MARY ELIZABETH HERVEY AND HER OFFSPRING
By Elizabeth Ladelle Gillispie & Donald G. Hervey

(Authors' note: The numbering of a person is the person's estimated birth order with a small subscript number for the generation, starting with Col. Thomas Hervey of Halifax, NC; e.g. for Albert Gallatin Hervey (123) the "3" implies Albert is of the third generation after Col. Thomas Hervey and the 12 implies he was the 12th child born to his father.)

Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Hervey (34) was born to Albert Gallatin Hervey (123) and Martha Gardner "Mat" (Joyner) at Chatfield, Navarro County, Texas, on 16 October 1853.1 (For further information on A. G. see HFoA Vol. 4 No. 3, pp 156f; Vol. 1 No. 3, pp 26f; Vol. 5 No. 1, pp 185 & 186; and more.) Mat was born 14 June 1830 in Livingston County, Kentucky, to Cynthia Gardner (Person) and Henry Joyner.

On 2 April 1863 Albert Gallatin wrote to Lizzie from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where he was serving in the Confederate Cavalry during the Civil War: "I will write you a short letter[.] I hope you have learned to write well enough to answer it yourself[.] I often hear from you by your mothers letters, it gives me great pleasure to hear that you are a good girl and that you are learning very fast. if you will learn to play the piano well I will buy you one when the war is over[.]"

Lizzie was married In Chatfield, Texas, on her nineteenth birthday, 16 October 1872, to David Thomas McMullan.1 Tom McMullan was born 6 February 1848 in Murray County, Georgia, to Arny N. (Humphrey) McMullan (daughter of David W. Humphrey) and Randolph McMullan.2 In Georgia he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South of the Georgia Conference. Tom came to Chatfield after the Civil War, when he was 22 years old, from Oglethorp, Macon County, Georgia, to join his cousins.1

Tom and Lizzie lived in Tupelo, Navarro County, Texas. Tom bought 222 acres of land from a homesteader but had to pay for it a second time because the homesteader had failed to file on it. With young children at home that Lizzie tended alone, Tom contracted to build the railroad form Corsicana to Kerens, Texas. He was trampled seriously by a stallion and had to use a cane afterwards. In 1899 the couple built a new house and converted their old double pin log house into a barn. Subsequently, the barn was struck by lightning and burned in 1920.1

Theo S. Daniel, 3rd, considered the home of his (great) "Aunt McMullan" to be his second home "all my growing years," e.g. circa 1920-1935. "Mother, my brother and I would visit for weeks at a time." His mother was Anna May (Hervey) Daniel (25), the daughter of Charles Albert Hervey (44) and granddaughter of Albert Gallatin Hervey (123).9

Tom died 12 June 1918 in Tupelo. Circa 1925 Lizzie's address was the post office in Rice, Texas. Lizzie was blind late in life and died 9 May 1936. Both Tom and Lizzie were buried in the Old Chatfield Cemetery at Chatfield, Texas.

Brooks was born 18 February 1874 in DeSoto County, Mississippi, to Fannie Leemore (Dement) and William Harvey Wheeler. He came to Navarro County, Texas, to work for Tom Hester, a distant cousin. He met Mattie at the Methodist Episcopal Church South of Tupelo. He wanted her to marry him and move back to Mississippi, but she would not leave Texas.1

For the 1910 census of Navarro County, Texas, Brooks Wheeler's neighborhood was enumerated on 15 April 1910. Brooks was listed as: head of household; age 36; married eight years in current marriage; born in Mississippi with his father born in Tennessee and his mother born in Mississippi; working as a farm laborer on his own account; having been out of work 8 weeks in 1909; able to read and write; and renting a farm. The 1910 census (taken on 5 April 1910 in their neighborhood) shows them as having been married 4 years. It lists the occupation of A. D. as a carpenter who builds houses. It indicates that both A. D. and Addie could read and write. It gives Addie's age as 24 years. It gives the age of their daughter Mary as being 1-4/12 years so she was born circa November 1908.8 Theo S. Daniel, 3rd, writes: Lizzie's son "Dave lived N.W. across the woods from her," which was circa 1936. Also in the vicinity were the families of Lizzie's children Clark, Mattie, and Bess.9 Addie died 15 March 1962 in Austin, Texas.2 The daughter of Addie (Lindsay) and Albert David McMullan (45) was:

Mary Bessie "Bess" McMullan (85), daughter of Mary Elizabeth (Hervey) and David Thomas McMullan, appears on the 1910 U.S. census of Navarro County listed as a transient, 22-year-old, single female who could read and write, working as a milliner in Kerens, Texas.8 Bess was actually there to attend a millinery school to learn to make hats from the lady who was renowned throughout Navarro County for the hats she made. She used this trade, working for herself and Hiram G. "Sissy" Brown's millinery on Beaton Street in Corsicana. The ladies of the city and the surrounding area "had" to have a Sissy Brown hat.

Bess was courted for a while by Frank Wheeler. Frank came from Mississippi when his elder brother, Brooks, was laid up for two years with as injured leg and made two crops for him. Frank asked Bess to marry him and gave her an engagement ring but the wedding never took place.

At age 32, after a courtship of 14 years, Bess married on 8 February 1920 at Tupelo, Texas to Marvin C. Burdine. Bess and Marvin had been neighbors and friends most of their lives. Marvin was born 11 March 1887 in Tupelo, Mississippi.2 He was a brother of Golden Burdine who married Herbert E. Hervey. The length of the courtship may have been because the Burdine family thought that the McMullans were just too liberal because both Dave and Maud McMullan had divorced. Another contributing factor may have been that Marvin was a casualty of poison gas when he joined the service and was stationed in France during World War I. This did not stop him from farming for many years afterwards.

After Bess and Marvin married, they lived for a short time in the "Tupelo-gin house" before they moved in with her mother, Lizzie (Hervey) McMullan. Lizzie went blind from glaucoma (there is some family controversy as to whether she was blind in only one or both eyes) and Bess took care of her until her death in May of 1936.1 After Lizzie's death Marvin and Bess continued to live in Lizzie's house and farm the land. Relatives such as Bess's cousin Anna May (Hervey) Daniel and her sons continued to visit in that house.8 Marvin died 26 December 1965 in Tyler, Texas. Bess died on 15 January 1966 in Corsicana, Texas. Bess and Marvin had no children.2

Anna Joyner McMullan (95), daughter of Mary Elizabeth (Hervey) and David Thomas McMullan, married Allyn Charles Douglas on 28 August 1913 at Tupelo, Texas. Allyn Charles Douglas was born on 5 October 1887 in Corsicana, Texas.2 In the early 1920s he lived in Corsicana and was "a drummer for Central Texas Grocery Co." The family moved to Oak Cliff and ran Douglas Grocery and Market in the 1930s and 1940s.9 Anna died on 16 January 1954 in Dallas, Texas.2 Allyn died on 7 November 1964 at Terrell, Texas and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Corsicana. The couple had one son.2,9

16 Allyn Charles Douglas, Jr., was born on 19 October 1919. He attended North Texas Agricultural College and served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1940 through 1945.
