This Large Roman Catholic church stands near to where St Patrick's
Cross was erected to mark St Patrick's Hill, supposedly the site where
St Patrick preached on his way to Ireland. The Parish was established
in 1849, and the first church, designed by Edward Pugin, opening in
1860. The church was badly damaged during the Second World War,
and reopened after rebuilding in 1854. It is a Decorated Gothic
building made of red sandstone. At the time of writing, the church
was earmarked for closure in the restructuring of inner city parishes.
