    DEATH SUMMONS FOR CAPT. WELLS

Venerable Longtime Citizen Succumbs to Liver Trouble, Periodical Attack Following Long Confinement

    SETTLED IN CITY IN 1837

His First Wife First White Person to Have Been Buried in Riverside--His War Record

Captain James G. Wells passed to his rest at 10:45 a.m. today at the residence of his son-in-law, H.H. Haley, at 1812 Third avenue. Death was due to liver trouble which had manifested itself in repeated attacks during the last fifteen years and which had been valiantly resisted even though the venerable pioneer was almost within the shadow of ninety years of age.

The last attack came some two weeks ago, at a time when he was just beginning to move about after the closest confinement from an injury which had kept him abed since last June. After his recovery from one of the attacks from his liver, he was seized with a dizzy spell while moving about his room the night of June 10th in search of medicine, and in the fall he badly wrenched his right knee in his effort to save himself from striking his head against the corner of a nearby bureau.

The twist of the knee became complicated with rheumatism, and proved so serious that it was necessary to hold the leg firmly with weights, compelling the sufferer to endure many long hours in one position. Within the last four weeks the improvement in his knee was so marked that movement was possible, and after long confinement the opportunity to move about and see the world outdoors, with the hope that he might soon be able to mingle with his friends, gave him new life for a time.

But during the last two weeks another attack from his liver developed, and the organs which had aided his resolute disposition toward recovery from previous attacks, had become numbed from his long period of inactivity, and his strength was greatly weakened. As the days passed on he became desperately ill, and to those at his bedside the beginning of the end was apparent. Thursday Captain Wells rallied and sat up for a while, and his watchers took new hope, but the improvement was but momentary, and the disease fastened itself more firmly.

During all his suffering and the tedious hours of confinement, Captain Wells was the most patient of sufferers, borne up by the hope of recovery and aided by a rugged constitution. A veritable giant in stature, he was abundantly blessed with strength and activity, and almost to the last maintained an erect and soldierly stature. He was keenly interested in the things of life to the last, and till his injury kept him confined maintained a warm intimacy with his old friends. When he had passed full four score years, his indominitable activity made it possible for him to master the bicycle and during recent years he enjoyed recreation with the wheel. He was probably the oldest man in Illinois to learn the bicycle.

Captain Wells had been familiar with the growth of Moline since 1837, the year he came to this point when he had just reached his majority. He was born near Columbus, Ohio, Feb. 27, 1816. His residence in Moline extended from 1837 to 1855, and from 1868 to the time of his death, with the exception of nine months spent in Indianapolis, Ind., with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Keller, some four years ago.

The captain was twice married. Little is known of his first wife, except that she died in Moline during the very early days of the city. Her body was that of the first white person to have been buried in the old grounds at Riverside cemetery. The first person buried there was a half-breed.

Captain Wells' second marriage was with Miss Jane Thompson in Moline September 14, 1851. They moved to Muscatine in 1855, and from that city he enlisted July 2, 1862, in the army for the civil war. With a spirit of the most ardent patriotism, he undertook and accomplished the recruiting of the company himself, and August 27th of the same year he was mustered in as it captain. The regiment was commanded by Colonel George W. Kincaid and served three years, and came to be known in the army as "The Gray Beards," from the fact that only men who were 45 years of age or older were admitted. The average age of the regiment was 57 years. Captain Wells was mustered in by General Baker and his commission was signed by Governor Kirkwood of Iowa.

The captain was picket officer of the day for six weeks during the siege of Memphis in July and August of 1864. He was honorably discharged from the service at Davenport May 24, 1865.

Returning to Muscatine to take up the life of a civilian, Captain Wells served that city as marshal for a year or more. With his family he took up his residence in Moline in 1868, and before the city was incorporated, he served as a constable, later serving in the capacity of both marshal and deputy marshal, still later as a member of the police force. When he reached his 70th birthday anniversary his fellow officers presented him with a gold-headed cane.

During his years of less activity, Captain Wells served as guard at the Moline bridge to the Arsenal Island, retiring in 1897 after nine years' service. Since that time he has taken life quietly.

The captain was a member of the Masonic fraternity, probably the oldest member of Doric lodge of this city, having been connected with it for more than twenty-five years. He was the possessor of one of the jewels awarded by the order for long continuous members. He was also a member of Graham post, G.A.R., and of the First Methodist church, with which denomination he had been a member for the last 56 years. For twenty years or more he had served as class leader, and was always active in the church work.

Captain Wells is survived by his widow and three children. Fred B. Wells, Mrs. Ella B. Haley and Mrs. Hattie Keller, all of this city.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the house and at 2:30 from the First Methodist church. The Rev. A.R. Morgan, a war comrade of Captain Wells, will assist the Rev. Crumbaker at the special request of the captain. Rev. Morgan will arrive from Canton, Ill.

    September 6, 1904

Friends of Captain Wells paid the last loving tribute to his memory yesterday afternoon. The funeral service was held in the First Methodist church, which was filled with mourners and friends. The Rev. A.R. Morgan of Canton, Ill., preached the sermon and was assisted in the service by the Rev. M.V. Crumbaker of this city.

Graham post, G.A.R., had charge of the services, the third sad duty for the post within a week. Madames Harriet Thompson and F.H. Hyde and Messrs. Fred J. Cooper and D.A. Jones rendered several selections. Honorary pallbearers were Judge J.M. Gould, E.E. Wheelock, A.J. Smith, John Gamble, John McEnary and A.M. Hubbard. Active pallbearers were Dr. L.W. Skidmore, F.A. Burgason, P.C. Simmon, Charles Mapes, T.B. Kearney and Levi F. Cralle.
