"MONROE COUNTY.
LIFE AND DEATH OF REV. NOAH M. WELLS.
Rev. Noah M. Wells, the oldest Presbyterian minister in the United
States, and the first settled Presbyterian minister in Michigan, died at
the residence of his son, Wm. H. Wells, in Erie, Monroe county', Michi-
gan, May 3d, 1880. at the age of 98 years.
Rev. Noah M. Wells was born at Bemis Heights, Saratoga county, N.
Y., July 8, 1782; his father's name being Eleazer Wells, and his moth-
er's maiden name was Joanna Fellows.
In his fourteenth year he was baptized in the Episcopal church. From
his 17th to his 21st year, the young man became a believer in the Univer-
salist doctrine; bat on attaining his majority he experienced a change
in his belief, and became impressed that he must become a preacher of
the gospel.
316 Pioneer Society of Michigan.
His first charge was the Presbyterian Church and society at Galway,
Saratoga county, Avhere he was ordained, and it was at this time that he
married Miss Nancy Hunter, of Stephentown, Rensselaer county, N. Y.
In three years she died, leaving one son.
For five years Mr. Wells preached at Galway, writing and committing
to memory two sermons each week, lecturing each Wednesday evening,
with prayer meeting Friday night and pastoral invitations.
After being two years a widower, Mr. Wells married Miss Jane Lef-
ferts, who afterward died and was buried in the city of Detroit.
Mr. Wells' second charge was at Brownville, Jefferson county, K. Y.,
where he established the first church there, and performed the work
under almost thrilling circumstances.
Early in 1825 he received an urgent invitation to visit Detroit, and in
June of that year he arrived, and found a comfortable wooden church,
with about thirty members, as the first Protestant church in the city,
but they had no organization according to law. Assisted by such men
as Mr. Hastings, Dr. Rice, Messrs. Bingham, Stewart, and others, he
formed a regular Presbyterian Church with a strong band of elders and
thirty-six members, all told. This was the first Presbyterian Church
ever, formed in Michigan.
Mr. Wells continued as pastor of this church until 1836, when his
health failed, and he was succeeded by Mr. Cleveland, whose successor
was Dr. George Duftield.
Seven years before his death, and fifty-five years after he organized
the first Presbyterian church in Detroit, he preached to that congrega^
tion, and offered a prayer in behalf of the church, which the Rev. Mr.
Baker says will be remembered by pastor and people so long as memory
lasts.
The workman dies, but his work remains. Yet a few brief years, and
there will be none left on earth to speak of this man's ministry in this
State. He will onlv be remembered bv what he has done. "

Marshall Philip Welles
WELLES-Marshall Philip Welles 101, born July 29, 1907 in Los Angeles, passed away July 27, 2009 in Arcadia, California. For 35 years, Marshall and his wife Helen were medical missionaries under the Presbyterian Church (USA) in China, the Philippines and Thailand. After growing up in Pasadena, Marshall graduated from Oregon State in 1930 and Rush Medical School, in Chicago, in 1934. The next year he a nd Helen Antisdale were married, and in 1938 they sailed to China as medical missionaries. Soon, however, with war between Japan and the United States imminent, Marshall, Helen and their two sons transferred to the Philippine Islands, where they were caught in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese army and spent the next three years in concentration camps. After rescue by the U.S. Army in 1945, they spent two years in Philadelphia so Marshall could take further training in surgery. In 1947, with th e addition of a daughter, it was back to China, but again only for a short time as the Communists were taking over the country. The Welles family finally found a long-term place for service in Thailand, where they opened the Bangkok Christian Hospital. For the next 23 years, Marshall served as surgeon, internist, obstetrician, chief of staff and director, guiding the hospital from an initial 25 to 160 beds; maintaining First World standards of medical equipment, procedures and nursing care; and exemplifying eternal standards of love and gospel witness. In 1972, Marshall and Helen returned to Pasadena, and he joined a group medical practice and became medical director for Westminister Gardens, a community in Duarte of missionaries and ministers. In 1999, Marshall and several family members returned to Thailand for the 50th anniversary of the Bangkok Christian Hospital, which had by then grown to 300 beds. In 2002 Marshall lost his companion of 67 years as Helen passed away, but his enthusiasm for life continu ed. He remained active at Lake Avenue Church in Pasadena, he was an advocate for prostate cancer support groups, and he regularly visited his children and grandchildren to share in their activities. Hundreds of people joined him in 2007 to celebrate his 100th birthday. During his short final illness, his hospital room was frequently filled with family and friends. Marshall is survived by his three children, Robert Welles of Redlands, Richard Welles of Pine Mountain Club and Patricia Appel of Laguna Beach; eight grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held on August 15 at 10:00 A.M. at Lake Avenue Church, 393 N. Lake Ave., Pasadena, and on August 16 at 3:00 P.M. at Westminister Gardens, 1420 Santo Domingo, Duarte. Gifts may be sent either to Lake Avenue Church (Missions) or Westminister Gardens; memo line: Welles Memorial Fund.
