      FAMILY ARMORIALS

The parts of the ARMORIAL BEARINGS consist of:

There cannot be a Crest without a Shield of arms, because the Crest was a later addition to the Shield.

Not all Armorials, by the way, have a Crest or a Motto. These were significant in the representation of the individual's service and heraldry. Every element on an Armorial is symbolic for the individual or family. The "Devices" represent some quality, honor or memorial for the individual and or the family. In later periods, the Mantles of some family Crests became so ornately dressed, so as to conceal that they were originally part of the helmet. The helmet all but disappears in all the finery of some family Crests.

These are but representations of the families, and may or may not be correct. Therefore, until they have been documented as such, take them with a grain of salt. Just something to look at enjoy them, and wonder about the person or persons who may have earned them so long, long ago.
