(Thanks to Gary Corrigan for family info)

Had entered the Wauwatosa Sanitarium recently suffering greatly. He was accompanied by his brother.

He was struck and killed by a passenger train nearby. He reportedly stood on the tracks facing the oncoming train half a mile east of the depot. Whether he was confused in illness or temporarily insane is not known. A snowstorm was in progress and he may not have heard the engine as it turns at that point.

He had been the pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Milwaukee until 1895 when illness forced his retirement.

    Age 58
Father and Brother in Dover Illinois

Had also led a church in Montreal for about 20 years. After retiring in 1895 he spent a year in travel in Japan and Hawaii.

"Henry S Welles, well known as a contractor of large public works, died yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, of cerebral hemorrhage, at the home of his son, Dr. Charles Stuart Welles, No. 302 West Seventy-second-st. He was the son of General Henry Welles, of Tioga Point, Penn. He proved himself during the war of the Rebellion as a patriotic a citizen as were his ancestors during the Revolution. He was an intimate friend of Charles Carroll, of Carrollton, Md., a descendant of the famous signer of the Declaration of Independence.
In 1847 his active intelligence identified itself with the rapid spread of railroads, and his first operation was the construction of about twenty-seven miles of the great Western Railroad in Canada. In 1852, he had constructed, under the firm name of H. S. Welles & Co., over one hundred miels of the New York and Erie Railroad, together with sixteen miles of the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad. Succeeding this, the firm's operation included forty miles of the Buffalo and State Line Railroad (now a part of the Lake Shore Railroad); some forty miles of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, a heavy mechanical work; the whole of the Lackawanna and Bloomsburg Railroad; the Warren Railroad of New Jersey, forty miles, and at the breaking out of the war the firm had nearly finished the Brunswick and Albany Railroad, 350 miels across the State of Georgia.
Probably the greatest work of Welles & Co., was the waterworks of the City of Brooklyn a contract of some $5,000,000. Mr. Welles was one of the projectors of the Portage Lake and Lake Superior Ship Canal Company in Michigan. After the Civil War he contracted with the United States Government to clear Savannah Harbor of its sunken obstruction.
He was likewise identified with many private enterprises. he was a man of great personal magnetism, energy and commanding presence, and will be missed by a very large acquaintance. He leaves a widow, two sons - Henry B Welles and Dr. Charles Stuart Wells, a daughter, wife of Dr. Milton Miller of Philadelphia."
