    ceiving degree spent three years in hos-
    pital work, serving as house surgeon at
    Mary Fletcher Hospital, Burlington; But-
    ler Hospital for the Insane, Providence,
    R. I.; and Danvers (Mass.) Lunatic Hos-
    pital. Was instrumental in starting the
    Barre City Hospital, and is one of the
    trustees and treasurer of that institution;
    is now working on some solution for the
    care and treatment of the ever increasing
    cases of tuberculosis in his home city. Ap-
    pointed assistant surgeon of 1st Regiment
    Vermont Volunteers at outbreak of Span-
    ish-American War; while at Chickamauga
    Park was on duty in 1st division 3rd corps
    hospital as ward surgeon; in charge of
    the hospital train bringing the sick of the
    regiment back to Vermont, and on duty
    at Fort Ethan Allen hospital until all
    were recovered. A Democrat; appointed
    to the board of pension examiners for
    Washington County, February, IPOI, he"
    has held the office of secretary since;
    health officer for city of Barre at various
    times, holding the office at present, having
    been re-appointed in August, 1911; elect-
    ed school commissioner from ward 6,
    March, 1910, for three years; has devoted
    much time in an effort to have physical
    training carried on in the public schools.
    Member of the Congregational Church;
    served several years on business commit-
    tee; scout master for troop of boy scouts
    connected with the church. Member of
    Granite Lodge No. 35, F. & A. M. ; past
    high priest of Granite Chapter, R. A. M. ;
    past commander of St. Aldemar Command-
    ery No. 1 1 ; potentate of Mount Sinai
    Temple, Mystic Shrine, having been elect-
    ed in December, 1911, and as such at-
    tended the meeting of the imperial council
    held in Los Angeles, May, 1912, as chair-
    man of his delegation.

    He received his ])reparatory education in
    the academies of Lyndon, St. Johnsbury,
    and .Ieriden, N. H., and was aftenvards
    graduated from Dartmouth College in the
    class of 1853. He then pursued his profes-
    sional studies with I'resident .Mien of Farm-
    er's College, Cincinnati, and in 1857 was
    admitted to the bar in Sycamore, III., where
    he commenced the pra< ti( e of his profes-
    sion, at the same time editing the DeKalb
    County Sentinel and teaching music, thus
    continuing until the breaking out of the
    civil war. In iSGy'G^ he was in Kansas, a
    portion of the time emi)l()yed as city editor
    of the Leavenworth Daily l imes, and having



    charge of the musical association of that
    city. For some time he traveled in the
    state as correspondent of the Sycamore Re-
    publican, describing the bloody struggles
    that took place during the episodes of 1S56.
    In 1865 he commenced the publication of
    the Vermont I nion at Lyndon, which he
    still continues. In connection with this
    enterprise he has made numerous trips in
    Florida, California, the western and the
    southern states as correspondent of his own
    paper, one of these trips being published
    in book form under the title of "Kditor's
    Run in New Mexico and C'olorado." The
    book received numerous compliments from
    the press and had
    During the first years after leaving col-
    lege, .Ir. Chase divided his time between
    studying law and teaching in Cincinnati, ().,
    having charge for three years of the vocal
    music department in Ohio Female t.'ollege
    and Fanner's College, conducting conven-
    tions, giving concerts, etc. During this
    period he composed different church tunes,
    which were published in the books of that
    date and later.

    Mr. Chase enlisted in 1S61, and had
    charge of the brigade band of the 1 3th III.
    Vols, till their discharge at the end of three
    months service in Southwestern Missouri.

    He was married June 15, 1865,31 .Syca-
    more, III., to Mary K., daughter of Timothy
    and Mary (Waterman) Wells. Their five
    children are : Kverett H., John B., (leorge A.,
    Jennie H., and Nellie L.

    .Mr. Chase is Democratic in his political
    adherence, and for several years held the
    office of police magistrate in Sycamore.
    For twenty years he has been justice of the
    peace in Lyndon. He was the prime mover
    in securing the charter lor the Lyndon
    Ai-ademy and Ciraded School, being for a
    lung time president of the board of direc-
    tors. In i866-'68 he was the I)emo« ratic
    candidate for Congress in the First Vermont
    I )istrict, and was apj>ointed delegate to the
    national conventif)n of that party in St.
    Louis in 1876. His ability as a financier
    has called him to the duties of director in
    the Lyndon National Hank and the Savings
    Hank & Trust Co. of St. Johnsbun,', of
    which he has been president since 1891.

    He has taken the vows of T'ree Masonry,
    and is actively connected with the lodge at
    Lvndon and Haswell Chapter in St. Johns-
    bury.
