The Church of St Alphonsus Great Mersey Street Liverpool L5 The first Roman Catholic Church of St Alphonsus stood on Kirkdale Road at the bottom of Everton Valley. This was originally a Masonic hall, and opened as a temporary church in 1878; at about the same time that schools were opened on Great Mersey Street. (The premises on Kirkdale Road was still a church in 1908, but by the time of the Great War had become St Alphonsus' Boys Club, which it remained until at least the 1930s. No traces of the buildings on this side of Kirkdale Road remain and the area is now landscaped.) In December 1911 the present church was opened next to the schools on Great Mersey Street. It is a large and somewhat raw Classical building of brick, with concrete dressings which resemble limestone.
