"THE WHIFFENPOOF SONG"
[The Tables Down at Mory's]
~ Originally written for a branch of the Yale University Glee Club in 1909  ~

To the tables down at Mory's
To the place where Louie dwells,
to the dear old Temple Bar
we love so well,

Sing the Whiffenpoofs assembled
with their glasses raised on high,
and the magic of their singing
casts a spell.

Yes, the magic of their singing
of the songs we love so well,
"Shall I Wasting" and "Mavourneen"
and the rest.

We will serenade our Louie
while life and voice shall last.
Then we'll pass and be forgotten
with the rest.
(CHORUS)
We're poor little lambs
who have lost our way,
Baa, baa, baa.
We're little BLACK SHEEP
who have gone astray,
Baa, baa, baa,
Gentlemen songsters off on a spree,
doomed from here to eternity,
Lord have mercy on such as we...
Baa, baa, baa.

I learned this song as the "Whiffenpoof song", but it was also known by many people as "We're Poor Little LAMBS", and I thought it was a good song for this page.  My Grandparents, Eric Charles & Annie LAMB-HINDORFF loved this song very much. My mother sang it to me as a lullabye  and I have always loved it, too. A great song of lament for a lost love, as eluded to by the line, "Shall I Wasting" and "Mavourneen", two old IRISH songs about lost loves, fitting for drinking songs.

My LAMB and FILLMORE families in WISCONSIN & MINNESOTA

My LITTLE WHITE LAMB

Green are the pastures of sleepyland
Fresh are its fields and fair
Wide are its ways and it's wonderful
And my little LAMB is there
Oh tall dream shepherd. I pray you'll hear
Fair though your pastures be
Lay down your cares and bring once more
My little white LAMB to me
Blue are the skies over sleepyland
Clear are the brooks and bright
With the shepherd who dreamed to the slumber gate
With my little LAMB last night

GOODNIGHT LITTLE LAMB

It's night on the farm
And little LAMB sleeps
Crickets are chirping
Night grows so deep
Soon will be morning
Sleep while you can
Just close your eyes
And sleep little LAMB
