Five Hill's are listed in the first U.S. census (1790) in St. Mary's Co., Md. - William (married, 4 sons, 1
daughter), Ignatius (married, 3 sons, 6 daughters), Thomas (married, 3 sons, 1 daughter), Richard
(married, 2 sons, 3 daughters), Henry (married, 1 son), and George (married, 1 son, 3 daughters). One of
them was the father of George D. (born c.1805), from whom our line is traced. George was a farmer and
his wife Catherine was a spinner.

Lord Fairfax, who had granted to the Ball family (relatives of Marion's) a considerable estate located
to the north of George Washington's Mount Vernon (George's mother was Mary Ball), west of George's
adopted Grandson's, (George Washington Parke Custis) Arlington House (which Robert E. Lee's wife,
Mary Custis [G.W.P.Custis' daughter] inherited), and is now Arlington Cemetery, and east of Fairfax's
vast holdings (which now comprise the county of the same name). The estate in time passed through
the several families by inheritance - Ball, Donaldson, Sherwood, and Hill - each disposing of some of
the land along the way, until Marion sold the last parcel of several acres (directly across the street to
the south of Washington-Lee High School) in 1962 when she moved.
