    On 1 August 1871 he obtained a government patent on 72.04 acres of land under
    the homestead act. The land was in Christian County, Missouri.

    In 1880 the James E. Wells family lived on a farm in the Lincoln Township in
    Christian County Missouri. James was 44 and had been born in Tennessee to
    parents born in Virginia. His wife was Sarrah age 34. Their children included
    James M. age 14, Joseph D. age 9, Mary F. age 7, Wm. L. age 4 and Chillottie A.
    age 2. A 20 year old farm hand named John Bird lived with the Wells family. (ED
    9, page 30A)

    He and his wife, his mother and a brother are buried in the Wise Hill Cemetery
    in Clever, Christian Co, MO.
