hervey) and Thomas Smith were:

13 Samuel Smith, born 11 June 1807, Clarksville, Montgomery Co., TN; died 27 June 1850, Buffalo Co., NE (on the Morman trail). He was married 25 Jan. 1835, in Henry Co., KY to Martishia Smoot. (See Dawson for descendants, p. 303-307.

23-63 Possible other children

52 Thomas Hervey, born about 1768/72, died about Feb. 1814, will probated Halifax, NC (Halifax., NC WB 3 pg. 548). He married Nancy Porter (Halifax., NC WB 3, pg. 502).

Children of Thomas and Nancy (Porter) Hervey were:

13 Polly Hervey

23 Oney Hervey, born ca. 1792; may be the Oney Hervey who was of Nash Co., NC (adjoining Halifax, NC) ca. 1820 (Halifax. Deed Book 25, pp. 136, 159, 241). He is probably the Oney Harvey who married Nancy Smith in 1817 in Halifax, NC. He is probably the same Oney Hervey who moved to Palmyra, Montgomery Co., TN by 1840, where he remained until his death after 1870. According to Dawson, Oney of Palmyra married Sarah "Sally" Smith (b. 1799, NC). (A marriage of Oney Harvey to Sally Harper was recorded in Halifax, NC on 22 May 1832. Are they the same?)

Children of Oney of Palmyra (per M. L. Dawson in Harvey Connection, pg. 313) were:

14 Joel Thomas Harvey, b. 1819, NC (not proven child. See Dawson, pp. 314+ for descendants.)

24 John Berry Harvey, b. 1824, d. Aug. 1849 (not proven child). No known descendants.

34 William Harvey, b. ca. 1826 (not proven child). In 1850 census he was living with family of Isham Harris in Montgomery Co., TN, working as an overseer.

44 Martha J. Harvey, b. ca. 1828, NC; no known marriage or descendants.

54 James M. Harvey, b. Mar. 1830, Montgomery Co., TN; married Nancy G. Powers in 1860. (See Dawson for descendants, pp. 319+.)

64 Nancy A. Harvey, b. 1833. (See Dawson for descendants, pg. 323.)

74 Gideon H. Harvey, b. 1837, d. 14 May 1894; married Sarah "Sally" Baggett in 1864. (Dawson shows offspring, pg. 340.)

84 Leander Harvey, b. 1839; married Lucy J. Baggett in 1860. (Two daughters, listed in Dawson, pg. 350.)

94 Rebecca Harvey, b. 1841. (Dawson speculates about marriage, pg. 354 .)

104 Sara Eliza Harvey, b. 1843; (See Dawson, pg. 354.)

33 William Hervey, born ca. 1794/98 in Halifax Co., NC. He did not appear as head of household on census until 1840 in Halifax, NC. Since his father died in 1813 (Halifax, NC WB 3, pg. 548) when William was in his teens he and his younger brother Raleigh may have been living with a relative. There were three marriages recorded in Halifax Co., NC of a William Hervey (or Harvey), one or all three of which could be this William. They were to Harriett Wreen on 3 Oct. 1821, to Nancy Brown on 14 Dec. 1830, and to Matilda Hawkins on 19 Nov. 1833. The 1840 Census of Halifax showed the following household members for William Harvey Jun.: male 40-50, i.e., b. 1790-1800 (William); female 30-40, i.e. b. 1800-1810 (wife) with the children listed below. William was not on the 1850 Census of Halifax.

Children of William Hervey (from 1840 Census, Halifax, NC) were:

14 Female b. 1820-1825

24 Male b. 1830-1835

34 Male b. 1830-1835

44 Male b. 1835-1840.

54 Male b. 1835-1840.

43 Rolley Hervey, born about 1800; married Nancy Whaley on 10 Oct. 1827 in Halifax. His name was on the 1830 and 1840 census of Halifax Co., but not afterwards. No land transactions in his name are recorded in Halifax.

53 John Hervey, a John Harvey appeared on the 1850 census of Halifax.

62 Hannah Hervey, born about 1770; married John Bull about 1794. They moved to Stokes Co., NC before 1800 (family records). In 1803 Hannah and John Bull had the State Legislature at Raleigh, NC change the last name of themselves and four of their children from "Bull" to "Randal." By 1818, they were in Franklin Co., GA, where Hannah died (family records of Jean Reynolds and Tom Jones).

13 Oney Cypress Bull/Randal (NC State Legis. records), born ca. 1795.; married Susanna. Oney and Susanna remained in Franklin Co., GA until his death in 1854 and her death about 1870/80. They had 15 children, all born in Franklin Co., GA:

32 Elizabeth "Betsy" Hervey Pritchett, born ca. 1784/94. She was not married at the time of her father's death in Feb. 1806 or at the time of the estate division in Nov. 1806, at which time she inherited 1/6 share of land and Negroes from Thomas Hervey, Sen. (Halifax WB 3, pg 448). Part of this land was already deeded to her and her siblings by deed of 22 Dec. 1802 (Halifax Deed Book 19 pg. 61). The estate division (Halifax Deed Book 21, pg. 62) showed Elizabeth Hervey Pritchett received 86 acres and 1 Negro in Nov. 1806. Elizabeth was married to Thomas Chappell Carstarphen about 1806/07, and they had two infant children by 1810 (1810 census, Halifax, NC). Thomas C. Carstarphen was named in his father's will (Halifax, NC WB 3, pg. 570) in 1815, and received 260 acres, Negroes, stock, etc. By 1820 they were not in Halifax. Betsy Carstarphen was still living in 1859, as she was named devisee in her brother Gideon Hervey's will (Halifax WB 5, pg. 89). As she resided "beyond the limits of this state" (of NC), it was required that publication be made in the Weldon Patriot for six weeks, notifying her to appear in Court to make herself a party to the contesting of Gideon's will by her sister Judith Daniel, if she so wished.

42 Judith "Judah" Hervey Pritchett; born about 1784/94 (1810 census, Halifax); she was not married at the time of her father's death in Feb. 1806 or at the time of the estate division in Nov. 1806, but by 1810 she was on the census with her husband Willis Daniel and 2 children under 10, so she must have married about 1807. Judith inherited 1/6 share of land and Negroes from Thomas Hervey Sen. (Halifax WB 3, pg 448). Part of this land was already deeded to her and her siblings by deed of 22 Dec. 1802 (Halifax Deed Book 19 pg. 61). The estate division (Halifax Deed Book 21, pg. 62) showed Judith Hervey Pritchett received 86 acres in Nov. 1806. Judith and Willis Daniel sold this land in 1811 to Thomas Harvey, Judith's half brother (Halifax Deed Book 22, pg. 6). Judith's husband Willis Daniel was mentioned in his father's will (Halifax WB 3, pg. 251). Willis Daniel died after 8 June 1828, on which date he signed his will (Halifax WB 4, pg. 46). Judith was still alive in 1859, as she appeared in court in Halifax as a devisee of the estate of her brother Gideon Hervey. She contested his will and lost her suit, and was required to pay court costs (Halifax, NC WB 5, pg. 89).

Children of Judith and Willis Daniel were:

13 Harriett Daniel, born about 1809-10 (1810 census, Halifax, NC).

23-?. Other child(ren), unnamed in will

52 Nancy "Nanny" Hervey Pritchett, born about 1784/1794. She married her cousin, Stephen Hervey between 1803 and 1806 (Halifax Deed Book 19, pg. 61 and Halifax WB 3, pg. 448). They moved to Hardeman and later Dickson Co., TN. No record of Stephen Hervey has been found past 1830 in TN. Perhaps Stephen died 1830/39, for a Nancy Harvey was married to Burgess Wall by Jordan Moore, Minister, on Nov. 9, 1839 in Dickson Co. Burgess Wall was a neighbor of the Herveys of Dickson Co. in 1830 (Dickson Deed Book E, pg. 7) and he was an elderly gentlemen around 60 years of age by 1839 (Dickson Co., TN 1830 Census).

62 Polly Hervey Pritchett, born ca. 1784/94. She was married to John Williams and had children prior to Feb. 1806 (Halifax WB 3, pg. 448). In 1806 John Williams was of Nash Co. (Halifax, NC Original Indemnifying Bond). The will cited above leads one to think that Polly was deceased at the time it was written, since it gave her share of the estate to her children; however, in the division of the estate of Polly's brother Gideon in 1859, she is named as a devisee, so she was apparently alive then. Polly's sister Judith brought suit in the Court of Common Pleas, challenging the authenticity of Gideon's will, and a citation was issued for Polly "one of the heirs at law and next of kin of said Gideon P. Hervey who resides in the limits of this state" to appear in Court if she wished to join Judith in the suit.

Children of Polly & John Williams were:

13 Grew H. Williams, born after about 1808. He sold land which came to him as an heir to Thomas Hervey, Sen. through his mother Polly Williams. He sold this land in 1827 to Holden Harvey (Halifax Deed Book 28, pg. 7).

Descent of William Hervey, Senior (b. by about 1745, prob. Virginia)

The five children of William Harvey, Sen. 11 (from will, Halifax, NC Will Book 4, pg. 5

12 William Harvey Jun., born about 1766; died after 1840 (Halifax, NC census, 1786-1840). It has been speculated that he was married twice and that his first wife died after 1790 and he married again about 1800. From Wills of Halifax Co., NC is found one possibility for a first wife, i.e., Molly Harvey, daughter of Samuel Smith, who died 1797 (Halifax, NC WB 3, pg. 285). This Smith family was closely associated with the Harvey family. If Molly (Smith) was, in fact, William's wife, it would account for how the name Samuel got into the Harvey family, and might also mean than Samuel Harvey below is an issue of William's first wife, not his second. [Note: The descendants of this family were in HFoA, Vol. 7 No. 4, Sept. 1991. That listing is revised somewhat herein.]

Possible Children of William Harvey Jun. and a possible first family:

[Note: The following Stephen Hervey, Thomas Harvey, and Joseph Harvey have not been proven to be sons of William Harvey, Jun.; however, after consideration of possible origins, your author concludes that most likely they are the sons of William Harvey Jun.]:

?13 Stephen Hervey; born about 1785/87; married his cousin, Nancy "Nannie" Hervey Pritchett by 1806; moved from Halifax, NC to Hardeman Co., Tennessee after 1819 (Halifax Deed Book 23 pg 245,) and before 1826 (TN Land Cert. No. 1655). He may be the Stephen Hervey who fought in the War of 1812 in the NC 5th Regt., 2nd Brigade (Toler, pp. 31-33). By 1829 he was of Dickson Co., TN. He signed a Power of Attorney on 19 Dec. 1829 authorizing his "friend and relation" Oney Harvey to sell his land in the 10th Dist. of Hardeman Co. because he was preparing to move (presumably to Dickson Co.). (Dickson Deed Book E, pg. 8). Stephen Harvey witnessed an indenture on 1 Oct. 1830 (Dickson Deed Book E, pg. 7), and that was the last entry in the deed books of that county bearing his name. In 1836 he was bondsman for his alleged half-brother, Abner Hervey, upon Abner's marriage. Stephen's name did not appear in the census in TN in 1830 or afterwards. Census records of Halifax, NC (1810) show Stephen and Nancy with two girls born about 1800-1810.

[Note: The following is possibly son of Wm. Harvey Jun., but might be Thomas Hervey 52, son of Wm. Harvey Sen.]

?23 Thomas Harvey, who died by about 1830, apparently leaving no heirs other than a wife Betsy. An unusual entry on the 1830 census of Halifax, NC showed Thomas Harvey's name; however, there was no white person enumerated, only free colored persons. Perhaps Thomas Harvey had recently died or was absent for some reason such as illness, and the colored people were running the plantation until disposal of the estate. An inventory of sales of the property of Thomas Harvey, dec'd, entered into records of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, showed the estate was sold 17 Dec. 1831 and the widow Betsy Harvey given her years provision, along with other housekeeping articles. Abner Harvey (brother or nephew) administered the estate.

?33 Joseph Harvey, (source for this name is Fayette Co., TN, Circuit Court Minutes, Civil & Criminal, May term 1843, pg. 56. Samuel Harvey, Joseph Harvey & Wm. Harvey filed suit against Abner Carroll. The court ruled since no process was served on the defendant in this cause and the plaintiffs do not claim to prosecute, the cause will be discontinued). A Joseph Harvey was married to Eliza Casso on Feb. 12, 1819 (NC State Archives, Marriage Notice of Halifax, NC, 6 Vols., notice of marriage published in Raleigh RR).

?Possibly Second Family of William Harvey, Jun.

[Note: The following list of children has been determined by the preponderance of evidence principal; i.e., more evidence has been found in favor of than against. The list has been compiled using deeds, census records, and marriage bonds to determine that the persons were closely related.]

13 Samuel Harvey, (see prior note above Stephen Hervey 12) b. about 1800/10 (Mont., TN 1830, Hardeman, TN 1840 census). Deed records of Halifax, NC show that Samuel was "of Hardeman Co., TN" 1840-43. He purchased household items, livestock, a wagon, and land from William Harvey of Halifax Co. in 1840. The final deed transaction involving Samuel was in 1843 (Halifax, NC Deed Book 32, pg. 108) in which he and William Hervey of Halifax, NC jointly sold land in Halifax to Gideon P. Hervey. Also in 1843 Samuel Harvey, Joseph Harvey and William Harvey filed suit in Circuit Court in Fayette Co., TN against Abner Carroll for unknown reason, and the case was discontinued by the judge. Samuel's whereabouts are unknown after 1843. Some of his brothers moved to Jackson Co., AR, and it is possible he moved on west with them, although he was not living near them in 1850. Perhaps he died shortly after 1843. Since his children were girls, his descendants have not been shown on censuses as heads of household and cannot be easily located, so it is unclear where to search for his family.

Possible children of Samuel were:

14 Girl, b. 1825/30 (Mont, TN 1830, Hdm, TN 1840 census)

24 Girl, b. 1825/30 (Mont, TN 1830 census)

34 Girl, b. 1835/40 (Hard, TN 1840 census)

44 Girl, b. 1835/40 (Hard, TN 1840 census).

23 Abner Hervey, married 1st Charity Pritchett in Halifax, NC on 20 Feb. 1821 (bondsman, William Harvey); married 2nd Winniford Duncan on 17 Jan. 1836 in Hardeman, TN (bondsmen Stephen Harvey). Winnie was born 1813 (Hdm, TN 1850 Census), making her about 12 years younger than Abner. Abner was on census as follows: Halifax, NC 1830; Hardeman, TN 1840-1870.

Possible children of Abner and Charity were:

14 Girl, born 1820/25, NC (Halifax, NC 1830 Census), probably born 1823/25, perhaps Elizabeth Hervey, who married Crawford Duncan Apr. 11, 1838 (Black, Hdm Marriage Records). [Note that Abner Harvey mar. Winniford Duncan in 1836. This marriage was probably between a relative (daughter?) of Abner and a relative of Winniford.]

24 Girl, born 1820/25, NC (Halifax, NC 1830 Census), probably born 1823/25. Perhaps this was Mary A. Harvey, who mar. Thomas D. Gray on July 13, 1838 (Black, Hdm Co., TN Marriages) [Possibly this was a daughter of Samuel Harvey instead of Abner Harvey. No further trace of them could be found in Hardeman Co., so they may have moved west with relatives].

34 Girl, born 1825/30, NC. Probably this was Arpa J., wife of George Franklin Smith. The Smiths were neighbors of Abner (Hdm, TN 1850, 1860 Census). In 1854 Abner & Winneyford W. Hervey deeded land to Levine Browning as security for indebtedness. The deed noted that the land was his homestead, that had been deeded to him in 1852 by Geo. F. Smith and his wife A. J. Smith (Hdm, TN Deed Book M, pg. 381).

44 Boy, born 1825/30, NC. Perhaps Thomas R. Harvey, born 1825 (Hdm, TN 1850 Census). He married Lucinda Jones in Hardeman, TN on June 1, 1848 (bondsman was A(bner). Hervey). Thomas and Lucinda were on the 1850 Census of Hardeman, TN with one child:

a. John Harvey, born 1849, Hardeman, TN.

54 Girl, perhaps Lavenia Hervey, born 1833, who married John A. Long in Hardeman Co., TN, on 20 Dec. 1848. Abner sold 97 acres land to Lavinia Long in 1874 (Hdm, TN Deed Book Y pg. 536). In 1870, L(avenia) Long was living in household of N. E. Wood in Hardeman, TN. She had three children with her who had all been born in AR. Perhaps they had moved to AR with relatives and her husband died there and she moved back to TN to be close to her father's family.

Possible son of Abner and Winniford Hervey was:

14 Boy born 1835/40 (Hdm, TN 1840 Census). Perhaps Thomas Harvey, born 1839 (Hdm, TN 1860 Census), who married Jane Cartwright on 22 May 1859 (bondsman Samuel S. Cowan). [It would seem strange for Abner to have two sons named Thomas; however, it has happened before. Consider that Abner's second wife, Winney was daughter of Thomas Duncan, and it would not seem strange that she would want to name a son Thomas. Abner's possible other son Thomas would have been from his first marriage.]

Proven children of Abner and Winniford (Duncan) Hervey were:

24 Amanda Hervey, born 1837, Hardeman, TN (Hdm, TN 1850 Census).

34 Margaret Hervey, born 1841, Hardeman, TN (Hdm, TN 1850 Census).

33 Jack Hervey; married M. Toney on 13 Sept. 1823 in Halifax, NC (bondsman Abner Hervey).

43 William M. Harvey, b. 1805, NC (Jackson Co., AR 1850 census). He married Mary Ann Joseph Blount on 10 July 1824 in Halifax, NC (bondsman Abner Hervey). They moved to Hardeman Co., TN in 1840 (Hdm, TN 1840 Census) and afterward to Jackson Co., AR by 1850.

Children (from Jackson Co., AR 1850 census) of William and Mary were:

14 Robert Harvey, b. 1830, NC.

24 Martha Harvey, b. 1829, NC (perhaps she is wife of Robert, since she is older but listed second).

34 Maria Harvey, b. 1831, NC.

44 Simeon Harvey, b. 1835, NC.

54 Benjamin Harvey, b. 1836, NC.

64 Abner Harvey, b. 1837, NC.

74 Mary Harvey, b. 1840, NC.

84 William Harvey, b. 1841, TN

94 Boy not named, b. 1850, TN.

53 Robert Harvey, born 1815, Halifax Co., NC (Jackson Co., AR 1850 Census). His wife was Elizabeth, born 1817, TN. They apparently lived in MS for a short time, as they had a daughter born there in 1837. They were in Hardeman, TN in 1840 and Jackson, AR in 1850. Their children (from the Jackson, AR 1850 census):

14 Rebecca Harvey, b. 1837, MS.

24 Albert Harvey, b. 1841, TN.

63 ? Francis Harvey (female) is mentioned in the 1825 will of William Harvey, Sen. (her grandfather) and could be a child of this William Harvey, Jun. or of Thomas Harvey (shown below); however, since the census records show that William Jun. had a daughter the appropriate age to be Francis, she is shown here. Francis Harvey married Sandy Crawley in Halifax, NC on 4 Sept. 1828 (bondsman J(eremiah) J. B___). Sandy W. Crawley's name was on the 1830 census of Fayette Co., TN, showing himself (male born ca 1800/10) and Francis (female born 1800/10). Also in the household was another female born 1800/10 and a female born 1810/15, both too old to be their children.

22 Mary Downin Harvey was named in her father's 1825 will, and was called Mary Downin Blackburn, wife of Asa Blackburn. Mary Harvey married Asa Blackburn on 23 May 1823 in Halifax. There were two wills recorded in Halifax for a Mary Blackburn, one written June 1830, probated Nov. 1830 (Halifax NC Will Book 4, pg. 67), and one written 7 June 1854 and probated in August 1854 (Halifax, NC Will Book 4, pg. 368). The earlier will named four sons; the latter will left the entire estate to a Robert Harvey and Mary Williams, wife of Presley Williams. It is difficult to conclude that Mary Downin Blackburn wrote the earlier will, based on the 1830 census, which showed in the household of Asa Blackburn only himself and a female (his wife Mary), but no children. Since they married in 1823, if they were going to have children they likely would have had some by 1830; yet the earlier will of Mary Blackburn who died in 1830 named four sons. The logical conclusion then is that Mary Downin Harvey Blackburn wrote the latter will in 1854 and apparently still had no children.

32 Lydia Harvey; mentioned in her father's 1825 will (Halifax, NC Will Book 4, pg. 5) as "Lydia Scoggins part to go to her living children", indicating she might have been deceased. She was married to William Scoggins, whom the will calls "son-in-law". The will also named the two granddaughters listed below. William Scoggins married Milly Moody on 11 Apr. 1825, supporting the presumption that Lydia was dead at the time her father wrote his will.

13 Mary Scoggins

23 Mourning Scoggins

42 Robert Harvey, died before 1824. In his father's will, probated in Halifax, NC in 1825, the remnant of the estate "to be equally divided into seven parts - ... Robert Harveys part to be equally divided among his living children", no names mentioned. However, Robert's wife's name was Martha Harvey ("Records of Estates of Halifax Co., NC, Vol. 1, Extant Loose Records 1816-1823, 1865-1900). Martha Harvey married Eby Whaley on 7 Jan. 1824 (Halifax, NC Marriage Records). Eby was paid out of the estate of Robert Harvey for boarding and clothing the orphans (Inventory and Account Sales of Halifax, NC of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, 1828, 1829, and 1831).

Children of Robert and Martha Harvey (from Halifax, NC Guardian Bond, 17 Feb. 1823) were:

13 Eliza Harvey, mar. Littleton Arrington on 8 Dec. 1830 (Halifax, NC Marriages). Eliza and Littleton Arrington received Eliza's share of her father's estate on 23 July 1831 (Halifax, NC Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions, Aug. term 1931).

23 Martha Harvey. A Martha L. Harvey married John Whitaker on 9 June 1831. Could it be she?

33 Mary/May Harvey. Could this be the Mary Williams, wife of Presley Williams, who inherited estate of Mary Blackburn in 1854 (Halifax Will Book 4, pg. 367)?

43 Stephen A. Harvey, born ca. 1818 (Halifax, NC 1850 Census); mar. Mary.

53 Frances Robert Harvey.

52 Thomas Harvey, may have died prior to 1825. In his father's will, probated in Halifax, NC in 1825, the remnant of the estate "to be equally divided into seven parts - .. Thomas Harveys part to be equally divided among his living children", no names mentioned.
