" John Wells, son of Gov. Thomas Wells of Wethersfield, was probably one of the original proprietors of Stratford, or sent there by his father to occupy the lands which he, the father, owned as one of the proprietors of the plantation, and he afterwards received considerable land in Stratford from his father. John Wells was made a freeman in 1645, perhaps in Stratford, but was here in 1650; was made an Assistant in 1656 and again in 1658 and 1659. He was a prominent man while he lived, but died in 1660, or in 1661, about the same time his father did, a comparatively young man, not far from thirty-five years of age."
  • Note: 1656; He was Rep. Gen. Crt., 1656 and 1657: Judge Probate Crt., 1658:Magistrate, 1658-59. Also Deputy (Stratford) to Conn. Leg., May andOct., 1656 and May and Oct., 1657: Assistant, 1658, 1659

Note: The Wells gives the order of births and dates of births of the sixchildren, as shown herein, with the exception of Sarah Wells, which hegives as Sept 28, 1659. However, the father's will is dated Aug. 7, 1650 and the court concerning these children fixes their ages about the sameas shown by Wells, with the exception of Sarah, who definitely is the'seond daughter' referred to, and this statement says that she is 'aboutone year old and half.' This should make her birth about Feb. 1657/58. Wells also show, in all, seven children including a third daughter, Mary, born 9/29/1661, which is a little over two years after the death of JohnWells, Sr. There were definitely only six children--four sons and twodaughters--in accordance with abstract of will of John Wells, Sr., and inaccordance with all other authorities found.

He was Deputy for Stratford in May and October of 1656 and 1657, Assistant of the Colony in May of 1658 and 1659, and served as judge of Probate. Probate of Estate: 19 October 1659 (Will dated 7 Aug 1659)

He landed with his father at Saybrook, then went to Hartford 1636 and to Stratford 1645; freeman at Hartford 20 Apr 1645, deputy from Stratford 1656, 1657 and 1659, magistrate 1658; married Elizabeth Bourne (who came to New England with Henry Tominson and Ellen, later wife of Arthur Bostwick) at Stratford; seven children, she survived him and remarried 19 Mar 1662/3 to John Wilcoxson / Wilcockson.9

"Jonathan Welles, the eighth child and fourth son of the Hon. Thomas Welles, of Glastonbury, Connecticut (a member of the Governor's Council from 1751 to 1761), and a nephew of the Rev. Samuel Welles (Yale 1707), was born in Glastonbury, August 9, 1732. His mother was Martha, daughter of the Hon. William and Elizabeth (Stanley) Pitkin, of East Hartford.
During the year 1753-54 he taught the Hopkins Grammar School in New Haven, and then for over a year until April 1756, he served as a Tutor in the College. He then settled on a farm in his native town, and married Catharine SALTONSTALL, a sister of his classmate, born in 1734. He was sent to the General Assembly as a representative in 1760, and to twenty-six subsequent sessions in the next twenty years. In 1770 he was made a captain in the militia, and in 1773 received a commission as Justice of the Peace. Meantime he was largely entrusted with other public business. About 1774 he became embarrassed in his affairs, and was obliged to petition the Assembly for protection from imprisonment for debt.
He died in Glastonbury, January 17, 1792, in his 60th year.
After the death of his first wife he married Mabel, widow of Jonathan Hills, and daughter of Jonathan and Mabel (Olmsted) Stanley, of East Hartford.
A son, Roswell Welles, was born in 1761, and was graduated at Yale in 1784."; Principal=Maj. Jonathan Pitkin Welles

A son, Roswell Welles, was born in 1761, and was graduated at Yale in 1784."; Witness=Col Thomas Rice Welles, Witness=Rev. Samuel Welles (2)
