SYLVIA 5 WELLS (Randall4, Edward3, Thomas2-1)
b. ca 1767 [calc. g.s.;
mar. ca 1789 her first cousin Joseph 5 Wells, b. 2 Sept. 1764 to Thomas and Sarah (Clarke) Wells. The marriage is unrecorded, but proof can be found in her father's Will: "to my beloved daughter Sylvia Wells wife of Joseph...." [Hopkinton Probate Records, 5:168].
After their marriage, Sylvia and her husband moved to the Ohio territory. She was a hardy woman who twice returned to Rhode Island on horseback to visit her family, once carrying back to Ohio a mirror, the gift of her parents [Denison, p. 148]. When her father died in 1821, his Will stated, "...my Will is in case my daughter Sylvia Wells should become in a destitute situation by being left a widow or otherwise and should choose to come into these parts to live again in such case my will is that my son Thomas V. Wells pay to her fifty dollars...." [Hopkinton Probate Records, 5:168, #931571].
When her husband Joseph d. in 1 825, Sylvia, after receiving her dower share, purchased from the estate sale a bedstead, chest, six chairs, a cabinet, animals, tools, and the "loom, swifts, and quill wheel" Wash. Co. Probate, 3:395~396.
Sylvia was still in Adams Twp., Washington Co., OH, at the time of the U.S. census of 1840, aged 60-69. She moved with her Sons to western Ohio in the early 1840s.

JOSEPH5 WELLS (Thomas4, Edward3, Thomas2-',), b. 2 Sept. 1764 at Hopkinton [RI VR. 5:52; Hopkinton Vital Records, 1:63]; mar. ca 1789 Sylvia Wells, b, ca 1770, his first cousin, dau. of his uncle, Randall4, and Lois (Maxson) Wells.
In 1787 Congress decided to open the territory "northwest the Ohio River" to settlers. The Ohio Company was set up to oversee the establishment of the new area, and Gen. Rufus Putnam, Col. Ebenezer Sproat, Col, James Varnum, and Major Haffield White were among the officers and share-holders of the company. Col. Varnum was appointed one of the judges for the territory. During the winter of 1787-88, forty-eight men in two companies under Col. Sproat and Major White, all under the general direction of Gen. Putnam, met at Sumrill's Ferry on the Monongahela River near what is now Pittsburgh. Here they built boats, and in the spring of 1788 went down the Ohio River. They landed near the mouth of the Muskingum River on 7 April 1788. Among these original forty-eight men was Joseph5 Wells [The Founders of Ohio, (1888), p. 8; Denison, p. 148]. He was employed by the Ohio Company to do preliminary work as a carpenter in establishing the settlement. The records indicate that he returned to Rhode Island briefly in 1789, as Sarah Wells, Joseph Wells, and David Wells appeared before the Hopkinton Probate Council on 6 July 1789 to give depositions as to their witnessing the Will of Amos Maxson, "which Witnesses are all expected to remove soon into a distant Land" [Hopkinton Town Council/Probate Council Records, 2:305] The old letter from Isaac Maxson quoted in full on page 230 included the following: "The Wells family who came to Marietta with that company consisted of five brothers Joseph, David, Varnum, Thomas, & Clark -- and five sisters, whose husbands were Jacob Proctor, Pele(tiah) White, Peleg Springer, T(homas) Corey, & Richard Max(on)." Joseph and David were administrators for the estate of their father when he died the first winter in the Ohio Territory.
The Ohio Company gave Donation Tract lands in 100 acre parcels to males, 18 and over, who promised to carry a gun and protect the approaches to the settlement at Marietta against the Indians. These allotments were made from 1790-1820, the period of greatest danger. There were 28 named Donation Tracts [Mayburt Stephenson Reigel, Early Ohioans Residences from Land Grant Records, (1976), hereafter "Reigel," pp. 58-62]. Joseph received a parcel in Donation Tract #20, .Wiseman's Bottom, described as 100 acres in Sect. 4, Twp. 3, Range 9 (Adams Twp.) [Washington Co. Deeds, 4:182].
"The first farm below the mouth of Cats Creek was improved by Esquire Joseph Wells; David Wells lived near the mouth of the Creek. They were the sons of Major Wells, and lived in the Stockade during the Indian Wars...Joseph had a small horse mill there on the Muskingum River. The first summer school was held in a cabin on his farm" [Williams, pp. 559, 562].
Joseph and his family lived in Adams Twp., Washington Co., until his death [U.S. Censuses 1800, 1810 and 1820].
Joseph d. 6 May 1825, aged 6ly [g.s.. He was bur. at Greenlawn Cemetery, Lowell, OH [Helen Sloan, Washington County Ohio Cemetery Records and Death Notices, hereafter "Sloan"]. On 9 June, the court ordered an inventory of his estate. It included one share in the Muskingum Library, and property set off to the widow [Wash. Co. Prob. Recs., 3:366- 368]. An estate sale was held 16 Sept. 1825 [Wash. Co. Prob. Recs., 3:395-396]. After 1840 Sylvia moved with Sons Randall and Harris to Auglaize Co. in western Ohio. She d.
