William Legrand Wells

M, #117043, b. 13 December 1827, d. 12 June 1907
  • Birth*: 13 December 1827; Virginia, USA
  • (Groom) Marriage: circa 1850; prob., Wheeling, Ohio Co., West Virginia, USA; Bride=Margaret Marshall
  • Death*: 12 June 1907; Wheeling, Ohio Co., West Virginia, USA
  • Burial*: 12 June 1907; Bellaire, Belmont Co., Ohio, USA; Parents are James Wells and Charlotte (nee?) some trees have Kemp however unverified. William's parents James 46 born Virginia and Charlotte 43 born Maryland appear on the 1850 census, Goshen, Champaign, Ohio, with William's siblings John E 18, Ann M 16, Thomas 14, James 13, Caroline 11, Albert 4 all born Virginia. page 3/32.

William 22 and Margaret 19 are listed on page 2/32 1850 census, Goshen, where he is a farmer, with daughter Eliza J 1. Also in household is his sister Sarah Jane 8.

There is a death record for James Wells, a farmer, age 57 born VA, died 1860, Brooke County, VA/WV of typhoid fever.

Maiden name Marshall of wife from death records of some children. Death record for daughter Anna Maria Barrett gives both William and Margaret's birthplace as Morgantown, PA, which is Berks County--if correct. Others give Monongalia County, Virginia/WV.

William and Margaret appear on the 1860 census, Wheeling, VA/WV, which indicates they are both born Pennsylvania, with children Mary F 9, William 6, Margaret 3 and Fannie M 6 mons. Also in household is Alfred Marshall 60 born PA. (could this be her father?)

William served in Civil War, Union, Private, Independent Battery, Company D, 1st Regiment, West Virginia, Light Artillery. His volunteer enlistment papers at Wheeling, August 13, 1864, give Monongalia County, VA/WV as his birthplace, occupation cooper, age 36 and 8 months.

The 1870 census, Wheeling, finds William a cooper and Margaret (this time birthplace VA) with children Mary, William, Margaret and Anna with new children Virginia 7, Ida 4 and James 6 mons.

The family is residing in Bellaire, Belmont, Ohio, on the 1880 census, which gives his parents' birthplaces as Maryland. Children are West Virginia 18, Ida Belle 14, and Emma 6. Also with them is his widowed mother Charlotte Wells 76 born MD.
His mother is living in Republic County, Kansas, on 1885 census, with her married daughter Sarah Jane and Ansel Skeels. Sarah's first husband William H. Sandels/Sandals died in Civil War.

Widowed on the 1900 census, Bellaire, he is living with his married daughter Emma and John Foreman family.

His WV death record gives West Virginia as birthplace, informant was his daughter Annie Wells Barrett. It gives burial location simply as Bellaire and one could presume Greenwood/Rose Hill since his wife and some of their children are buried there.
