Abner WELLS Sr was born on 10 Jan or Mar 1763, probably in Nottingham, Chester, Pennsylvania. He did not serve in the Revolutionary War because he was a Quaker. Quakers were often considered to be Tories because they were opposed to all war and would therefore not support the revolutionaries. The Quakers refused to use the new continental currency or pay taxes because the money was issued to fund the war effort. Some Quaker families were forced to quarter revolutionary soldiers. The Quaker belief of not swearing or affirming oaths, even to the new government, also caused resentment toward Quakers. Abner was a member at Nottingham Monthly Meeting in Chester, Pennsylvania.

About 1783, Abner married Deborah Sidwell at the Nottingham MM.

The family apparently lived in Monongalia County, then Virginia, for some time.
Abner witnessed the marriage of Richard Follis and Phebe Dillon on 16 May 1798 at Hopewell MM in Winchester, then Frederick Co., Virginia. Abner has not been found in 1800 census. They have been moving to Belmont Co., OH.
The Concord MM in Belmont Co., OH. was opened 19 Dec 1801. Cheaper land and the promise that there would be no slavery north and west of the Ohio River drew many Quakers to Ohio. Abner and family were received at the Concord Monthly Meeting from Nottingham MM (Chester Co., PA) on a certificate dated 27 Nov 1802.
John Hall and Abner Wells (not proven to be this Abner) were appointed guardians for Joseph, Nathan & William Hall, children of Jesse Hall in Dec 1807 in Jefferson, Ohio.

Abner Wells (not proven to this Abner) purchased items from the estate of Thomas Hains. in 1812 in Jefferson, Ohio. Abner served as a witness at the signing of Jonas Lupion's will on 17 Mar 1814 in Jefferson, OH.

He may have been a member in the Hopewell MM on 17 Mar 1814 in Jefferson, Ohio. He was paid $2 by the Colerain Township (Belmont Co., OH) Trustee Board. on 2 Mar 1818. He appeared in the census in 1820 in Colerain Township, Belmont, Ohio.
They were granted a certificate to transfer from Short Creek MM to Plainfield MM (Belmont Co OH). on 24 Apr 1827 in Harrisville, Harrison, Ohio. They were received at the Stillwater MM from Short Creek MM on a certificate dated 24 Apr 1827. It was addressed to the Plainfield MM, but not received there.

Abner appeared in the census in 1830 in Saint Clairsville, Belmont, Ohio.

Abner was disowned for disunity by the Stillwater MM. Apparently he had joined the Hicksite Quakers on 23 Jan 1830 in Barnesville, Belmont, Ohio.

Abner signed his will on 9 Sep 1831 in Belmont County. Son Eli received $40 besides the 160 acres he had already received. Son Hugh received $100. John Wells received the 70 acres of the plantatation where he lived, paying $175. Richard received the plantation that he lived on, paying $175. John and Richard were charged with caring for their mother. Son Abner Wells received $75 in addition to the $130 he had already received. Son Job received $5 in addition to he had already received. Daughters Anna Wells and Deborah Parker received $200 each. John and Richard were appointed executors.

Abner signed a letter promising to pay his daughter Anna $200 on 31 Dec 1832 in Belmont, Ohio.

He died in Aug 1833 at the age of 70 in Belmont, Ohio and was buried in the Old Quaker Cemetery in Saint Clairsville, Belmont, Ohio. An obituary in either the Literary Cabinet or Olive Branch records the death of Abner Wells, Sr, of this township, in the 71st year of his age; and on the following day, the death of Deborah Wells, his consort, also in the 71st year of her age. It seems that the Literary Cabinet was, in about 1833, consolidated with the Olive Branch.

    His estate was probated on 6 Sep 1833 in Belmont, Ohio. Sons & executors John and Richard Wells paid off a mortgage ($1,100), dated 3 Jun 1833 (SE1/4 S19 T8 R 5 and SW1/4 S19 T8 R5 (50 acres) on 28 Dec 1833 in Belmont, Ohio.

Abner and Deborah had 8 known children:
    Eli Wells (1786-1850)
    Hugh Wells (1787- )
    John Wells (1790- )
    Anna Wells (1791- )
    Richard Wells (1794-1875)
