In the Fall of 1839 he removed his family to Wethersfield, Henry county, Ill., where he died in 1844, aged about fifty-nine. His grandfather, J. H. Wells, was a Unitarian minister of Brattleboro, Vt., who emigrated from England in company with Dr. Priestly, the author and chemist. Julia (Tracey) Wells was the daughter of Dr. Ebenezer Tracey. Her mother was the daughter of Gen. Artemas Ward. After the death of her husband, owing to the educational facilities of Galesburg, Ill., Mrs. Wells removed thither with her family, consisting of four sons and one daughter. At the age of seventeen Henry went to Peoria, Ill., and entered the employ, in a general merchandise establishment, of Pettengill & Babcock. In 1851 he entered the National Law School (then at Balston, but afterwards removed to Poughkeepsie, N. Y.), where he graduated in 1853 ; after which he was admitted to the New York bar. He then returned to Peoria and read in the law office of Messrs. Johnson & Blakesley, teaching school in Winter seasons till 1855, when he removed to Cambridge, Henry county, Ill., entered upon the practice of law, and very soon did an extensive business. In 1862 he enlisted in the 112th Illinois Infantry as a private. On the regular organization of the regiment he was made adjutant. In 1863 he was promoted to the rank of major, and made chief of artillery of the 23d Army Corps, and had command of a portion of the line of defense at the siege of Knoxville. He was also chief of artillery on the staff of General J. D. Cox, in the Atlanta campaign. His military career ceased with the close of the war. In June of 1865 he returned to Peoria and opened a law office. Since then Wells is now candidate for attorney general of the State. He votes with the Republican party. In 1869 and 1870 he was a member of the Constitutional Convention.Delegate to Illinois state constitutional convention 36th District, 1869-70. He was married September 8, 1859, to Mary (Demaris), daughter of A. H. Showers, of Cambridge, Ill.

Justice of the Colorado Territory Supreme Court, 1871-1875.Ebenezer Tracy Wells did not return to Rock Island. In October 1865, E. T. took his family west, settling in Colorado Territory. For the term 1866-67, E. T. was elected to the Territorial Legislative Assembly. He was responsible for writing a revision of the Territorial Statutes, know as the ''Revised Statutes of 1868.'' From 1871 to 1875, he held the post of associate justice on Territorial Supreme Court. When statehood arrived, Judge Wells was a member of the Colorado Constitutional Convention of 1876. That same year, he was elected an associated justice on the Supreme Court of Colorado, a position he resigned in 1877. That year he moved to Denver where he practiced law for over thirty years. A long time Republican, Judge E. T. Wells was on the reception committee to welcome former President U. S. Grant to Denver in August 1880. In the spring of 1897, Judge Wells was unsuccessful Silver Republican candidate for mayor of Denver. From 1898 on, he affiliated himself with the Democratic Party. In 1909, he was appointed the Reporter of the Supreme Court of Colorado and held that position until 1920. Injured after being knocked down by revolving door, E. T. took pneumonia and died on April 20, 1923. He was age 88. The Rocky Mountain News headline read ''Ebenezer T. Wells, One of State's Best Known Pioneers And Former Supreme Court Justice, Dies After Short Illness.''
