TEXT VERSION

My dear Kin Folks:

In my work of research for information for the Hardin Family Tree, which I started many years ago, I have spent much time and some money, trying to gather information for this book. I have traveled many hundred miles, and written hundreds of letters. Many of them were never answered, a few have been very prompt in responding to me at all times. Due to my poor health I have to close my work on this book. You will find that some names and some dates are missing, I am sorry that such is the case. I have used all that came to me. I wanted a record down to the last Babe.

As I close my work on this book, I am led to believe that John R. Hardin and two brothers came from England about 1745, one located in Virginia, one in South Carolina, and John R. in North Caro¬lina. I find more Hardin families who trace their ancestors to South Carolina than any other State.

I hope someone will take up this work, add to and revise the small volume that I bring to you. Yours for God, Home and Native Land.

The Hardin Family Tree.

I am only a twig on the family tree,
Far out on a bending limb;
My Dad is a bough on the old gnarled trunk
The trunk that's supporting him.

And this is the law of the boughs and
Twigs wherever you may go;
It's only on sound; rugged boughs that
Strong, healthy twigs can grow.

Dear Kin Folks:

Did you know that but for one man, no record would have been made of the many outstanding doings of our an¬cestors and kinsmen? This man, (James Robt (Bob) Hardin) of Birmingham, Ala. has given much time and means to make this possible. Do you know the history of James Hardin 1800 to 1860? Did you know that of his six sons that reached manhood, that Andrew Jackson made an outstanding Missionary Baptist Preacher, that Robert Dixon, was a great Cumberland Presbyterian Preacher, that William Maxwell was a Christian preacher, that John Rolling was a Doctor and frequently filled the Missionary Baptist pulpit, that Lovel C. died a Confederate Soldier in battle at the age of 32 years in defense of his Southland, that James Hilliard was a Literary Teacher, and that their sisters did their 'bit? Did you and do you know the next generation of this people and the next?

I met our kinsman the above, James Robert (Bob) Hardin in 1917 when he came to Scottsboro, Ala. to ,visit his childhood home and old friends, and we have since had several visits together. It was on one of these visits that he spoke of wanting to get out a little history or family tree of his family and requested that I assist him with my side of the family. (My grandfather Counts married Elizabeth J. Hardin, who was my grandmother and sister to the father of Cousin Bob.) In the little information I have furnished it has been a pleasure, and I trust that the kin will see proper to keep up the record.

The foregoing, I have said without asking permission and feel that I should tell you further, that in this man J. R. (Bob) I find those same traits in him that existed in the generation before him. That is, one who loves his people, strong in conviction and ready to defend that that he stands for. Fraternally I know him to be a Mason and above all a high tone Christian gentlemen.

Yours,
J. A. Jones,

HARDIN REUNION

The descendents of John R. Hardin, who settled in North Carolina many years ago, met at the old home place of James Hardin, a son of John R. Hardin, who located on a farm near Elora, Tenn. in 1836, for a family reunion Sept. 1, 1934. Relatives were present from many different states. It was a grand meeting where many relatives met for the first time. Others recalled faces that had been almost forgotten during the many years of separation. There was singing of the old time hymns, speeches and dinner was spread on the ground.

The meeting was continued for a second day and was held on the lawn at Gordon, Hardin's residence in Elora, Tenn. Church services were held in a nearby church by Rev. Andrew Johnson Hardin of Ft. Worth, Texas, after which dinner was spread. Relatives numbering more than 300 came in buses, trucks and every means of conveyance from far and near.

This reunion was brought about through the efforts of James Robert Hardin of 7316 1st. Ave., Birmingham, Ala., who has also been collecting information many years for the Hardin Family Tree, which will be published at an early date. This book will contain records of births, marriages and deaths of practically all descendents of James Hardin. John R. Hardin came to this country from England about 1745.

JOHN R. HARDIN, our ancestor, came to this country at about an age of 16 years with a brother. We do not know from what country they came , nor the date of landing, but suppose it was about 1745. We have no further record of his brother. Later he was married and three sons were born, to-wit: John, Green and Moses. John settled in the early days at or near Elyton, Ala., where he reared a large family and spent the remainder of his days. Some of his family remained near Birmingham, Ala. Green and Moses went further west and have been lost sight of.

In or near Saulsberry, Rowan County, N. C. in 1799 John R. Hardin was married to Mary Ann Nevins, (who was his second wife) and to them were born two sons, James in 1800 and Robert in 1802. John R. died in 1810, leaving his widow and these two sons.

Family tradition has it that Mary Ann Nevins, when a young girl embarked and sailed for America with a widowed mother and other brothers and sisters, that one member to the family, perhaps a sister, sickened and died and was buried at sea. They brought with them a Dutch Bible, which was highly prized in later years.

After the death of John R. his widow married David Foster, and later they all moved to Carter County, Tenn., where they remained eight or nine years and while here James Hardin met and married Dicy Jenkins, and soon afterwards they all moved and settled on Wolf River in Kentucky. After two years James moved his family and settled in Fayetteville, Tenn., to remain five years, and from here again moved and settled on the Mountain Fork of Flint river five miles above New Market, in Madison County, Ala. In 1834 they moved to Franklin County, Tenn., thence in 1836 he with his family moved and settled near the present site of Elora, Lincoln County, Tenn., where he spent the remainder of his days. After the death of David Foster, his widow, Mary Ann, came and lived the remainder of her life with her son, James Hardin and family. She died April 4th, 1847, at the ripe age of 80 years.

To James and Dicy Hardin were born eight sons and three daughters, to-wit:
Andrew Jackson, was born 1820 in Kentucky, died 1899
Joseph and William, twins, born 1821 died 1822
Robert Dixon, born 1823 died 1873
William Maxwell, born 1825 died 1899
John Roland, born 1827 died 1896
Lovel C., born 1830 died 1862
Mary Ann, born 1832 died 1877
Elizabeth J. born 1834 died 1903
James Hilliard, born 1837 died 1915
Eliza, born 1839 died 1878

In 1834 James Hardin was stricken with blindness that lasted him till death. He was a mechanic, farmer and good businessman and a successful trader in both real and personal property. It was said of him that even in his blindness he could tell the color of a horse by feeling it.

He died July 29, 1860. Age 60 years.

Dicy died February 27, 1867. Age 67 years.

The above named Robert, brother of James, remained in Kentucky and married Mary Carter, to whom were born six sons and five daughters. After the death of Robert's first wife he again married and other children were born. We know nothing further of Robert Hardin's family.

Note:
As stated by me in the first of this history, I was requested to give what little information I could, and have. You will note from the above that Andrew J. Hardin and family lived in Scottsboro, Ala., from 1871 to 1881. That was before I was born. I have lived in Scottsboro since 1916, to the present, and in my contact with the older citizens of this place, it is a pleasure to say that I have had many things said to me about this grand old gentleman that goes to show that the lives of good men never die. I never met Uncle Andrew, he was a grand uncle, brother to my grandmother, but did have the pleasure to meet Aunt Adaline a few years before her death and learned to dearly love her.
J. A. Jones

James Robert Hardin, as previously shown, was born in 1862 and in 1886 was married to Mattie F. Douthit in Madison County, Ala. They immediately located in Birmingham, Ala., where they resided until July 1887 when they moved to Limestone County, Ala., to remain only a few months, moving to Decatur, Ala., January 1888 to remain one year, From here they moved to Tuscumbia, Ala. in Dec 1888, where James R. entered the building profession. In Aug 1891 he entered the service of the L. & N. R. R. in the Decatur shops, moving his family there in October of that year. He served in the Coach and Cabinet departments until the latter part of Dec. 1899, from here he went to Marshall, Texas, and entered the service of the Texas and Pacific R. R. On Jan. 1, 1900, as Coach Builder, moving his family there in 1900, he remained in this place and service until March 16, 1908, when 300 men were layed off at the T. & P. R. R. shops, he being one of the 300. In April J.R. returned to his native state, Ala. and located in Birmingham where he entered the building profession, on Nov. 22, 1910, he was employed by Alabama Great Southern R. R. as Coach Carpenter where he remained to the present time, 1932, the Southern Railway has secured control of the A.G. S. R.R. The foregoing brief only deals with the material things of life, and to fail to reveal some of the other things dealing with this man's life would not do him justice, for though diligent as he was and is in careing for his family we find in him the higher and nobler things ever asserting themselves for the eternal welfare of mankind. He affiliated with the Church of his Father, the Missionary Baptist, and ever endeavered to render service becoming a Christian. During his seven years of residence in Marshall, Texas, another church became needful. On Sept. 4, 1904, the Sec¬ond Baptist Church of Marshall, Texas, was organized with 36 members. They held their meetings in the school build¬ing until March, 1905, when they moved into their new completed church, their membership being increased to 45 before a pastor was called on the field. J. R. Hardin took the lead in this work, and was elected Church Clerk, Chair¬man of the Finance Committee and Trustee, and was Super¬intendent of the Sunday School as long as he was there. In this connection, it should be told that his brother, An¬drew Johnson Hardin, was also instrumental in this organization, who later followed in the footsteps of his father, becoming a Minister.

The local Church of which J. R. is a member could ill afford to give him up, as he continues to work for its good and the general promotion of humanity. He is a Fraternalist of the cleanest type. His wife, Mattie F. is the type of woman that goes to make a good man, and no doubt has been a great stay to him. Yours truly, J. A. Jones.

Death of Samuel W. Peete.
Many old friends in North Alabama will regret to hear of the death of Samuel Word Peete, which occured in Cres¬cent City, Fla., on Dec. 22, 1932.

Mr. Peete had been in ill health for some time, but his condition was not thought to be of so serious a nature. He Peete came from one of the pioneer families of Limestone County, Ala. His forefathers having settled in South Limestone nearly one hundred and fifty years ago. He was born, on the old Peete plantation near Harris in 1857 and spent the greater part of his life in Limestone County.

His life was spent in trying to help his fellowmen, always ready to aid in the up building of churches, schools and roads in the community in which he lived. His life was a shining example for all to follow, and many are those who will mourn his going. Funeral services for him were conducted in the First Baptist Church at 10:00 A.M., Dec. 23, 1932. By kind hands he was laid to rest in Crescent City Cemetary.

Another old soldier of the cross has passed away.

Rev. Andrew Jackson Hardin, was born in Kentucky, April 23, 1820. When two years of age his father moved to Fayetteville, Lincoln County, Tenn., and there he was reared. While a young man he came to New Market, Ala. where he united with the Baptist Church and was baptised by the venerable Geo. W. Carmichael, June 8, 1856.

He was ordained to the full work of the ministry at Mt. Zion Church, Madison County Jan. 1866, the presbytery consisting of Elders Joel Wheeler and Eugene Strode. Bro¬ther Hardin was informed in the scripture, the distinctive The Hardin Family Tree doctrines and principles of Baptism, and well informed on the Baptist Church policy, and also the tenets and policy of churches of other denominations. He served a number of churches in North Alabama quite acceptably, and did great good in building up the cause and in winning souls to Christ. Unlike many of our older Ministers of his day in North Alabama, he was missionary to the core. He was also strongly opposed to saloons and all forms of the whis¬key curse. Bro. Hardin was also faithful and efficient as a Sunday School worker. He leaves many friends who will remember him with pleasure, because his life was pure and upright and his influence was good and abiding. His conse¬crated Christian wife, who has been by his side for forty years, sharing in all his experiences of these eventful years, still lingers on the shores of time, and is greatly bereaved at her great loss.

Six devoted children also are left behind in deep sorrow because of the loss of a fond and devoted father. He passed away quietly at the residence of his son, J. R. Hardin in Decatur, Ala., Feb. 5, 1899 at the age of 79.

His mortal remains were carried to Madison and placed in the Baptist Church, and after appropriate funeral ser¬vices by Rev. N. D. Crutcher, were by kind hands, laid to rest in the Madison Cemetery.

God bless and comfort the dear bereaved ones.

Mary Adaline Hardin died at Town Creek, Ala., May 30, 1910. Mrs. M. A. Hardin was born July 27, 1838. As the sun had commenced his daily journey the soul of our dear friend went home to the Father who had given her so many years of usefulness here on earth. She united with the Baptist Church early in life and was ever a loyal mem¬ber and did all possible for the Master's cause. She was married to Rev. A. J. Hardin, who preceeded her home some eleven years ago. About a year ago she became confined to her room and later entirely to her bed. At times her suffering was intense. She never doubted the wisdom and goodness of her heavenly father, but bore her suffering with Christian forbearance, never impatient, and as we who saw the end draw near, we could but thank God for such a beautiful example in this lovely Christian woman's life.

Her last days were spent with her daughter, Mrs. C. N. Sanderson, who did all that a loving daughter could do to alleviate her suffering. She had the assistance of another daughter, a son, and many friends were glad to do anything possible that tender, loving hands could do. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Francis of Town Creek, and Rev. N. C. Crutcher of Madison, and she was laid to rest beside her husband at Madison, Ala., by many friends and relatives. She has left a blessed heritage to this earth inasmuch as she raised a family of men and women who are trying to live as near the cross as she did.

To the bereaved ones we extend our heartfelt sympathy and commend them to the Father who doeth all things well.

A FRIEND.

OBITUARY OF IDA HARDIN

Another home filled with grief, and many a heart sorrow stricken on account of the death of such an amiable; young lady as was the one of whom we are called upon to render this tribute of respect.

Miss Ida Hardin was the daughter of a Missionary Baptist Preacher. She was born May 3, 1864; professed faith in Christ at the age of fifteen, and joined the Missionary, Baptist Church at Scottsboro, Ala. Her father afterwards moved near Madison Station, Ala., where she died on July 28, 1886, aged 22 years, 2 months and 26 days.

At the time of her death, she was a member of the Baptist Church of Madison, Ala., in which she lived a consistent and humble member to the day of her death. Oh, how she will be missed, both in the church and in the com¬munity. She was the idol of her many, many friends. She was an active, energetic worker in the Sabbath School and in the temperance cause. Her zeal for the interest of Church and Pastor was truly great. She, like Moses' sis¬ter, would hold up the hands of her Pastor with part of her money earned by teaching.

How sad it is for our young people to be taken from us, while they are just entering manhood and womanhood. It would be preferable with us, to give them up to the rude monster death, either in childhood or old age, but the will of the Lord be accomplished. The Savior said. - "Father I will that they be with me where I am" We here tender our deepest sympathies for the many relatives and friends who mourn their loss — our loss is Heaven's gain.

"Dear sister, thou hast left us,
Here thy loss we deeply feel.
But 'tis God that path bereft us,
He can all our sorrow's heal."

Dear Kin:
it was in April of 1917, that I visited relatives and friends in Scottsboro, Ala., after having been away for many years. Here I had the pleasure of meeting, for the first time,. my Cousin John A. Jones, who was Chief Clerk in the office of Probate judge. Since then I have been visiting Scottsboro twice a year up to 1932. John always greeted me with a warm welcome. I found him to be a Mason, a Christian gentleman of the highest type, and .a member of the Presbyterian Church, Supt. of the Sunday School and an active worker in both Church and Sunday School. He was always found on the moral side of every issue.
John had many friends in Jackson County, and in the State as well. He seemed to have a bright future. When his health began to fail we hoped he would soon rally and be his self again. Little did we think that the end was so near. John Andrew Jones died Feb. 12, 1931 at his home in Scottsboro, Ala. Our Heavenly Father in his wisdom sent his messenger to call home, our loving friend, relative and coworker. While we feel deeply grieved at our loss, saddened with the family because of his absence and realize the radiant life must now remain only in our memory. His going in the prime of life saddens our hearts, but we will¬ingly bow in humble submission to the Devine Will of our Master, when we think of the living example of his devo¬tion to his Master, his Church and his home, the influence of his life upon those who came in contact with his personality and his love.
Yours truly,
J. R. Hardin,

NOTE

Doubtless the readers of this history will find many mistakes, in both names and dates, but in compiling such an enormous amount of data as is contained in this small booklet, it is almost an impossibility to get every detail correct.

It has taken a lot of time, effort and persaverance on the part of Mr. J. R. Hardin to secure this data, and I only hope that you people, who read this, will give him the credit which he is due.

It has been a pleasure to turn out this work, and I sincerely hope that it will be read with appreciation by everyone who has the opportunity of securing a copy.
