    ~MY THOMPSON ANCESTOR~
In Pursuit of Paradise, p. 62
"In 1683 Mr. James Blakeman built a mill ("to grind ye town's corn")near Peck's Mill Pond in Stratford. Less than 3 years later, on Christmas Eve, 1686, Blakeman swapped the mill with Ambrose Thompson for a share in the new Woodbury plantation. The mill remained in the Thompson family for over 75 years until Ambrose's grandson Ebnezer sold it to Theophilus Nichols. The millers were important men in town, and the mills became informal forums for discussion of politics, weather & crops."

Probably in Stratford, Ambrose married SARAH WELLES, daughter of JOHN & ELIZABETH WELLES, my immigrant ancestors & prominent founders of Stratford. Ambrose & Sarah were the parents of 6 known children including my ancestor, SARAH THOMPSON, who married JOSEPH BIRDSEY on 10 Jun 1708 in Stratford and were the parents of REV. NATHAN BIRDSEYE, also buried in this cemetery.

The following information is taken from Katherine Wells’ genealogy published in 1912. Some of her information may be erroneous but most is accurate.

“Elizabeth Nichols Wells’ father, Capt. Nichols, as he was called, was a man of wealth and influence, who took a leading part in the affairs of the town and church. He and his son Phillip had a store and wharf on the Pequonnock River, from which place they carried on a thriving trade with the West Indies.”

“The Stratford records are filled with the various transactions of Capt. Nichols. In a quaint old deed he conveys to his son-in-law Hezekiah Wells, nineteen acres of land with a dwelling house and gristmill standing thereon. ‘In this ye 6th day of Jany in ye 3d year of ye reign of our Sovereign Lord George ye 3d of Great Britan &c. King Anno Dom. 1768.’ Another paper in which he deeds ten acres of land to his daughter ‘Bettee’, in consideration of ‘diverse good reasons me hereunto moving. Especially my parental love to my daughter.’”
