St Austin's Roman Catholic Church 561 Aigburth Road Grassendale Garston Liverpool L19 0NU Aigburth is a very old centre of Catholicism, the Church having land and a chapel at Stanlawe Grange and Aigburth Hall until the Reformation, but in the 1830s provision for local Catholics in this predominantly rural district was very poor. The land for the new church was given by Peter Challoner, a shipbuilder and member of an old Catholic family, and the Church of St Austin was built in 1838. There is no record of an architect, but the Liverpool Mercury of July 1838 described the church as 'a neat and commodious building in the plain Gothic style'. The church presents a bold face, with its large rose window and octagonal pinnacles, to Aigburth Road; it is surrounded by mature trees and a cemetery, containing, among others, many members of the Challoner family.
