He was promoted to Sergeant in 1910, Lieutenant in 1918, Captain in 1926 and in 1935 he became Battalion Chief. In 1928, he was named to the Fire Department Trial Board. He retired on February 1, 1938 [Note: The Washington Post article states 1939]. During his 22 years of service he received citations for rescues in 1919 and 1926 and in 1920 one for special interest in the department. He was awarded the ribbon for bravery when the Knickerbocker Theater collapsed. He was a resident of 626 Ray Drive in Silver Spring, Maryland. He was a member of the Naval Lodge of Masons. He died in the Capitol Theater on Thursday, September 25, 1941 while attending a matinee with his wife. An Emergency Hospital ambulance was summoned and he was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 68 years old and the cause of death was thought to be a heart attack. Survivors included his widow, Mrs. Ada Irene Wells; two daughters: Mrs. Ruth Wells Bradbury of Silver Spring and Mrs. Evelyn Wells Bourbon of Santa Barbara, California and one son, Charles A. Wells Jr. of Silver Spring. Arrangements were by the S.H. Hines Funeral Home at 2910 Fourteenth Street Northwest. Interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
