  • Note: 4 April 1836; Hartford, Hartford Co., Connecticut, USAG; After he completed his dental training in Boston, Wells opened his own office in Hartford, Connecticut on April 4, 1836.[3] Between 1841 and 1845, Wells became a reputable dentist in Hartford, where he had many patients and attracted apprentices. Among his patients were respected members of society such as William Ellsworth, the governor of Connecticut. His three apprentices were John Riggs, C. A. Kingsbury, and William Morton. In 1843, Wells and Morton started a practice in Boston and Wells continued to instruct Morton.[3] John Riggs later became a partner and Kingsbury became one of the founders of Philadelphia Dental College.

Wells first witnessed the effects of nitrous oxide on December 10, 1844, when he and his wife Elizabeth attended a demonstration by Gardner Quincy Colton billed in the Hartford Courant as “A Grand Exhibition of the Effects Produced by Inhaling Nitrous Oxide, Exhilarating, or Laughing Gas."[4] The demonstration took place at Union Hall, Hartford. During the demonstration, a local apothecary shop clerk Samuel A. Cooley became intoxicated by nitrous oxide. While under the influence, Cooley did not react when he struck his legs against a wooden bench while jumping around.[5] After the demonstration, Cooley was unable to recall his actions while under the influence, but found abrasions and bruises on his knees. From this demonstration, Wells realized the potential for the analgesic properties of nitrous oxide, and met with Colton about conducting trials.[4]

The following day, Wells conducted a trial on himself by inhaling nitrous oxide and having John Riggs extract a tooth.[5] Upon a successful trial where he did not feel any pain, Wells went on to use nitrous oxide on at least 12 other patients in his office.[4] In 1844, Hartford did not have a hospital, so Wells sought to demonstrate his new findings in either Boston or New York. He chose to go to Boston in January 1845 where he previously studied dentistry, and also knew William Morton, a former student and associate.[5] Wells and Morton's practice was dissolved in October 1844, but they remained on friendly terms. Morton was enrolled in Harvard Medical School at the time and agreed to help Wells introduce his ideas, although Morton was skeptical about the use of nitrous oxide.[5]

He gave a demonstration to medical students at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on January 20, 1845. However, the gas was improperly administered and the patient cried out in pain. The patient later admitted that although he cried out in pain, he remembered no pain and did not know when the tooth was extracted.[1] The audience of students in the surgical theatre jeered "humbug". After the embarrassment from his failed demonstration, Wells immediately returned home to Hartford the next day. Shortly after, he became ill and his dental practice became sporadic.

On February 5, 1845, Wells advertised his home for rent.[5] On April 7, 1845, Wells advertised in the Hartford Courant that he was going to dissolve his dental practice, and referred all his patients to Riggs, the man who had extracted his tooth.

In October 1846, Morton gave a successful demonstration of ether anesthesia in Boston. Following Morton's demonstration, Wells published a letter accounting his successful trials in 1844 in an attempt to claim the discovery of anesthesia. His efforts in establishing his claim were mostly unsuccessful.[4]

Despite his advertisement for dissolving his practice in April 1845, Wells sporadically continued his practice, with his last daybook entry being on November 5, 1845.[1]
  • Note*: 1838; Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, USAG; Wells was the first of three children of Horace and Betsy Heath Wells, born on January 21, 1815 in Hartford, Vermont.[1] His parents were well-educated and affluent land owners, which allowed him to attend private schools in New Hampshire and Amherst, Massachusetts.[2] At the age of 19 in 1834, Wells began studying dentistry under a 2-year apprenticeship in Boston.[2] The first dental school did not open until 1840 in Baltimore.

At age 23, Wells published a booklet "An Essay on Teeth" in which he advocated for his ideas in preventive dentistry, particularly for the use of a toothbrush. In his booklet, he also described tooth development and oral diseases, where he mentioned diet, infection, and oral hygiene as important factors.[2]

After obtaining a degree, Wells set up a practice in Hartford, Connecticut, with an associate named William T. G. Morton, who would become famous for his use of ether as an anesthetic on October 16, 1846.
  • Note: 1844; Hartford, Windsor Co., Vermont, USAG; Hartford dentist whose experiments with nitrous oxide led him to be considered the father of anesthesia. Some scholars also speculate that Wells was the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde."

Dr. Wells attended a laughing gas demonstration on December 10, 1844 where he observed the properties of nitrous oxide gas and recognized its potential. Gardner Quincy Colton (1814-1898, FAG Memorial# 133151162) a showman and former medical student who later turned dentist had directed the laughing gas demonstration.

The very next day (December 11, 1844) Dr. Wells had Colton come to his office where he had a tooth painlessly removed by his colleague, Dr. John Mankey Riggs (1811-1885, FAG Memorial# 133048556), using nitrous oxide gas. This discovery arguably represents dentistry's greatest gift to medicine and to humanity.

The Baltimore College of Dental Surgery conveyed an honorary Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree on Dr. Riggs in 1879. Dr. Wells was posthumously awarded a DDS degree during the sesquicentennial of the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 1990.
  • Note: 20 January 1845; Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, USAG; After definitively ending his dental practice in late 1845, Wells became a salesman of shower baths which he received a patent for on November 4, 1846.[1] Wells also planned to sail to Paris to purchase paintings to resell in the United States. He traveled to Paris in early 1847, where he petitioned the Academie Royale de Medicine and the Parisian Medical Society for recognition in the discovery of anesthesia.[4]
  • Note: January 1848; New York City, Kings Co., New York, USAG; Upon returning to the United States, Wells moved to New York City in pursuit of his own interests in January 1848, leaving his wife and young son behind in Hartford.[6] While in New York City, Wells lived alone at 120 Chambers St in Lower Manhattan. He began self-experimenting with ether and chloroform, in which he became addicted to the latter.[6] At that time the effects of sniffing chloroform and ether were not known.[7]
  • Note: 21 January 1848; New York City, New York Co., New York, USAG; On his 33rd birthday, January 21, 1848, Wells rushed out into the street and threw sulfuric acid over the clothing of two prostitutes. He was committed to New York's infamous Tombs Prison. As the influence of the drug waned, Wells' mind started to clear. In despair, he realised the horror of what he had done. Wells requested the guards to escort him to his house to pick up his shaving kit.[8] On January 24, 1848, Wells then committed suicide in his cell, slitting his left femoral artery with a razor after inhaling an analgesic dose of chloroform to blot out the pain.[9]

Wells is buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford, Connecticut.
  • Note: February 1848; Paris, Paris, Ile-de-France, FranceG; Twelve days before his death, the Parisian Medical Society had voted and honored him as the first to discover and perform surgical operations without pain. In addition, he was elected an honorary member and awarded an honorary MD degree. However, Wells died unaware of these decisions.[2] Wells first voiced his concern for minimizing his patient's pain during dental procedures in 1841. He was known for caring about his patient's comfort.[1] During his time as a dentist, Wells advocated for regular check ups for dental hygiene, and also began the practice of pediatric dentistry in order to start dental care early.

The American Dental Association honored Wells posthumously in 1864 as the discoverer of modern anesthesia, and the American Medical Association recognized his achievement in 1870.[10]

A monument to Horace Wells was raised in the Place des États-Unis, Paris.

Hartford, Connecticut, has a statue of Horace Wells in Bushnell Park.
  • Note: 1904; Biographies of Notable Americans, 1904

WELLS, Horace, dentist, was born in Hartford, Vt., Jan. 21, 1815. He prepared for the dental profession in Boston, Mass., 1834-36; practised in Hartford, Vt., 1836-41, and 1843-46; was in Boston in partnership with Dr. W. T. G. Morton, 1841-43; and after 1847 practised in New, York city. In 1840 Dr. Wells became convinced of the anaesthetic quality of nitrous oxide gas for preventing pain in dental operations. This idea he put into practice, being himself the subject of his first experiment, and in January, 1845, [p.356] made an unsuccessful demonstration before Dr. Warren's medical class at Harvard college, owing to the insufficiency of gas administered to the patient. In 1846 Dr. W. T. G. Morton (q.v.), his former partner, proved that sulphuric ether could be used in the same manner as gas, and obtained a patent for his discovery. Dr. C. T. Jackson (q.v.) also made a similar claim for chloroform dissolved in alcohol, and Dr. Crawford W. Long of Georgia (q.v.) had used sulphuric ether in surgical practice so early as 1842. Thus the honor of having made the original discovery of anæsthesia had four distinguished claimants. Dr. Wells and Dr. Morton applied to the Institute of France, the former in person, receiving the honor of an M.D. degree. While in Europe he supported himself by the selling of pictures, and by lecturing on birds, having been always interested in ornithology. The humiliation of his failure to obtain recognition of his discovery and the excessive use of ether to which he became addicted upon his return to New York city, resulted in mental aberration and the taking of his own life. He invented and patented most of his own instruments, also a new solder for fastening false teeth to the plate. He is the author of the pamphlet: A History of the Application of Nitrous-Oxide Gas, Ether and other Vapors to Surgical Operations (1847). A bronze bust of Dr. Wells by Truman H. Bartlett was placed by the dentists of America in Bushnell park, Hartford, Vt., and in 1853 his cause Was defended in the U.S. senate by Truman Smith, and published as: "An Examination of the Question of Anæsthesia" (1859). See also Smith's "An Inquiry into the Origin of Modern Anæsthesia" (1867). The fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of anæsthesia by Dr. Wells was celebrated by the American Dental association in Philadelphia, Pa., Dec. 11, 1894. See: "The Discovery of Anæsthesia by Dr. Horace Wells" (1900). Dr. Wells died in New York city, Jan. 24, 1848.

James Madison Wells, the 3rd military Governor of Louisiana of Union held territories during the Civil War, is the second from the left in this bronze sculpture of five governors. He remained the military governor of all of Louisiana at the end of the Civil War.
  • Occupation*: between 3 March 1865 and 3 June 1867; Governor of State of Louisiana

Wells entered public service in 1840, with an appointment as sheriff of Rapides Parish. He also served as the Louisiana lieutenant governor from 1864 to 1865. On March 3, 1865, Governor Michael Hahn resigned from office, and Wells, who was lieutenant governor at the time, assumed the duties of the governorship of parishes in Louisiana that were controlled by federal troops. Wells won election to his own term, in a special election that was held on November 7, 1865. During his tenure, the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment was provisionally approved. Also, black suffrage was advocated for, which caused political unrest and triggered calls for the impeachment of Wells. Commander of the district, General Phillip Sheridan, held Wells accountable for the unstable political conditions, and removed him from office on June 3, 1867.
