Fatal Fall From Staging - Accident at Shelburne Falls - Edwin H Wells Dies From Injuries Received While Working on Baptist Church - A Companion Injured.
Edwin H. Wells, 52, of Buckland, who had the contract for painting the woodwork on the Baptist church at Shelburne Falls, fell a distance of 40 feet while at work on a staging yesterday morning about 9 o'clock and died soon after, his neck having been broken. Frank Griffith, who was with him, went down at the same time, struck Mr. Wells, and has a dislocated hip and a sprained wrist. Charles H. Nichols, the third man, caught hold of the ropes holding the staging, and saved himself. Dr. C.L. Upton was called to attend Mr. Wells and Dr. J. S. ---- to care for Mr. Griffith, who was taken into Rev. R. E. Hunt's house.
The staging was a ladder, and one side at least was so rotten that a knife blade could readily be inserted in it. The three men were using the ladder for a swing staging and were at work on the corner on the north side of the church when the accident occurred. In falling the two men narrowly missed striking on the stone sidewalk in front of the church. Nichols is the man who has the contract for repairing the town clock in the spire of the Second Congregational church at Greenfield.
Mr. Wells was the lowest of several bidders for painting the woodwork of the Baptist church. Some of the bids were purposely made high, as the contractors did not care for the job, the execution of which is attended with great risk. Griffith has a wife and two children. Mr Wells had lived in Buckland for many years and had worked at his trade during that time. He leaves a widow, but no children. He was a member of the Buckland grange and was a man well regarded in the community. The funeral will be held at his home in Buckland to-morrow afternoon at 1 o'clock.

    SUICIDE OF FRANK W. WELLS
Killed Himself With a Shotgun - Body Found Yesterday
The body of Frank W. Wells, aged about 40, who had apparently committed suicide, was found yesterday afternoon about 5.30 in the Hathaway pasture, opposite the field barn of F. A. Brooks on the Ashfield road, a short distance above Williamsburg village. A searching party had been hunting for Mr. Wells all day and the body was found by Arthur Damon, a member of the party. Mr. Wells had been fatally wounded in the breast by a charge from a shotgun, which was lying beside him, and which it seemed probable from the circumstances, he had discharged himself. The shoe had been removed from the right foot and it is thought that Mr. Wells did this for the purpose of pulling the trigger with his toes. The shot was probably instantly fatal. Mr. Wells had not appeared to be in an entirely normal condition of mind the last few days, and when he failed to return home after saying he was going out to assist a neighbor Wednesday noon, a search was started, which was continued through yesterday.
Mr. Wells was born in Williamsburg and had conducted his father's farm in late years. He was also sexton of the cemetery and was engaged to some extent in teaming. He married Miss Ettie Cranson of Williamsburg, who survives him with three children, Mildred, Martin, and George. He is also survived by his sister, Mrs. H. S. Packard of Plainfield, a twin brother, Fred of Charlemont, and Jesse of Williamsburg. Medical Examiner Sharks of Easthampton was summoned and the body was placed in charge of Undertaker Fitts of Northampton.
