Research Notes: Thomas Barnes, father of Sarah Barnes, wife of John Scovell, was an early settler at Hartford, and one of the soldiers of the Pequot War in 1637. He was married to Mary, who was tried on an accusation of witchcraft and on Feb6, 1662-3 was convicted. There can hardly be any doubt that she was executed. Thomas married second in 1663 or 1664 to Mary Andrews, daughter of John Andrews. His children were Sarah, Benjamin and Joseph by his first marriage; Thomas and Ebenezer by the second. In the name of God Amen I Amasa Barnes of the Town of Trenton County of Oneida and State of New York being of sound mind and memory do make and publish this my last will and testament. First I give & bequeath unto my beloved wife Mary F. the use and improvement and income of my dwelling house and lands and their appurtenances and household furniture etc situate in the village of Holland Patent town and County aforesaid. In 1795 three more families came into the town; these were John BONNER, Barnabas MITCHELL and Amos BULL. Mr. BONNER was an Englishman, but came in from Vermont and settled on the lot afterwards owned by Jenkin JONES; later he moved west.

The post office at Empeyville is named East Florence, and was originally located at the corners near the Thomson farm; Charles B. Thomson was probably the first post master. The office was removed to the little village in April, 1863. The business interests of this hamlet are small. The saw mill which has existed many years is run by James Keating, and A.C. Dawley and James Bonner are merchants

there are Emma p 87; Ezra, Harriet, Alice, L., M., p 46; Roselle, Harriet, p
60; and William, Sarah, p 30. I seem to remember William BARNES on an 1850
or 60 Boonville census perhaps with children in the home.

Have you any information about a Riley BARNES? age 55 in 1865, w Anna, child
Melissa M. BARNES - Deerfield (near South Trenton) in 1850s & 60s. He was a
farmer.

General Notes: A. Merrill (great great grandson of Phebe Ann Barnes Bonner Pope and Josiah Pope) sends along some of the following information:

- U. S. 1860 census for Amherst, Lorain County, Ohio shows three additional children [besides Cary Joseph POPE and Phila D. POPE] living with Josiah and Phoebe. Olive Bonner aged 14, Orlando aged 13, and Mary aged 8. Given the difference in ages for Josiah Pope and Phoebe (10 years) and these three children this would seem to confirm a previous marriage for Phoebe, says Arthur Merrill.

In the 1880 census for New Milford, Winnebago County, Illinois, page 85d, Josiah Pope's family lists "Phoebe J." as his wife, born in "NY", with her parents both born in "CT."

Phebe married Luther BONNER, before 1839 in (Likely) Trenton, NY. Luther was born on 9 Jun 1819, died on 18 Feb 1855 in Brownhelm, Loraine Co., OH, at age 35, and was buried in North Ridge Cemetery, Brownhelm, Loraine Co., OH.

Marriage Notes: Phebe and Luther BONNER were married sometime before 1839, the year her youngest child, Frederick, was born. I assume Frederick was the youngest; he is the youngest buried and dated with her husband Luther in Ohio; she had a daughter Sylvia H. who's grave bears no dates; there is also the unknown William BONNER referred to by Ruth Ann BARNES in her list of relatives; possibly another child of Phebe and Luther. In 1838, however, Phebe Ann Barnes was aged 14 or just 15; Luther was 19. Phebe's birth year is calculated from the age she gives in censuses later in her life. A letter from Phebe's grandson, Walter Lyndon POPE states that Phebe came into her second marriage to Josiah POPE "a widow with five children". It is becoming clear that she actually bore six, and possibly seven, if William BONNER is another child of hers; three died before her marriage to Josiah, that we know of, Sylvia, Frederick and Sylvester; An 1860 census in Ohio lists Phebe and Josiah living with three other childrend not of their marriage, according to their ages, Olive Bonner, Orlando and Mary E., making no mention of William. William could have have been on his own by the 1860 census, but might have come into the marriage with the others in 1856.

Phebe BONNER is "in attendance" at a Female Benevolent Society Meeging of the First Baptist Church of Trenton, NY on 14 June 1848. Lois Morrill was kind enough to copy the page from the minute book of that Society and forward to me the references to Phebe. She is listed as "Mrs. Phebe Bonner to spinning 43 know of linnen" As well, for April, 1849, she is listed as one of the "Directors": Mrs. Phebe Bonner". That year Mrs. Mary Barnes was President. At the time of death of Phebe's father, Amasa, his will refers to his wife, "Mary F." who is likely a second wife, as his first and the mother of his children was Ruth White. Mrs. Mary Barnes may well be Phebe's step mother

1. Census: 1860, Amherst, Lorain Co., OH. U. S. 1860 census for Amherst, Lorain County, Ohio shows three additional children living with Josiah and Phoebe. Olive Bonner aged 14, Orlando aged 13, and Mary aged 8. Given the difference in ages for Josiah and Phoebe (10 years) and these three children this would seem to confirm a previous marriage for Phoebe.

2. Residence: 1869-1880, New Milford, Winnebago Co., IL. Josiah and Phebe were likely living in IL at this time, perhaps earlier and longer, as Orlando, having presumably come with them, married, on 3 Mar 1869 in New Milford, Winnebago Co., Illinois and there had his daughter, Gertrude Anna BONNER b: 3 Sep 1873 in New Milford, Winnebago Co., Illinois

First Baptist Church.
The Second Baptist church (the name has since been changed to First Baptist church) was organized May 4, 1864. The original nineteen members were as follows: I. S. Kalloch, Caroline P. Kalloch, I. M. Kalloch, Chas. T. Evans, Esther A. Evans, F. C. Sears, G. W. Beeman, J. M. Lackey, C. C. Hutchinson, Martha Hutchinson, Simon A. Kesting, Catharine P. Kesting, A. H. Dow, Fanny Dow, Nancy S. Filson, D. Brinkerhoff, Isaiah Supernau and wife and Pauline Supernaw.
The different pastors in the order in which they served were Revs. I. S. Kalloch, Isaac Sawyer, Frederic Greaves, Allen Riddell, D. D., A. B. White, Arthur C. Peck, I. N. Clark, Dr. Anderson, J. P. Stephenson, O. W. Van Osdel, W. R. Wood. Rev. C. J. Pope is the present pastor. Membership, 613 with a Sunday school of 650 members. Their elegant building, corner Fourth and Hickory streets, dedicated in April last, is perhaps the finest in the state. It has a seating capacity of 1500.

The First Baptist church of Grand Island was organized in 1870 by Rev. J.N. Webb, state missionary for Nebraska, under the American Baptist Home Missionary Society, with five members. The fold was increased to forty in 1876. The first pastor was Rev. J.J.J. Place. The church was reorganized by the second pastor, Rev. A.D. Trumbull, in 1875.
The congregation for many years used the church building (now on East Eighth street, and which is now used by the Seventh Day Adventists), but on October 12, 1888, the handsome and commodious structure at the northeast corner of Seventh and Sycamore was dedicated. This edifice was built in the form of a Greek cross, showing four gables, a tower of 103 feet in height and a minaret 71 feet. The main audience room, an amphitheater 54 x 43 feet may be connected with the Sunday school rooms. The building is 54 x 72 feet and claims a seating capacity of 750. The building was erected during the pastorate of Rev. L.W. Terry and cost $12,000. To Dr. Jorden, of whose work more is said in this section, is due the credit of lifting a large portion of the indebtedness against the building during the pastorate of Rev. C.J. Pope. In 1907 an eight room parsonage was purchased at a cost of $3,000. This was done during the pastorate of Rev. O.B. Sarber, whose efficiency also secured the building of West End chapel. Rev. W. I. Fowle was pastor from 1911 to 1915, doing excellent work. Rev. E.H. Jackson, the present pastor, came on January 1, 1916. Rev. E.F. Jorden served the church longer than any other minister, his term extending from 1892 to 1902. This was a time of solid growth and prosperity.
This church has been favored with pastors of high character and able preachers. Being located in the city which is the seat of the college of the denomination, this church holds a position among the Baptist churches of the state of special importance and responsibility.

Mildred's SSIndex listing states her birth place as Osage WI, however, during the years of her birth, her father was pastor in Osage, IA. I remember her telling me she was "born in Missouri but I grew up in Nebraska". Curious, and data yet unfound.

Carey Joseph Pope married Margaret Lydia Lyndon 2 Sept. 1884. His father Josiah was born about 1830 in Clipston, Northamptonshire, England. Carey died in 1932 and Margaret died in 1952 at the age of 91. He was a prominent Baptist minister and had a biography in "Who Was Who," back in the fifties.

I remember Grandma Pope from a trip we made to Kansas in 1952 just before she died. I was seven so most of what I remember are impressions rather than facts. But my mother got all the family history information she could at the time.
