- Note: From the Harper Sentinel - Harper, Kansas, Newspaper dated Friday, March21, 1902 KILLED BY AN EXPLOSION As the result of an explosion of giant powder in a stove, 'Grandma' Wellswas fatally injured and her daughter seriously wounded. Last Friday evening Mrs. Wells and her daughter and two sons, whose homeis near Jett, O. T. and who were on their way to Reno county to visitrelatives stopped at the home of Fred Swisher, on Geo. Melvin's placenear Crystal Springs, and asked accommodations for the evening. Mr.Swisher was unable to accommodate them and directed them to a vacanthouse near by for shelter. By the side of a house was an old rusty stoveand as a precaution to setting fire to anything the fire was built on thestove. The oven doors were probably so badly rusted that they could notbe opened. Mrs. Wells was busy preparing supper and was just at thepoint of removing some meat from the stove when a terrific explosionoccurred. Mrs. Wells was hurled fifty feet and was found unconscious. Her daughter was knocked down and severely cut with flying debris. Oneof the boys was thrown about twenty feet and stunned. The other boy wasunhurt. Word was sent to Harper and Doctors Ervin and Winbigler went to the sceneof accident. On examination they found Mrs. Wells barely alive with anugly gash in the throat laying bare the jugular vein and the wind pipe. There wasalso a large hole in the temple-in fact, fully eighty separate woundswere inflicted. She never regained consciousness and died about noon thenext day. The daughter also received some severe cuts and bruises, though not dangerous. The cause of the explosion is supposed to have been from the giantpowder. Some two years ago giant powder was used in blasting a well nearby and it is supposed that some of the powder had been placed in thestove to be kept dry. The stove was blown into fragments and the entireend of the house next the stove torn out. The explosion was heard byseveral Harper people. The following is another version of the explosion accident taken from theHarper Advocate - Harper, Kansas, Newspaper dated Friday, March 1902. BLASTING POWDER IN THE STOVE Mrs. Wells, an old lady, died at 1:30 last Saturday from injuriesreceived by the explosion of blasting powder. Mrs. Wells and two sonsand a grand daughter, from near Jet, Oklahoma, camped at the Frank Melvinfarm, seven miles west, last Friday night. Owing to the high wind theybuilt a fire in an old stove that stood near the farm house, and whensupper was being taken up the explosion occurred. The two women werestanding over and near the stove and received the greatest injuries.Mrs. Wells was wounded in eighty places, and the severest being to thethroat, which no doubt caused her death. She never recovered from theshock. The grand daughter was wounded and burned in many places on herright side. The oldest son was blown a distance of about twenty-fivefeet, but received no severe bruises. The youngest son was attending tothe horses about sixty feet from the stove and was also knocked down. The latter boy supposed they had been struck by lightning and immediatelywent after help. It was not discovered that it was an explosion of thestove until they neighbors gathered in. Medical assistance wasimmediately sent for, and Dr. J. B. Ervin went out, but from the starthad no hope of helping the old lady. They were on their way toCastleton, Kingman county, on a visit. On Saturday two more sons came upfrom Oklahoma and took their mother's remains back for burial. Several months ago the well was put down deeper and giant powder wasused. The powder was place in the old stove so as to keep it dry. Thehouse was also badly wrecked.2
