Notes for Vital RECHE:
NOTE:
Vital's birth is recognized as being in 1794 by all family sources, however he was actually baptized in 1797. It is possible that his baptism was merely delayed for some reason, but it was neither the usual practice of the time nor of his parents. The original register says born "yesterday". This leaves some doubt as to his actual birth.

SOURCE: by Lil Heselton compiled from information received from Rosamund Richey, Merry Bennett, Peggy Simons, and Tedd Mumper-Kawakami.

Vital was born 24 October, 1794, in Nicolet, Quebec, Canada. In 1801, he went for five years to Rev Charles Brassard's school in Nicolet and was a fellow student with Mgr. Provencher. Later he spent 5 years at college, then went to Quebec ( it isn't clear if this is a province or a city) to study architecture. About 1815, he returned to St.. Marie de la Beauce to be an architect. According to the Reche Canyon News, he designed and built several houses in this vicinity. He then went to Montreal where he met and married Francoise Helene Hantz of Porentruy, Switzerland on 15 November 1820.
The Best Man at the wedding was M. Charles de Lery and their Maid of Honor was Mlle. Emma de Montenach. Vital and Helene returned to St. Marie de la Beauce. It was in St.. Marie that Vital became friends with M. Taschereau, father of the man who would become Cardinal Taschereau. On the 10th of July, 1828 Vital received his first commission as Ensign in the Second Battalion of Dorchester. His commission bears the signature of George, Earl of Dalhousie. April 17, 1831 he received his second commission as an Ensign in the militia of County Beauce. This commission bears the signature of Lord Aylmer. A couple of years later, Vital was raised to the rank of Lieutenant under Lord Aylmer.
Vital and Helene lived in St.. Marie until 1834 or 1835. During this time they had Flora, Charles, Vital, Therese, Anthony and Eugenie. Concerned about the unrest of the time, and I would guess, his family's safety, as he was supporting the rebellion of William Lyon Mackenzie. Vital soon found himself with a price on his head, and fled to a safe-house near Portland, Maine. Unhappy with that place, he decided to move on, and in 1836, came to Rochester, NY., where he established another safe-house.

Rochester, New York, USA - 1836  He began a grocery business in a building on the site where Carroll, Beadle and Muldge were later located, and set up his practice as an architect. ("The Californians", Nov Dec 1989, page 42, claim he was assisted by William Lyon Mackenzie in these endeavors).  He ran this business until 1854. The newspaper articles seem to indicate that he lived at the home at 31 Howell Street, right at the corner of Howell and South Streets,  the many years he lived in Rochester. It was a large, fashionable, home which he designed and built himself.
It appears Vital's worries came to fruition in 1837-1838 Canada Rebellion. According to the Rochester Post Express, during this time he became known in Canada as "le Vileaux Patriote". Although he never left Rochester, it appears that his son Charles Reche (8-3), a tender 14, ran messages and carried papers for William Lyon Mackenzie. The paper claims that he opened his doors to all the oppressed. (An unproved family story states that Vital later gave Wm. L. Mackenzie rooms during his exile from Canada - possibly true).
A devout Catholic and confirmed Frenchman (the language primarily spoken in the home), Vital was one of the founders and supporters of the French Catholic Church on Pleasant Street.
In 1842, daughter Helene was born. In 1849, the siren voice of gold in California called his son, Vital Jr. (8-4). Vital (Jr.) secured passage to Panama on the "Pinkham". His ticket cast $500.00. In 1851, Vital Sr. followed his sons Vital and Anthony to California and the gold fields. He spent three years in California, working both as an architect and hunting gold. His success is unknown but in 1854, he came home to Rochester and established a business as a coal dealer*. The Reche Coal Company became the second largest coal dealership in Rochester. Its offices were located near the Byron Street Bridge. In 1867, when son Charles died, his daughters began working in the office. They worked there until Vital's retirement in 1882.

SEVERELY INJURED

Mr. Reche Run Over by a Runaway Horse Yesterday

Yesterday morning at half-past 10 o'clock as Dr. WHITE'S hostler was leading the doctor's horse hitched to a buggy from the barn to the office door, the animal suddenly shied and broke away from the hostler. Running through Lancaster and across Court street the buggy came in collision with a lamp-post on the corner of Court and Clinton streets, and was left there a total wreck. Continuing along the horse ran over F. RECHE, who happened to be walking along the sidewalk in front of Dr. WHITE'S house at the time. Mr. RECHE was violently thrown to the ground, and received severe injuries about the head and face. He was taken into Dr. WHITE'S office and his wounds dressed. Mr. RECHE is a coal dealer, and lives at number 18 Howard street. The horse was captured on East Main street.

In an interview on her 91st Birthday in "The Rochester Democrat", daughter Eugenie tells the following story.

"Among the distinguished persons whom they knew was Frederick Douglass. One day he came into the office of Mr. Reche and said, "Miss Reche, I am going home to write and to see no one but myself. I have $800.00. and I want you to take it and put it in the bank, and when I want it, I will let you know."  Miss Reche wanted to give him a receipt for the money, promising to do as he asked, but he wouldn't accept it. He went to his home in Mount Hope Avenue to work on an address he had agreed to make at the unveiling of the soldier's and sailor's monument"

Another family story from Aunt Elizabeth Richey (sic) claimed someone in the family took part in the Underground Railway. It appears that Vital's family were both with opportunity and purpose in this possibility - but there is only circumstance, not proof.
All the Rochester papers claim for the Reche's a descendancy from Louis XV of France. The family of Vital made several trips to France and regularly corresponded with members of the Rochambeau and Layfayette families. It is known that Vital's home was visited by the member of the Layfayette family who came to Baltimore in 1825. According to the Rochester Post, his cousin Phillipe Reche who died in 1893, in Maryland was on the committee for this event. Vital's daughters traveled with the Rochambeau's to Niagara Falls at the time of the dedication of the Rochambeau Monument. (Perhaps the 1881 Yorktown fete). At the 1881 Fete, he met Col. Lichtenstein, the representative on that occasion of President Grevy, who subsequently sent Mr. Reche his photograph, a high favor of French etiquette. In 1883, he took his daughters to France and they were royally entertained by Gen. Boulanger.
According to an obituary in The Rochester Herald, Vital was of "muscular physique and commanding appearance". The Post Express said of him (on his 91st birthday) "His form is still erect, his dark eyes retain their youthful fire, his complexion is fresh and despite the abundant silver locks ... he appears less than sixty years of age".
Vital died at 99 years, 6 months at 6 P.M. on April 24, 1894, as the bell on St.. Mary's Church tolled the Angelus. All city papers ran columns on his life and death.

Title: "Ninety First Birthday: Incidents in the remarkable life of Vital Reche":

Quote:
"There are few men in this city or in this country who at the age of 91 years, would contemplate a journey from Rochester to New York City for the purpose of witnessing the unveiling of the Bartholdi statue...but to Vital Reche (7-1), it was a commonplace occurrence. A Post Express reporter called at the residence of this estimable gentleman this morning and on enquiring for him, learned that he was enjoying his regular morning walk. His form is still erect, his dark eyes retain their youthful fire, his complexion is fresh and despite the abundant silver locks ... he appears less than sixty years of age...Mr. Reche was well known throughout Canada as  "le Vileaux Patriote" (the valiant patriot) .  During the rebellion of 1836-37 he proved himself a patriot indeed. He opened his doors to all the oppressed who sought safety, and his eldest boy, then scarcely 14, L.M. Reche (8-1), was often entrusted with secret papers to convey to Canada, at a great risk to his personal safety, but he successfully escaped detection. Mr. Reche and his family have always been prominently connected with all movements in the Catholic Church in this city. When they came to Rochester there were but few French Catholics, and but one Catholic Church in this city, the old St.. Patrick's, now the Cathedral. Mr. Reche was one of the founders of the French church on Pleasant Street, and to his efforts is largely due the success of the congregation. He has not lost interest in this direction, and last summer visited Montreal for the purpose of attending the reception of Cardinal Taschereau. The venerable man had seen the Cardinal baptized and was a personal friend of that gentleman's father and grandfather. While in Montreal Mr. Reche sustained a severe injury, returning from the reception of Cardinal Taschereau, he slipped on the tile floor and fell. He was assisted to his feet and walked to his room. He attended services in the evening in spite of the severe pain and was afterwards confined to bed. He is now fully recovered and only last week superintended the construction of two chimneys upon his home. This task involved the climbing of ladders to the top of the house several times...He takes great interest in all French Matters and five years ago received the French deputation at Niagara, on the occasion of the Yorktown fete..." -end

Death Claims Vital Reche: Rochester's Oldest Citizen Passes Peacefully Away

Quote:
"An eventful life ended; Mr. Reche was Ninety-nine Years and six months old and had lived in this city for fifty eight years- Sketch of an interesting Career.
Vital Reche, the oldest resident of Rochester and probably of Western New York, died at 6 o'clock last night at his residence , 34 Howell Street, aged 99 years, 6 months and one day. Mr. Reche had been seriously ill, but a comparatively short time, up to a few weeks ago having been able to move about with the celerity of one much younger in years. Of muscular physique and commanding appearance, his familiar form was often seen on the streets of our city during the pleasant days, the year round.
Since stricken by his last illness, Mr. Reche had been confined to bed almost continuously, but would not give up hope that he was going to live long enough to fulfill an earnest desire to round out a full one hundred years of life
It was not until yesterday morning that the illness which for several days had been threatening serious developments took a dangerous turn. Then he was attacked with what appeared to be an apoplectic stroke, after which he lost consciousness and failed rapidly, his death being momentarily expected.
As the bell on St. Mary's Church tolled the Angelus, Vital Reche (7-1) died. At the time of his death he was surrounded by his daughters,  Misses Flora (8-2), Teresa (8-5), Eugenia (8-7), and Helene Reche (8-8). He also leaves two sons, Vital C. Reche (8-4) of Fall Brook, Cal and Antoine C. Reche (8-6) of Reche, Cal., eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren."

Notes for Leon Matthew RECHE (8-1):
NOTE: I am not 100%convinced that this L.M. and the one who ran errands for William Lyon Mackenzie are the same- they may be. However, somewhere in this family is an LM Reche. I place him here because
1. He fits age wise ( The L.M. of the Post Express article who ran messages for William Lyon Mackenzie was 14 in 1836) An 1822 date is highly probable.
2. It is highly unlikely a good Catholic family like this would wait 3 years for a first child
3. L.M. (as referred to in the Post Express article) and Leon Matthew could be the same individual
I have no proof.

Leon M. Reche (8-1) came to Reche Canyon in 1883 and settled on land adjacent to his brother Anthony Reche (8-6). He was so taken with the Reche Canyon, that he sent for his childhood sweetheart to come to California. In 1886, she arrived by ship in San Francisco, just a few days before Leon's niece, Angenora Reche (9-7) was to marry J. Henry Maag, and she elected to stay on board over night. One of the fires that so plagued San Francisco swept the waterfront, and she perished in the terrible fire. Leon heard of her death and was devastated. When he didn't show up for Angenora's wedding, the family thought it was depression. A couple of days later his body was found. He had gone up the canyon and shot himself.  The family buried him there. There is a photo of Leon Reche in the Reche Canyon News. -(edited by t.a.d.2003)

Compilation, by L. H.:
In 1849,  Vital C. Reche (8-4) left Rochester, NY. for the California gold fields via Panama. He traveled on the "Pinkham" and his ticket cost him an outrageous $500.00. The trip took him about a year in all. Anthony Reche spent a week in Charges. He an seven others occupied a boat called a bongo which was poled by two natives. The passage across the isthmus took two days. Vital spent two and a half long months in Panama city. On Feb 2, 1850, Vital climbed aboard a ship lying at anchor off the shore. Captain Parkell collected $250.00 from each man he could find space for and the Niantic then set sail for San Francisco (by way of Hawaii, to catch the Japanese current). Captain Parkell took a fancy to the young Vital ( and his money?). When they reached San Francisco they went into partnership, beached the Niantic in the thick mud bank just off the corners of what is now Clay and Sansome Streets. They raised the bulwarks another eight feet, covered the ship with a shingled roof, partitioned off office and store space, added a wide veranda approached by a staircase, placed wood frame beds in the rooms below, erected a large sign proclaiming their property to be the Niantic Hotel and opened for business. They prospered. May 3, 1851, the Niantic was severely damaged by a fire, but they rebuilt and were open again in two months. Among their new tenants were John and Henry Magee from Angelica, NY. In August another fire struck and the Niantic was too severely damaged to rebuild. Vital took his share of the profits and left for Sacramento. There at a gold camp called Hawkins Bar on the Tuolumne River, Vital ran into the Magee Brothers again. They had done reasonably well and since Vital was returning to NY decided to send the money home with him. (and visit the Magee's sister whose tintype had intrigued him). In 1852, Vital was returning to New York on the "Winfield Scott" when it wrecked off Santa Barbara. He survived and went on to NY to marry Miss Amelia Magee. Vital's younger brother, Anthony accompanied the new couple back to San Jose, where they became the owners of the Reche Exchange Hotel 1854-59. Anthony spent the next six years wandering the gold fields and plying his trade as a millwright. He became an expert in water mills for both farmer and miner. In 1859, they sold the hotel and moved to Southern CA, settling at Temecula. There he ran a mercantile store built by a John Magee. In 1867, Vital and Amelia Reche returned to Watkins, NY.,  where they established a home. There he invested in the Fall Brook RR Enterprise (coincidentally also run by a Magee), and established a branch of Reche Coal Co. Two years later he was diagnosed with cancer in 1869, and returned to Pala (in California). Then he became enthralled by the uninhabited, but beautiful country west of Pala down the San Luis Rey River, and established a home there and began farming and a bee and honey industry. He named his home Fall Brook. He planted fruit trees, built dams on the Live Oak Creek, farmed alfalfa, strawberries and a large truck garden and established a guest home for tourists and hunters. The excellent honey soon became well known and to accommodate the tourists, Vital built two more houses, a tourist office, a post office, and grocery store, and a stage stop. A post office was established at his home. It was Fall Brook. The crop that made Reche's secluded ranch famous was honey. In 1870, Vital convinced Anthony and Menora to join him for a time, but by 1876, Anthony had moved to his Reche Canyon. About 1890, Anthony and Menora (Reche) moved back to Fallbrook to help the ailing Vital. Anthony continued to travel between the Canyon and Fallbrook. Vital lived 25 years after his doctors had pronounced his imminent demise, until his death on May 17, 1894.

"...McAlister's hunting companion on these hunting ventures was V. C. Reche, rancher of Reche Canyon in Loma Linda. Reche and his brother at an earlier time had engaged in market hunting quail in the same area. Reche stated that when the Sunset Route of the Southern Pacific Railway started in 1880, many young men in Southern California started hunting quail for the San Francisco market, but that nearly all the quail rotted in sacks before reaching San Francisco, so that the business proved unprofitable - returns did not pay the express charges and cost of the powder and shot. Reche stated that at one time by actual count he picked up 363 quail as a result of eleven pot shots from his old muzzle loader at the spring where we had found the V-shaped trough. This was an average of 33 birds to each shot...Hall McAlister's quail shooting adventures on the San Jacinto plains, recounted earlier in this paper, were in the company of Vital Reche. He with his brother Anthony were ranching in what is now Reche Canyon in Loma Linda. Anthony tried to start a town there that would bear the Reche family name, thinking it would be a gateway to Temecula and San Jacinto to the south with San Bernardino to the north where he had a store. In contrast, it was said of his brother, Vital Reche, known as the hunter, that he wanted only peace and quiet. McAlister described Vital as "a rancher who was one of the best shots, deer tracker and general all-around hunter to be found anywhere." On a hunt to the huge Santa Margarita Ranch near Oceanside, Reche states "our party of four hunters bagged 14 deer and could have killed double the number." While the town of Reche did not survive, the family name lives on in Reche Canyon." -end

"In 1860, in Tioga County in the state of Pennsylvania, a village named Fall Brook was begun, with stores, shops, boarding house, and more than 30 dwellings. It was a town created by the Fall brook Coal Company, owned by John Magee and his son, Duncan, residents of a neighboring county in New York State. The Magees had discovered coal on Fall Brook Creek, a Pennsylvania tributary of the Tioga River. They built the Fall Brook Railroad to connect with Corning and Watkins, New York, where coal was transported along the Erie Canal. Notes for Anthony Clarence RECHE (8-6):
Anthony was tall and slender. He was a carpenter and millwright by trade. In 1853 he came to San Jose by way of Panama with his brother Vital (8-4). He worked for a short time in the San Jose area at the Reche Exchange Hotel with his brother, Vital.  But this did not appeal to him and for the next six years Anthony traveled the streams and the hills. he found no gold but did earn money plying his trade as a millwright. He became an expert on the water mills for both farmer and miner. He enjoyed his solitary vagabond life but visited his brother frequently. In 1860 he moved to the Mariposa area and contracted to rebuild a grist mill at Visalia for Dr. Ruben Matthews. It seems the charm was Matthew's 16 year old step-daughter, Menora Cayton. Feb 22, 1861 they were married by County Judge CG Sayle at the home of AP Smith. After a honeymoon in the San Jose area, Anthony and Menora returned to her family and announced their plans to move south. Dr Matthews presented the couple with a team and wagon. They loaded up Menora's two trunks, some odd furniture, bedrolls, several jars of home canning, a quarter of dried deer meat and two barrels of water, hung a rifle and pistol near the seat and were off. After six days they reached Bakersfield and then went on across the desert to San Bernardino. They immediately opened "the first American store in that area" and Vital also plied his trade as a builder. As Anthony was somewhat of a dreamer, he spent many Sundays exploring the mountains and it is felt he found Reche's Canyon during these expeditions. He fell in love with the Humabba Canyon. In 1862, severe flooding wiped out his store, the mill, and much of the valley. He was contracted by the Mormons to rebuild the Lyman and Rich Grist Mill and worked there as a millwright until he finished the rebuilding. Around 1864, he moved to Temecula where he built a grist mill for Henry Magee on his wife Victoria de Pedrorena's vast rancho, and worked in the store with John Magee. (The Magee brothers had a falling out with each other and parted ways). Finally Anthony moved to Pala where he became the first non-Indian settler and started the villages first store. It was there that Vital (8-4) and Amelia visited him when they returned from NY. In 1870, Anthony and Menora moved to Fallbrook. Their son, Anthony C. Jr (9-13) was the first white child born in the community and their daughter, Flora (9-5) was the first white girl. But Anthony was by nature restless. In 1876, the family moved back to San Bernardino, to Humabba Canyon and homesteaded 160 acres. In late 1876, Fred T. Perris, surveyed and named the area Reche's Canyon.

According to a chapter entitled " Reche...The Road and the Canyon", from a history called Live Oak Park:

" Anthony (Reche) built a home for his growing family and started producing honey and raising sheep. But his ambitions went beyond sheep and bees, for the road thought the canyon was being used more and more by freighters hauling supplies south through San Jacinto and Temecula. Anthony envisioned a town in the Canyon. It would be a town of some importance, he thought,  for here were hot springs (The Two Sisters and One Brother Springs),  just waiting for health seekers, and the canyon's road was an important link in the awakening Southlands communications system - if unimproved dirt roads may be so designated.
In 1883, a United States Post office was established in the canyon to which the Post Office Department, at Anthony's request, gave the name "Vital C. Reche". In his application, Anthony Reche had requested Jacob Bergman as contractor to bring the mail from Colton to Reche. Probably that famous stagecoach driver and founder of the village of Aguanga was already carrying mail over the same route to San Jacinto and beyond. The new post office would only mean an additional stop to him. Now with a trading post, post office and ranch, Anthony applied for and was granted ample water rights in the canyon.
Having become securely established in Reche Canyon, Anthony's craving for change of scenery again asserted itself.  This time however, he did not abandon his newly founded town, but rather expanded his business interests. He again opened a store in Pala and established a bee yard there. Often, he visited Fallbrook where he helped his brother...
Fate however did not hold a bright future for the little town of Reche. In 1882, the California Southern Railroad built its tracks through Box Springs Canyon to Riverside, leaving Reche's Canyon over two ridges to the east, to bask in increasing solitude..."

Quote:
"A handful of families moved in near Barton Road, at the lower end of the Canyon, but in its upper parts lived only the Reche's. The isolation of the Canyon escaped the worst ravages of the droughts and his bees and sheep increased. He opened Reche Canyon to freight haulers and bought 160 acres adjoining his original acreage and another 160 on the Sunnymead side of the hills in Moreno Valley. Anthony, now prosperous, invited a cousin, Leon Matthew Reche (8-1), to manage part of the Ranch. Leon sent for his sweetheart.
In 1886, Los Angeles resident Jacob Maag was visiting friends in neighboring San Timoteo Canyon. He met Angenora (9-7) and courted her. Soon plans for a wedding in the Reche Post Office were being made. Shortly before their wedding, Leon received the tragic news that his sweetheart had died in a fire on board her ship in San Francisco. He became despondent and refused to attend the wedding. After the wedding the family discovered Leon was missing. Five days later, they found his body in the hills. They buried him close by.
In 1888, Vital C. Reche Post Office closed its doors. Anthony (8-6) and wife Menora stayed on until 1890, when they returned to Fallbrook. Anthony frequently rode up from Fallbrook to look after the bees and sheep he kept there. In 1898, on one bright spring day, May 27th, Anthony drove his buggy into his beloved Canyon, visited with the new settlers at the Two Sisters and One Brother Springs, and drove on into the canyon to a quiet place near his old ranch. He was found the next day by a sheep herder, slumped over in his wagon, dead of a heart attack at age 65. Two months (later), after Anthony was taken back to Fallbrook for burial, a savage brush fire swept through the canyon, destroying the ranch buildings and the last traces of Reche, California. The Fallbrook Enterprise paid him this tribute:
' The Fallbrook region owes its settlement and name to these two brothers, who, reinforced by H. C. Magee, first broke into this primeval wilderness, cleared farms, built roads and opened a way for subsequent settlers. Their names must always head Fallbrook's history.' "

Quote:
"It was like turning a page in Rochester's history, some of it linked with the history of the country, to talk yesterday afternoon with Miss Eugenie M Reche (8-7), who was 91 years old on Saturday. She lives at the family home of more than fifty years at 31 Howell street, with her sister Miss Helene Louise Reche, who is 80 years old. Although she has had both eyes operated on and stays closely at home, Miss Eugenie is cheerful and remarkably quick in witty comments. She and her sister are daughters of the late Vital Reche who lived to the age of 99. His mother signed a deed for the transfer of property when she was 103.
An interesting acquaintance that goes back over scores of years, but has not ended is the privilege of these women. They are descended in a direct line from Louis XV, of France, and members of the Rochambleau and Lafayette families are still among their correspondents. When the Rochambleau monument was unveiled, and a member of the celebrated family came from France as the guest of the united states government, he stopped in Rochester to call at the Reche home. The aged women went as far as Niagara Falls with him when he left.
They have interesting letters. Both last year and this year they have received wedding invitations from old titled families of France, sent from both the bride and bridegrooms families, as it is the custom there among people of rank. Communications of this kind and works of literature are outward signs of the life they have lived. Miss Eugenie has been abroad three times. As she sits in her living room she recalls scenes and events that have not lost their power to interest.
When their father, once a prominent merchant of this city, conducted a coal business, a son was associated with him. In his last illness the younger man asked his sister, Eugenie, to take his place in the office. She did so until the father retired in 1883. Among the distinguished persons whom they knew was Frederick Douglass. One day he came into the office of Mr. Reche and said, " Miss Reche, I am going home to write and to see no one but myself. I have $800.00. and I want you to take it and put it in the bank, and when I want it, I will let you know." Miss Reche wanted to give him a receipt for the money, promising to do as he asked, but he wouldn't accept it. He went to his home in Mount Hope Avenue to work on an address he had agreed to make at the unveiling of the soldier's and sailor's monument.
Susan B and Mark S Anthony were among the Misses Reche's friends of another generation. For twenty-six years the Misses Reche were active in the Rochester Shakespeare Society. Their home came to be regarded as almost the headquarters of the society. Having studied dramatic reading, Miss Helene Reche frequently cast the parts for the meetings. Miss Eugenie is a graduate of the Lucille Tracey Seminary, which stood on the site of the Homeopathic Hospital.
Had it not been for Miss Eugenie's eyes, the younger sister said that they would have gone abroad this year. The sisters often traveled when their father was living, and still are eager to make journeys.
"I want three more trips to Europe before I die", said Miss Helene. "I wouldn't leave my sister this year." -end

Miss Helene refused to submit to the operation for removal of cataract while her sister lived. One month ago she submitted and today her physician says it was a complete success.
Both sisters were afflicted with cataracts. Neither would have the operation because each feared the other's sight might not return. Now alone as far as family is concerned, to grieve or rejoice, the last one sees her garden and may renew her acquaintance with the literature she loves.

Quote:
"...Live Oak Creek, where the Park is now a popular playground, was the first site, and the pioneers were the Reche family from Pennsylvania (correction: they were from Rochester, New York -t.a.d 2003). They were looking for a small valley, with trees and sufficient water, where they could start farming and raising bees. The Reche family moved from the east to the Santa Clara Valley in central California, soon after the gold rush days, then moved to Pala for a short time before settling in Fallbrook. Their original home had been Fallbrook or Fall Brook Pennsylvania, and with some of the family living in NY state and some in the South. (Lil's note - not true, they were from Rochester, NY - their only association with Fall Brook, PA was Vital's investment with Fall Brook PA. Railroad & coal his purchased for the Reche Coal company in Rochester, NY. This does not eliminate the probability that he named the area for Fall Brook, PA, however - t.a.d. 2003)
In 1869, the Vital Reche's and their children, Charles, Amelia and Abbie, became the first settled family in the community, Charles had been born in northern California in 1854, and it was he who carried on the family ranch. About 1899, he married Mrs. Edith MacWalter, who had arrived in Fallbrook in 1883, with her daughter, following the death of her husband.
The portrait of Mrs. MacWalter-Reche hangs in the old schoolhouse that is now the Reche Club on Live Oak Park Road. Her daughter, Mary became Mrs. Magee, and the mother of Jack Magee, now custodian of the family history.
Vital's brother, Anthony, did not stay to establish his own household for many years. From the original ranch he took up new farming property to the north, which he sold to the Zeiglers', and in turn it became the home of the MacWalters and was inherited by Mary MacWalter Magee. Vital and Anthony died of Cancer at a relatively early age.
The original family ranch of 160 acres extended just beyond the present (Live Oak Park) park, to the south; to the west side of present the Reche Club property in that direction, to Los Alisos Drive on the north, and to Via Vista on the East.
In addition to farming and honey production, the ranch was operated as a resort or hotel. and was the site of the first post office, grocery store, and stage headquarters. Honey was a specialty of the menu for the tourists, travellers (sic) or hunters and later was shipped in considerable quantity to Southern California markets. Other ranchers joined in producing honey, principally the sage variety.
At one time there were three houses on the ranch, all the homes of Reche's, including one in which travellers (sic) were housed. The lower slopes of today's Lynch, Wood, and Morales properties were surveyed for a town site. This legal act had to be vacated before Mrs. Reche could sell the property.
Charles Reche had one daughter Amelia, who was a public health nurse and never married. She was killed in a car accident in 1932...
Mrs. Charles Reche, formerly MacWalter, was a widow because her husband made a shopping trip to San Diego, where he stayed at a new hotel. The plaster was still wet in his room; he developed pneumonia and died. Mrs MacWalter was 41 when she married Charles Reche and he was 45."

The first settlers in the area were the Reche Brothers. Vital settled in 1869, and Anthony and his family came a year later, each homesteading adjoining 160-acre parcels, in the area of today's Live Oak Park (but known back then as Reche's Grove ). The beautiful secluded, six-mile valley, with a year-round running brook, had a picturesque fall that tumbled over the rocks into a deep pool below. Vital Reche having once lived in Fall Brook, Pennsylvania (*See "Comment" below) chose this appropriate name for his ranch. Soon the entire valley, with its many large and beautiful Live Oak Trees, was called Fall Brook. Other families soon came to settle in the area, creating the fast growing need for a school.

On July 7, 1875, the San Diego County School District from portions of Monserrate, Mt. Fairview, and San Luis Rey Districts formed a Common School. Mrs. Reche had been teaching the children in her home and continued through 1877. By 1880, there were 25 families in the Fall Brook area, all living within 3 miles of the school, including the LAMB children. The school building was located on Vital Reche's property, in Reche's Grove, where he also had a "Reche's Store" & "Reche's Retreat", a motel-like set-up comprised mostly of log cabins to accommodate visitors. This first school was named "Reche Grove School". From the early trustee records, it has been discovered that the community also held functions at the school, such as the local debating meetings, the literary society, and revival church meetings. The school was thus the community center. From the records it appears that the school was an existing older building. Mr. J.G. Martin's Teacher's Report of June 25, 1882, describes it as being "...sixteen feet by eighteen feet, no ceiling, ventilation extra good - house going to pieces."

On March 20, 1886, the residents of the Reche Grove School District voted for a Bond Issue of $800.00 to build a schoolhouse. There were eight votes, all in favor. On July 28th, Vital Reche offered one acre of land to the School District Trustees and their successors in office. This site was located one-quarter mile north of his store in Reche Grove, along the Creek Road. The offer was accepted, with a reversion clause, "Should the property cease to be used for school purposes, the title would return to the Reche family". The dimensions of the new school house measured twenty-four by twenty-eight feet. The first classes started in the fall of 1886 with twenty to twenty-five students.

In 1893 the Board changed the school from a primary/secondary school, into a graded school, with the term to be extended from the 6 to 7 month term to nine months. Sometimes they had a different teacher for each session. In the spring of 1896 Miss Williams opened school with nineteen pupils.

On March 4th of that year, the school house burned. Charles Reche discovered the fire at 4:45 a.m. Apparently some hot coals from the wood stove were emptied out of the stove, but not removed from the building, and during the night ignited the floor. It was a total loss. Luckily the school was insured. In the meantime, classes were held at the Vigneron home located across the creek from the school area. All the children went to this temporary school until the new Fall Brook school building was ready in the spring of 1897.

The Story of Charlie Reche and the Grizzly Bear Hunt - as related by Mrs. M. N. Ray

Charlie was getting tired of the Grizzly invading his chicken pen. He decided to build a platform in a tall tree, to be safe, but also to be far enough away that the bear would not easily detect him.   He chose a tree in the canyon of Fallbrook Creek (now the location of Live Oak Park, on the easement of Gird road), where he could see the path that the bear used to come into the neighborhood.  The platform was not too comfortable, but he sure wanted to kill that bear.
I’m sure it took several nights of waiting, but his patience paid off.  The Grizzly came along, expecting to get another supper of fine fresh chicken.  To his surprise, there was a shot, and then another, and another.  He fell to the ground mortally wounded.  Only when Charlie was sure that the bear was dead did he descend from that safe spot.
As the story goes, he was never again visited by a hungry Grizzly Bear.

"We have no date for this story, except that my mother (Annie Lamb-Hindorff) said she used to look at that platform in the tree, up very high in the tree, and wondered how it would be to climb up there."  -Margaret relates that her mother used to see it when she was walking to school (The Fall Brook School "Reche school").  Annie Lamb-Hindorff started school in l902, and the platform was there in the tree at that time, so we know the Grizzly Bear incident happened before that.  The tree was (is?) located on the west side of Gird Road, across from Margaret's home.  She has a photo taken of the tree in about 1963, "but there was no sign of the platform at that time."

She was born in 1859, at Temecula, CA.  Amelia married Joseph George (aka J.G.) MARTIN.

Children of Amelia RECHE (9-2) and Joseph George (aka J.G.) MARTIN:

10-7 - Helene MARTIN, b. Aft. 1890

Notes for Amelia RECHE (9-2):
The two sources below- both secondary sort of disagree- I tend to believe that Amelia married J.G. the dates agree with the tentative birth date I had for Amelia. Arthur- the schoolteacher is likely the son of Amelia and J G. (Martin). I would guess that Mrs. Amelia RECHE-MARTIN died with her children as listed- add to the dish Flora and Gus and Helene after 1892, and Arthur's, son Reche Martin.

...Amelia Reche (9-2) was a younger sister of Charles. She taught in West Fallbrook and married Arthur Martin (incorrect - marr. J.G. Martin. Arthur Martin was her son - t.a.d.2003), who is reported to have built and taught in the first school. The original building burned down and was replaced by the red structure that now houses the Reche Club. (See Early Fall Brook Schools). Children in the early classes used to find square iron nails from the first building, many mortar and pestle sets, and an occasional arrowhead from earlier Indian occupation...
Mrs. Amelia Reche-Martin
and her children, Emilie, Flora, and Gus, and her Grandson, Reche Martin (11-1), all died of food poisoning from eating canned apricots. Arthur Martin missed the poison as he was teaching in Temecula, and daughter Helene was not in Fallbrook. She later died of Cancer.

Quote:
"I tried to picture what it might have been like to go shopping in Fallbrook in those days. Using the 1892 map the directory lists and old newspapers...From the Directory I chose J.G. Martin 47, whose homestead of 240 acres was out on Alvarado Street. His wife Emilia (Amelia Reche 9-2), 33 was the daughter of Fallbrook pioneer Vital Reche (8-4). She was born in Temecula before the Civil War and had come with her family to the Fallbrook district in 1875. The Martin children were Arthur(9) and Emily(7)...
A word about the Martin family, which I selected to be the hypothetical Fallbrook shoppers. In 1882, Joseph George (J.G.) Martin, who was a teacher as well as a rancher, became owner of 240 acres in Fallbrook district by using the U.S. Homestead Law. A year earlier, he had married Emilia (Amelia Reche 9-2), a daughter of pioneer, Vital Reche. In 1892, when he was 47 and she was 33, their children were Arthur, 9, and Emily, 7, and in the years after 1892, they had two more children. Son, Arthur grew up in Fallbrook, married, and had several children, including a son named Reche. Arthur later owned a successful drygoods store in Fallbrook named Ridgley and Martin. (After many moves, the building which housed his business still exists. It is now called Heritage Hall, and is located on West Beech Street, part of the Heritage Square complex.).  Daughter Emily (Miss MARTIN) grew up, became a teacher like her father, and taught at the Fallbrook Grammar School.
The reason there is more information about them than the usual Fallbrook family is that in 1915, five members of the family died of food poisoning. Mrs. Emilia (Amelia) Reche Martin, her daughters, Emily and Florence, son George, and grandson, Reche, all died after eating home-canned apricots. Newspaper coverage was extensive and provided much background information. " -end

"...My Great Grandmother was Eugenia Reche, (married name Eugenia Reche Roberti). We always called her Nana and we always had great fun with her spending weekends putting jigsaw puzzles together when I was a boy. She died, I think, in 1966 or 67 when I was about 8.. She's buried at Inglewood cemetery. Eugenia was the 9th of Anthony's 10 children, who included Charlie Reche, one of the members of the posse that hunted down Willie Boy. She was raised on the Reche Ranch in Reche Canyon located in Colton. We don't know if she was born in Fallbrook or Colton. Eugenia had just one child, Velma Roberti (married name Velma Potter), who is my grandmother. She's still living as is now 92. Velma had two children, Judith Ann Potter (my mother) and Fred Potter (my uncle)."

My mother married Zane Weston de Arakal and together they had three children: myself (Byron LeRoy), my brother, (Brandon Paul) and my sister (Corinne JoAnne). I married Julene Marie Jachacz (Polish descent), and we have four children: Lee Weston, Daniel Anthony, Jeana Lousie and Melanie Marie.

1. One child: Velma Roberti Potter.
2. I know that Eugenia and F. Roberti at some point moved to Los Angeles. That's because my Gran Velma was born there and went to Manual Arts High School.
3. Eugenia died in Sierra Madre, California. She spent the last years of her life living with Velma and her husband/my grandfather (Lee Potter) in the Hastings Ranch area of Sierra Madre. She died of a stroke, again, I think in either 1966 or 1967. I believe she was 86...".
4. Eugenia is buried along side her husband (F. Roberti) at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood California.
I'm also going to try to put together some remembrances of have of Eugenia, keeping in mind that they're all from my childhood. She passed away when I was 7 or 8. But I do remember her, vividly, always sitting at a wooden card table...snow white hair...and a handmade afghan quilt over her legs...always working on her beloved jigsaw puzzles. And I also remember that she had a wicked sense of humor. I do recall too, that she had a fancy for Scotch and water in a high-ball glass.

SOURCE: Title: "Willie BOY: A Desert Manhunt by Harry Lawton";  Malki Museum Press. 1960

Quote:
"Charlie Reche (9-12) was shot and injured by Willy Boy, a young Paiute Indian who he was trailing in a posse. Willy Boy had shot and killed Mike Boniface, a Chemehuevi Indian working on the Gilman Ranch. He then kidnapped Mike's daughter Lolita eventually killing her as well. A huge manhunt was raised. Charlie Reche was foreman for the Desert Queen Mine and deputy volunteer Sheriff at 29 Palms. He became part of the manhunt. The "posse" met at the ranch of Charlie's father-in -law, Chuck Warren in Morongo Canyon. Charlie was sent with other to stake out the the well at Coyote Hole. The next day they found Willie Boy's tracks on the Yucca Valley road. Charlie thought that Willie Boy was making for The Pipes. he was proved right when they reached the Pipes and found supplies stolen and a warm campfire. The Sheriff was reluctant to carry on but Charlie insisted on following on and was given permission to go on. The next day they found the girl Lolita's body. A bullet wound in the back. They had to take the body back. They made a quick turn around and were back on the trail. The next afternoon they found fresh tracks. Moments later Reche was shot from his horse as was another of the trackers. Charlie lay in the open all day while the posse traded shots with Willie Boy. Late in the afternoon, Charlie sent one of the Trackers back for help. As they were tying Charlie on to his horse for the ride home a single shot rang out. Reche was eventually taken back for care. He was very ill and always walked with a limp afterwards.
Later they would discover that Willie Boy had killed himself with that last single shot."

Title: "Reche on First Visit in 44 Years"

Quote:
"While visiting Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Arnett recently, Charles Reche (9-12) of Banning, made a tour of once familiar haunts. He came here in 1895, but has not been back since 1906. Charley pointed out a dugout on a hill at the oasis, which he averred was the first residence in Twenty-nine Palms, having been the home of Johnny Wilson. The big fig tree at the east end of the oasis is over 55 years old, he said, for it was but a small tree when he first saw it.
Reche drilled the well known Reche well, north of Morongo. During the trip, he pointed out the place where the renegade Indian Willie Boy, threw his gun in a pond, after he shot Reche in the hip in the Pipes country. Accompanying him were his wife Nellie, and Mrs. Lila Warren Arnett of Yuciapia, who was born at Morongo, and formerly resided here."

"Anthony Clarence Reche Junior (9-13). . .He is a native and to the manner born, his birth having occurred June 24, 1873 on a farm not far from the one he now occupies...But three years old when the family removed to San Bernardino, Anthony Reche Jr obtained a practical education in the common schools of that town, and subsequently was, for two years, track walker for the Southern Pacific Railroad Company. Removing then to Fallbrook, where he has the distinction of being the first child born of white parents in the place, he worked by the month until 1901. Starting then as a rancher on his own account, he is now, in partnership with his brother, carrying on general farming with exceptionally satisfactory results, having seven hundred acres of land on the St. Margaret Ranch (sic - Santa Margarita Ranch). Progressive and enterprising, he has proved himself a thorough master of his calling, and as a young man of integrity and honor is fully entitled to the high position which he holds in the estimation of the community. In 1903, Mr. Reche married Mamie Freeman, a daughter of Jonas Freeman. . .and they have one child, a daughter named Julia Catherine. Fraternally, Mr. Reche is a member of the Fallbrook Lodge No 339 of the I.O.O.F." -end

Title: "MAY MATTOLA CELEBRATES HER 99 YEARS AT PARTY TODAY."

Quote:
"Celebrating her birthday has become old hat to Margaret Mattola. It ought to be. She's been doing it for 99 years. Today May as she is called by her friends , will celebrate her birthday at Denny's with cake, ice cream and coffee and lots of friends and relatives. "I'm sure even some of the employees who are off will show up" says her stepson David Bertot...May had led a varied and interesting life. She was born at her grandmother's house in San Bernardino, the daughter of native Californians. Work started early for May. She began doing dress alterations for many of the larger department stores when she was only 17. Being the only girl with three brothers, May was the one responsible for caring for her parents when they were older. One of May's brothers, Leo Maag, is a furniture worker and caner in Leona Valley. (He is a youngster at only 96). When the family first moved to the valley in 1938, May remembers they raised rabbits on a small farm where Pearblossom Highway and Sierra Highway meet. But the springs around there went dry and the family stopped raising rabbits. "The rabbit men would come once a week and get 30 or 40 rabbits at a time. We usually had about 400 rabbits"...Dave and May have lived together since 1945 and the arrangement has worked for both of them...." -end

Note on back of photo of Merry Gay, in her own handwriting. Sent to Lil. 1989

- "Last picture taken of me in Jan 1987. A month later I was in the hospital for 8 days and discovered I had extreme state of osteoporosis of my spine. It looks like a sponge. The prognosis would be in wheelchair within 6 months to a year. My husband of 38 years took a powder and moved to mainland. Now I am in a wheelchair, but of a sporty kind. It's a Little Rascal Electric Mobility Scooter. Even tho I am alone I have many friends who keep a close eye on me and I have a good sense of humor and thank heavens, no self pity." -end

April 3, 1989 letter to Lil from Merry Gay
"You will never know the joy and happiness you brought with your letter and all the information...You have gotten me back to do the completing of the records...perhaps you will be able to assist me with the Canadian ones...on Dec 7 1988,  I fell and fractured my pelvis and broke the little bone known as the neck of the femur bone that fits into the hip socket. It won't heal because I have advanced osteoporosis, so I's in an electric mobile unit called a Little Rascal. I'm in business of developing land, I buy property and have houses built and then sell them. This keeps me active and productive and I love it."- end

Letter to Lil from Merry dated Sept 27, 1989
"...My husband and I travelled (sic) in our travel trailer all over the United States starting in Nov of 1981and continuing til April of 1985. We wintered in Lakeland  Florida. In summer of 82 we stayed about 6 weeks outside of Rochester, NY. I made several trips into Rochester to the historical society. to verify some of the information I had. One of the ladies there copied it and then took me to the Cornhill District where the pioneer homes were. She got the key and we went through two of the homes that Vital Reche built. We couldn't find his home...when they put the freeway in they used that for an off ramp. In the summer of 84 we were in Indiana and went to Canada through Detroit. We took a tour of Toronto and went over to Montreal and toured it and had planned to go up to Quebec and Nicolet...but all of a sudden my husband threw a tantrum because he said the people were too unfriendly...we went to Bangor ME to search out records for my Grandmother's father. All record before 1834 had been destroyed....In Boston we went to Plymouth Rock and ..the lady looked up and found the name Warren who came over on the Mayflower and that down his lineage there was a son who settled in Bangor Maine...By June of 1985 we came over here to the Big Island of Hawaii. This is where my son lives. We had planned to stay a year but my husband said lets stay another year which delighted me. In early Jan of 1986 I had surgery for removal of the last cataract on my eye... In early September I called my mother about (doing the LDS temple work on her family) and told her how close I felt to them. She asked me if when she died would I do the work for her...I got to teasing her and got her laughing. That was on Saturday and she died quickly the following Tuesday. When my brother called to notify me, he was so grateful because I had made her feel so cheerful on Sat and she had been despondent before."- end

Special Notes for MERRY GAY:
From the Records of Lil Heselton -

Merry lived in Hilo, Hawaii. I corresponded with her for about three or four years ( it appears that I kept the early letters but not the later ones or hopefully they are simply in someone else's file and then she "disappeared". She had Osteoporosis and was moving about on a scooter. The last correspondence from her was written by a nursemaid. Merry was anxious to complete her genealogy but unable to do the research so I forwarded all the "proof" to her and she submitted it to the Ancestral file with both our names on it. I don't think she was ever able to do all the Temple work. Merry was LDS. She died 25 Jan., 1998 in Hilo, HI.
