SUFFERING ENDED.
H. PINCKNEY WELLS PASSED AWAY AT 4:45 O'CLOCK YESTERDAY MORNING.
WAS ILL ONLY A FEW DAYS.
TAKEN DOWN WITH PNEUMONIA AND GASTRITIS DEVELOPED - THE NEWS OF HIS DEATH CAST A GLOOM OVER THE CITY. HE WAS A PROMINENT ATTORNEY AND GOOD CITIZEN - FUNERAL TODAY.
After a brief illness H. Pinckeny Wells, Jr., aged 36, one of the best known attorneys and most prominent citizens of Shreveport, died at 4:45 o'clock yesterday morning at his residence on Edwards street. He had been sick only eight days with pneumonia and gastritis, but from the very first his condition was considered serious.
The news of his death yesterday morning, while learned with deep sorrow and regret by his numerous friends and acquaintances, did not come altogether as a surprise, because since Thursday night practically every iota of hope of his recovery had been abandoned by his immediate family and attending physicians.
Out of respect of his memory, at the close of the motion hour yesterday morning, the District Court was adjourned by Judge Bell, who appointed a committee, composed of Attorney R. G. Pleasant, Emerson Bentley, and P. M. Welsh, to draft appropriate resolutions and to report the same tomorrow (Monday) morning at 10 o'clock. Captain Welsh suggested that court be adjourned and Colonel Pleasants asked for the resolutions committee to be appointed.
In the death of Pinckney Wells, an able attorney, active citizen, true friend and loving and devoted son and husband has been lost to Shreveport. To know him was to like him, as was shown by the many anxious questions during his short illness. Not only his old tried and true friends, but others who had known him but a little while, were eager for some word of encouragement from the bedside. And when the intelligence of his death spread gloom was cast over the entire city.
Born near Delhi, in that portion of old Carroll parish now known as Richland parish, Mr. Wells, after receiving an education at a school in Tennessee and a college in Valparaiso, Ind., accepted an appointment in the custom house in New Orleans, at the expiration of which he entered Tulane Law School, from which he received his diploma with high honors in 1890. Then he returned to Richland parish and entered into partnership with his father in the practice of law.
He came to Shreveport seven years ago and quickly won a place at the local bar. His practice was almost exclusively criminal cases, and he was perhaps the most familiar figure for the defendants in the police courts. He was an able orator and appeared often on public occasions.
In 1901 he was married to Miss Juanita Seixas, who survives him.
Mr. Wells was an active member of Shreveport Lodge No. 122, of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Sand Beach Camp 131, Woodmen of the World, and the local Red Men. Members of these different organizations will accompany the remains to the last resting place this afternoon asking the brothers to meet at the different lodge rooms to prepare for the obsequies.
Besides his wife, the deceased is survived by his parents, Captain and Mrs. H. Pinckney Wells, Sr., a sister, Mrs. Annie L. Smith of Shreveport, and two brothers. One of his brothers, Percy, is a member of the United States Army Corps in the government hospital at Hot Springs, Ark., while the other, Will T., is in the employ of the Texas & Pacific railroad.
The funeral will take place this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the home on Edwards street. The obsequies will be conducted by the Elks, interment being in Greenwood cemetery.

MEMORIAL SERVICES.
HELD YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AT GREENWOOD CEMETERY BY THE WOODMEN.
TO THE MEMORY OF H. P. WELLS.
Oration Delivered by Hon. Morris Sheppard, of Texarkana, By Request of Deceased During His Life Time. Beautiful Services Conducted By the Woodmen of the World.
Yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock the three local lodges of the Woodmen of the World met at Sand Beach camp and marched in a body to the Greenwood Cemetery to the strains of two bands of music where the unveiling ceremonies of the late H. Pinckney Wells were held at 4 o'clock. The line of march was headed by L. C. Butler.
In the procession were a large number of the most prominent citizens of Shreveport in carriages.
Congressman J. F. Watkins of this district, came over from Minden and occupied a carriage with Mrs. H. P. Wells and Hon. Morris Sheppard, who delivered the oration.
At the cemetery several hundred citizens of Shreveport who knew and admired H. Pinckney Wells in his life time were assembled.
The regular unveiling ceremonies were performed at the grave by Sand Beach camp, over which J. Mustachio, consul commander, presided. At the conclusion of which B. H. Litchenstein, who acted as master of ceremonies, introduced Hon. Morris Sheppard of Texarkana, who delivered one of the most eloquent addresses ever heard in Shreveport.
The first portion of Mr. Sheppard's address was devoted to a description of the nature and philosophy of death. He recited the dying scenes in the lives of Nero, Mirabeau, Robert Emmet, Napoleon and others, giving their last words and showing how they encountered death by drawing lessons therefrom. He painted the despairing death of the man surrounded by his family, for whom he had made no provision. He showed that the most definitive and permanent form of protection against the consequences of death was found in fraternal life insurance.
It was an unfortunate fact he said that only one person in four of insurance age in the United States carried a life insurance policy. He said that in this condition was to be found the most fruitful source of poverty and crime.
He said that a Woodman would die with the sweet consolation that he had provided for his loved ones, a consolation so sweet and tender, an assurance so glorious that the shadows of the grave were dissolved in the radiance of immortality. He said the principle of fraternity had found its original expression in the life and teachings of Christ and supported this assertion with a panoramic review of the life and deeds of Christ.
He then paid an affectionate tribute to the late H. Pinckney Wells, telling of the agreement between himself and Mr. Wells to the effect that whoever should die first the other would deliver the funeral oration. He said he had first met "Pink" Wells at the meeting of the supreme representative body of the Woodmen of the World at Columbus, Ohio, in 1901, stating that Mr. Wells as a delegate from Louisiana took a prominent and influential part in the deliberations of that great fraternal body. He told of the remarkable speech delivered by Mr. Wells at that meeting at a memorial service in honor of the Confederate dead at Camp Chase, Ohio, the site of the famous military prison. He said that the speech of Mr. Wells on that occasion would live in the hearts of its hearers, an ever deepening and resplendent harmony.
He said Mr. Wells was an able lawyer, gifted orator and a tireless and convincing advocate and that through the superior qualities of an unusual intellect there radiated a geniality and a tenderness that made love follow swift on admiration.
Mr. Sheppard concluded with a peroration on the universal promise of immortality and the watchfulness and mercy of God.
Miss Nannie Bateman read the poem.
The sextette was composed of L. Parker, O. F. Simmons, H. G. Harper, J. E. Richardson, A. J. Newman and J. W. Downs.
