Rev. Victor Graver will officiate and burial will be in the KaromaCemetery under the direction of Voss Funeral Home. A native of Kansas, he came to Oklahoma shortly after the opening of theCherokee Strip. He had lived east of Goltry most of his life. Survivors include his widow, Frankie, of the home; three daughters, Mrs.Frank (Myrna) Schultz, Hillsdale, Oklahoma; Mrs. Vincent (Ida Mae)Melott, Pond Creek, Oklahoma; Mrs. Iva Marie Lukehart, Farmington, NewMexico; and five sons, Roy, Goltry; Marion, Kremlin, Oklahoma; Glen,Wichita, Kansas; Bob, Newton, Kansas; and Cecil, Chickasha, Oklahoma. Also two sisters, Mrs. Millie Tarr and Mrs. Ruth Goldsmith, both of Enid,Oklahoma; and one brother, Carl Wells, Jet; 20 grandchildren and 10great-grandchildren. The body will lie in state at the Voss Funeral Home at Goltry untilservice time.⁷

Wells, Jet; Virgil Lee Wells, Springdale, Arkansas;Marvin Wells, Jet; four daughters, Mrs. Ernest (Laveta)Porter, PoncaCity; Mrs. Virgil (Vivian) Watson, Tulsa; Mrs. Russel (Ada Pearl)Scott, Tulsa and Mrs. David (Doris) Jones, Enid; two sisters. • Note: Obituary of Millie Alice Wells Tarr - February 11, 1971 Millie A. Tarr, 75, 1718 West James, died in a local hospitalFriday morning following a short illness. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Ladusau-EvansChapel with the Rev. Leslie G. Everitt, Jr. officiating. Burial willfollow in the Karoma Cemetery at Goltry under the direction ofLadusau-Evans. She was born May 14, 1895, at Karoma, now Goltry, and livedthere until 1939, when she moved to Pampa, Texas. She came to Enid in1946, living here since that time. She and Fred V. Tarr were married in 1917 and he preceded herin death in 1946. She was also preceded in death by a son, Elmer JosephTarr who died in infancy. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Bus (Pauline) Edwards,Enid; Mrs. Frank (Madeline) McMahan, Amarillo, Texas; and Mrs. Leo(Rose) Kirchrer, Enid; a son, Harold D. Tarr, Goltry; 10 grandchildren,three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Goldsmith of Enid; anumber of nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, withthe church and funeral home as fund custodians.⁴

• Note: Obituary of Homer E. Wells - Homer E. Wells, 62, died at this farm home six miles southwestof Jet at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday. He had not been in the best of health buthis death was unexpected. He was brought to the hospital by ambulancewhere he was pronounced dead. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Timberlake Methodist church southwest of Jet. Rev. Franklin George and Rev. OscarWilkie will officiate, with burial following in the Timberlake cemeteryunder the direction of Henninger-Allen Funeral home. He was a native Oklahoman, having been born near Goltry, andhad lived in the Goltry-Jet community all of his life. Wells was a member of the Congregational church of Goltry. Survivors include his wife, the former Helen Bell of Enid; oneson, Robert E. Wells, graduate student at the University of Oklahoma;two brothers, Carl Wells, Jet, and Gene Wells, Goltry; three sisters,Mrs. Millie Tarr, Mrs. Ruth Goldsmith, and Mrs. Mabel Wethington, all of Enid. Pallbearers will be Merle Hutcheson, Don Shaklee, Bill Crain,Merle Carter, John Schmook, Gerald Pfalser.³

Mrs. Goldsmith was a member of the Congregational Church atGoltry, the American Business Women's Association and the AmericanAssociation of Retired Persons. She was preceded in death by her husbandin 1941. Her only survivors are two nieces, Pauline Edwards and Rose(Mrs. Leo Kirchner) of Enid; and one nephew, Robert Wells, Altanta,Georgia.⁴

  “Elizabeth Nichols Wells’ father, Capt. Nichols, as he was called, was a man of wealth and influence, who took a leading part in the affairs of the town and church. He and his son Phillip had a store and wharf on the Pequonnock River, from which place they carried on a thriving trade with the West Indies.”

• Note: from Katherine Wells: “Philip Wells, the oldest child of Hezekiah and Elizabeth Nichols Wells, was born in Stratford November 28, 1758, and was doubtless the namesake of his mother’s brother, Philip Nichols. He was baptized into the Congregational Church, November, 1758 and both his parents being of that denomination was probably brought up in that faith.”
  
  “As Philip Wells, when he removed to New Milford some thirty nine years later, was a zealous Episcopalian, a word as to the religions beliefs of our Stratford ancestor is necessary. The first settlers of that town were of the most pronounced type of Puritan. Unlike the Pilgrims, or Separatists, they had no wish to leave the mother church, but longed for its purification. In 1639, under the leadership of Rev Adam Blakeman, they were organized into a local body called the ‘Church of Christ at Stratford.’ Mr. Blakeman was an ordained priest of the Church of England, but had been silenced by his bishop for nonconformity. Without doubt the Episcopal form of service was used during the twenty-six years of his ministry. At his death the little band of men and women he had gathered together formed the nucleus from which came the First Congregational Church of Stratford. They erected their first meeting-house on Elm Street. For the next hundred years the church and the town were one.”
  
  “The first four of our Stratford ancestors were all members of this church. Thomas Wells being deacon as well. (Dea. Thomas 3rd Generation). The Stiles, Nichols and Tomlinsons also were Congregationalists.”
  
  “Meanwhile a tiny spark of Episcopacy still lingered in the hearts of some of the people of Stratford, kept alive by the occasional visit of some missionary. From 1740 to 1750 was a time of religious controversy among the churches of New England. In 1741, some of the most influential members of the Congregational Church asked to be dismissed, and declared themselves Episcopalians; among this number were Theophilus Nichols and his wife, for twenty years members of the Congregational Church. In 1748 and 1749 they erected a church, calling it ‘Christ Church,’ in memory of that first church a hundred years before. This was the first Episcopal Church in the State.”
  
  “On the Episcopal Church records is found the death of Theophilus Nichols, April 8, 1774.”
  
  “Hezekiah Wells and his wife lived and died Congregationalists, but evidently through the influence of his grandfather, Philip Wells became an Episcopalian."
  
  “As a young man Philip Wells served as supercargo on a vessel trading between New England and the West Indies. Doubtless the vessel was owned by either his grandfather or uncle. The principal cargo was rum and molasses. Later he seems to have owned one-eighth part of the sloop Sharlot, a vessel of about a hundred tons burden, and, later still, is in some way interested in the brig Luiritia, as he hired a certain William Whitney to act as sailing master.”
  
  “Philip Wells married Elisabeth, daughter of Joseph Tomlinson, of Stratford, April 3, 1776. Elisabeth Tomlinson was born in 1757, and was baptized in the Congregational Church, October 1, 1758. There were nine children by the marriage, six of whom were born in Stratford. The following is copied from the town records:

  “A little anecdote has come down to us, through her son Tomlinson, of Great-grandmother Elisabeth. One training(sic) day she and Betty, then a child of two, were alone together. The child, in some way, escaped her mother’s surveillance and fell into the well. A neighbor, who was a cripple, was the only man within call, but Great-grandmother Elisabeth lacked neither strength nor courage, for by the time the neighbor could hobble to the scene of action she was climbing out of the well with her baby in her arms.”
  
  “As far as known Philip Wells took no part in the Revolutionary War, and we are left somewhat in doubt as to which side he gave his sympathies. The Episcopalians of Stratford were, for the most part patriots, but were looked upon with suspicion by their fellow townsmen on account of their rector, who was an ardent Royalist. The Rev. Mr. Kneeland had been ordained in England and served for a time as chaplain in a British regiment. Dr. Cornwall, rector of Christ sends me (Katherine) this:”
  
  “Mr. Kneeland died a prisoner to the patriots, in his own house, April 17, 1777. Probably he was under constant surveillance and was not allowed out of the parish or town. It has been related that on the Sunday after the battle of Lexington, when Mr. Kneeland began the prayer for the King and Royal Family, a member of the congregation rose in his pew and declared that the prayer should not be used, for George III was the enemy of the Colonies; whereupon Mr. Kneeland closed the book and pronounced the benediction, and, according to this account, the church was closed until the end of the war.”
  
  “Dr. Cornwall goes on to say, however, that Mr. Kneeland probably continued the services of the church during his lifetime, omitting, most likely, the offending prayer. At his death a lay reader officiated for a time and after that the Rev. John Marshall, of Woodbury, officiated every third Sunday until 1788.”
  
  “In May, 1776, the Council and Representatives in General Court assembled, enacted various laws in regard to the several forms of oaths.”
  
  The Freeman’s oath was as follows: ‘You, A.B., being by the providence of God an inhabitant within this Colony of Connecticut, and now to be made free of the same, do swear by the ever-living God to be true and faithful to the Governor and Company of said Colony and the Government thereof as now established and is expressed by charter: and whensoever you shall give your vote or suffrage touching any matter which concerns this Colony, being called thereunto, you will give it as in your conscience you shall judge will conduce to the best good of the same, without respect of persons or favor of any man. So help you God.’”
  
  “The oath previous to this read as follows: ‘You, A.B., being by the providence of God an inhabitant within this His Majesty’s Colony of Connecticut, and now to be made fee of the same, do swear by the ever living God, that you will be true, and faithful to his Majesty King George, the second, and to his lawful successors: and to the government of H is Majesty’s said colony as established by charter,’ etc.”
  
  This Freeman’s oath or the ‘Oath of Fidelity’, as it was called, was taken by Philip Wells, September 16, 1777. A paper certifying to that effect, and duly attested by Aaron Benjamin, the Town Clerk, is still (as of 1911) in existence, and in the possession of Philip Wells, a great-grandson. That Philip Wells took this oath of fidelity in the darkest hour of the American Revolution, should surely be counted as an act of patriotism.”
  
  “In the spring of 1792, Philip Wells removed with his family to New Milford. The Stratford records show that in 1787 and 1788, and even as late as 1790, he was buying land in that town. In February, 1792, he was still living there, but was disposing of his real estate; it was not until 1794 that the last of the Stratford property was sold.”
  
  “The first purchase of real estate in New Milford was made April 23, 1792, and consisted of fifteen acres of land, ‘lying two miles north of the town plat and on the east side of the public road to Kent.’ The deed was recorded in the name of Elisabeth Wells. Two months later (June 8), the purchase of the land on which the Wells homestead now stands, was made. It was bought of John Murray, of New York City, and formerly owned by Lemuel Buck and Josiah Starr. It consisted of twenty-five acres of land, with a grist mill and dwelling house standing thereon; this dwelling house was probably the first erected in Wellsville, although it is barely possible that the house of Jeremiah Homes may have antedated it.”
  
  “It stood about sixty feet north of the present homestead, and on the site of the house now occupied by John Wells, (father of George Wells and grandfather of J. Stuart Wells) In the erection of the present building, in 1898, the fireplace of the old house, buried for ninety years, was unearthed, and many of the stones used for the new foundation. In this old house were born the three youngest children:

  Here also were married the two oldest daughters; Betty to Cyrus Northrop, July 27, 1796, and Sarah, to Bradley Marsh, January 10, 1805; this on authority of Col. William Starr, who married Sarah, daughter of Betty Wells Northrop. Joseph Wells, afterwards of deacon of the Baptist church at Northville, probably went from this house to marry his first wife, Jane Clark, February 20, 1803.”
  
  “Here in New Milford, Philip Wells followed the vocation of his father before him, that of mill-wright. The grist Mill purchased of John Murray was eventually used as a carding and fulling mill. In May, 1806, in conjunction with his son, Hezekiah, a second mill site, with fulling-mill standing thereon, was purchased. This mill was situated on Spruce Island, at a place called the Little Falls, near the east bank of the great river (Housatonic); and was opposite the site now occupied by the Electric Light Works. The records also show that twenty acres of land were added to the north of the home plot.”
  
  “The idea that our New England ancestors were slaveholders, seems very strange indeed, but, without doubt, a part of the property brought by Philip Wells and his wife from Stratford to their new home in New Milford, consisted of the slave, Rhoda. The following is taken from the New Milford records:
  
  EMANCIPATION OF RHODA, A NEGRO WOMAN:
  
  We the subscribers, having examined into age, character and health of Rhoda, a negro woman, now a slave to Philip Wells, she having signified to us her desire to be freed and set at liberty from her said master’s do by these give liberty and approve of her manumission.

  “Philip Wells had no sooner settled in his new home than he at once identified himself with the members of St. John’s Episcopal Church. An old book, in the keeping of the clerk of St. John’s parish, bears this inscription on its flyleaf:
  
  ‘St John’s Church Book of Records, New Milford, April 29, 1784’
  
  It contains the minutes of the vestry meetings of the parish, and tells of the work, and who were the workers of that early time. Between 1790 and 1812, the names of Stephen Miles, Solomon Hill, John McEuen, Angus Ferriss, Philip Wells and Briggs Ingersoll appear again and again on its pages.”
  
  “In April , 1793, it was voted to lay a tax of 6d on the pound, ‘To defray the Arrearages for Repairing the church’ and David Fairchild, Angus Ferris and Philip Wells were named as collectors. In 1796, Philip Wells was appointed Lay Delegate, and was one of a committee to sell the glebe lot. In 1799 and 1800, he acted as clerk of the meetings, also in 1809, 1810, and 1811, he was also on the society’s committee for five years. In 1800 he was elected warden, and in 1808 and 1809, vestryman.
  
  “It was while they were living in New Milford, that Elisabeth Wells and her young son, Tomlinson, were confirmed by Bishop Jarvis, the second Bishop of Connecticut.”
  
  “It was probably in 1811, that Philip Wells began the erection of the house that has, for the last hundred years, sheltered those of the name who have remained on the original site. It was ready for occupancy in 1812. Until 1870, when certain changes were made, the date of the building was plainly marked in the plaster above the ash hole in the south cellar.”
  
  “The house was typical of the time in which it was built. It was thirty-six feet long by twenty-five wide, and a story and a half high. From the big stone steps, the front door opened into a narrow hall, with its winding staircase leading to the second story. On each side of the hall was a large room, and at the back was the pantry, on the north, and the equally tiny bedroom on the south, with the big kitchen between the two. The chimney, as large as a good-sized room was of stone up to the second story. The great fireplace in the kitchen was guarded by the hearthstone four by ten feet. On the right hand side of the fireplace was the big brick oven; and on the south, the flue that carried the ashes to the cellar. Upstairs, the big south chamber was finished off, but the two north chambers and the tiny east chamber were probably left to be finished at some later dare. The timbers of the house were all massive and hewn by hand; even the rafters were five inches in thickness, and the nails were all hand wrought. So well did our forefather build, that except for some untoward event, there is no reason why the old house should not celebrate its two hundredth anniversary.”
  
  “In a letter to a nephew, filled with family reminiscences, Mrs. John Hubbard, a granddaughter, writes the following about the house: ‘As long as Grandmother Wells lived, the place, I am very sure, belonged to her; and I remember distinctly about the settlement of the estate. I think she had property from her father, Joseph Tomlinson, and that the place was her own always.’ This was doubtless true, as later, when the mill property was deeded to two of the sons, no mention was made of the house.’”
  
  “It was probably in the summer of 1812 that Philip Wells, with his wife and three youngest children, removed to Litchfield. The records of that town show that in 1811 he purchased a sawmill of John Bishop, said Bishop reserving possession until April 1, 1812.”
  
  “In New Milford, the fulling mill on the great river had been deeded to Hezekiah Wells some time previous, Philip Wells reserving for himself certain rights and privileges; now the mill property north of the village was deeded to Philip , Jr, and Stephen.. The deed was dated June 6, 1812, and the place designated as ‘Wells’ mill;’ it was not until s a somewhat later date that it became known as ‘Wellsville’.”
  
  “In Litchfield, Philip Wells purchased a place on East Street, where he lived the remainder of his lifetime. He engaged in the same occupation there as in New Milford, operating a carding and fulling mill. He became a member of the Masonic Lodge, and as such was entitled to certain privileges, including the use of its library. His son, Tomlinson Wells, was drafted for the War of 1812 from Litchfield, and went from that town to serve throughout a part of the war; before its close his father procured for him a substitute.”
  
  “Philip Wells died at his home on East Street, December 23, 1818, in his sixty-fifth year; and was buried in East Cemetery.”
  
  “After his father’s death, Tomlinson Wells carried on the business in Litchfield. He built the Wells homestead on East Street, now owned by Philip Hubbard, a grandson.”
  
  “Elisabeth Wells came back to New Milford and lived for some time with her son, Philip Jr. The northwest room was given up to her use. To the children of the neighborhood, she was known as Aunt Betty Wells. She afterwards returned to Litchfield, and died at the home of her son, Tomlinson, November 27, 1848, aged 91. She was laid to rest by the side of her husband , for whom she had most sincerely mourned.”
  
  “The homestead in Wellsville, erected by Philip Wells, has reached its hundredth anniversary in this year of our Lord 1912. It has sheltered five generations, and although it has passed through several hands, has always remained in the family. Thirteen of the name have been born under its roof; nine grandchildren: Philip, Jane, Cyrus, Elisabeth Tomlinson, Sarah, William, Edwin, Anna, and Stephen; and four great-grandchildren, Edward, Charlotte, Katherine (the author of this history) and John. (George’s father, Stuart's Grandfather). There have been four deaths: a son, Stephen, Feb 22, 1845, and three grandchildren: Anna Nov 8, 1836, and Stephen, Mar. 14, 1843, children of Philip Jr. and Edgar Curtiss, December 2 , 1871, son of Hezekiah.”

  "Samuel Welles, third child and eldest son of Capt. Samuel Welles, Jr. and his wife, Ruth, daughter of Edmund and Mery (____) Rice, was born in that part of the ancient town of Wethersfield, Connecticut, lying cast of the Connecticut River, on the 24th of December 1689. Two days later, the inhabitants voted their consent for this portion to become a separate township; an act of incorporation was obtained in 1690, and the new settlement received the name of Glastonbury two years leter.
  
  He studied theology, and was ordained, on the 5th of Dec 1711, the second pastor of the Church in Lebanon, Connecticut. The pulpit had been vacant for upwards of three years, and it is probably that he had preached there for some time before ordination. On the 15th of Sep 1719, he married Hannah Arnold, born Dec 20, 1695, the only child of Barachiah Arnold, of Boston. Her father had died in 1703 and her mother (Abigail, daughter of Deacon Theophilus Frary), who survived until 1725, seems to have accumulated a considerable property by shop-keeping; the Boylston Market (corner of Washington and Boylston Streets, Boston) was built on land brought by Hannah Welles to her husband. In consequence of this marriage, and the need of looking after his wife's property, he was dismissed in 1722 from his partoral charge, -- the vote of the church to this effect being confirmed by the council which met (Dec 4, 1722) to ordain his successor. He removed to Boston, where he accumulated more wealth, becoming one of the richest men in the town, and highly respected. He joined the Old South Church, by letter from the First Church in Lebanon, April 23, 1728. He was from 1727 to 1724 a member of the House of Representatives, and in that capacity was the author of many of the later papers in the memorable controversy with Governor Burnet regarding his salary. (Hutchinson's Hist. of Mass, ii, 348)
  
  As early as 1739 he was appointed a Justice of the Peace. He was a member of the Governor's Council, in 1735-38, 1740, 1747, and 1748 (he was also chosen in 1734 but declined ot serve) and from January 8, 1755, until his death, was a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for Suffolk County. It will further serve to show the position which he held, to mention some of the special duties entrusted to him. In June, 1733, he was one of a committee of five, to express the thanks of the House to General Oglethorpe; in Sep 1765, he was one of a committee of seven (including James Otis and Samuel Adams) to convey similar sentiments to General Conway and Colonel Barr'e, for their speeches in Parliament in favor of the Colonies. In 1754 he was at the head of the Massachusetts delegation (though Governor Hutchinson was also of the number) to the memorable Congress at Albany of Commissioners from the Colonies, before which Franklin brought his plan of union.
  
  This convention, Governor Hutchinson wrote in his History (iii, 20), 'was the most deserving of respect of any which had ever been convened in America, whether we consider the Colonies which were represented, the rank and characters of the delegates, or the purposes for which it was convened.' Three of the five Massachusetts delegates were Yale graduates.
  
  In 1756, he was on a commission, with Hutchinson and Sir William Pepperrell, to meet Lord Loudon (Commander in Chief of the British Forces in America) in Albany, to devise means for relieving Massachusetts from her wardebt; and in 1757 he was a Commissioner of the Province at a conference in Boston between Lord Loudon and the delegates of the New England Colonies, respecting the prosecution of the war against the French.
  
  He died in Boston, May 20, 1770, in his 81st year, having reached a greater age that any preceding graduate of the College, and having been for seven years the senior surviving graduate. His wife died in Boston, 'after a long indisposion,' Oct 14 1765, in her 70th year. His two sons, Samuel and Arnold graduated at Harvard College in 1744 and 1745, respectively, standing at the head of their classes in the order of family rank, and leaving families who have maintained a distinguished position of society. His only daughter died without issue."³

  "Jonathan Welles, the eighth child and fourth son of the Hon. Thomas Welles, of Glastonbury, Connecticut (a member of the Governor's Council from 1751 to 1761), and a nephew of the Rev. Samuel Welles (Yale 1707), was born in Glastonbury, August 9, 1732. His mother was Martha, daughter of the Hon. William and Elizabeth (Stanley) Pitkin, of East Hartford.
  During the year 1753-54 he taught the Hopkins Grammar School in New Haven, and then for over a year until April 1756, he served as a Tutor in the College. He then settled on a farm in his native town, and married Catharine SALTONSTALL, a sister of his classmate, born in 1734. He was sent to the General Assembly as a representative in 1760, and to twenty-six subsequent sessions in the next twenty years. In 1770 he was made a captain in the militia, and in 1773 received a commission as Justice of the Peace. Meantime he was largely entrusted with other public business. About 1774 he became embarrassed in his affairs, and was obliged to petition the Assembly for protection from imprisonment for debt.
  He died in Glastonbury, January 17, 1792, in his 60th year.
  After the death of his first wife he married Mabel, widow of Jonathan Hills, and daughter of Jonathan and Mabel (Olmsted) Stanley, of East Hartford.
