Hall Lane
Liverpool
L7 8TG
This sandstone building, blackened by decades of soot, stands on the
corner of Hall Lane and Kensington. It was opened in 1886 after the
local Catholics had worshipped for ten years in the chapel of the
convent which stood on Mount Vernon Street, now swallowed up by
the Royal Liverpool Hospital. Sacred Heart was designed by the
architectural firm of Goldie, Child & Goldie, although two other firms
who did much work for the Catholic Church were later involved;
Pugin & Pugin did some alterations in the 1890s and Sinnott, Powell
& Sinnott designed a 'substantial and elegant' church hall in 1894.
Sacred Heart is a large church of rough yellow sandstone blocks, with
red sandstone dressings, in the Decorated style of Gothic. The most
interesting view of the church is from Mount Vernon Street, now a
private street running through the hospital grounds. From street level
a walkway steps up to a small Gothic porch beneath a huge window
and a slim lantern tower breaks the symmetry; it is a pity that this
entrance is now closed and very overgrown. Fronting Hall Lane the
church has a small Calvary, a depiction in stone of the Crucifixion,
more usually seen outside churches in Brittany.
