Lula Caroline Blaylock McClendon

Lula and Commie McClendonLula was one of the middle children of Bob and Polly Blaylock.  She was born on January 17, 1883, probably in Pine Springs, Lamar County, Alabama. 

At the age of 17, she married Commie Chrischel McClendon, the son of Isaac M. and Mary Elizabeth Watson McClendon.  He was a few years older than her, born on March 20, 1880.  They were married in Aberdeen, Monroe County, Mississippi on December 23, 1900. 

Commie was a farmer and had lived out in Texas and Mississippi for a while, but came back and married Lula.  They had a couple of sons that either died at birth or died very young, but all their other children reached an adult age and had children of their own.  When the 1930 census came through, they recorded the family like this:

Lula passed away on September 13, 1954, in Lamar County and was buried in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.  Commie lived about seven more years, but he passed away on April 15, 1961, and was buried next to Lula in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.

Clark Robert McClendon (died young)
     Clark Robert died young, on May 23, 1906, and was probably buried in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.

Harley Lee McClendon (died young)
     Harley Lee also died young, on July 9, 1908. 

Jim Franklin "Frank" McClendon (md. Etna Hall)
     Jim was born on January 12, 1902.  He married Etna, who was born on July 8, 1902, and they had four children together.  He passed away in Sulligent in December of 1973, but Etna lived until November 8, 1988. 

Mary Mae McClendon (md. William Albert Williams)
     Mary Mae was born on May 23, 1903, and on Christmas Eve, 1925, married William.  He was born on April 10, 1898.  They had twelve children together and continued to live in Lamar County.  Mary passed away on March 21, 1974, and was buried in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, where William was buried when he died on November 27, 1984.  Many of their descedants still live in and around the area.

Annie Glo McClendon (md. Gurley Lee Wilson)
     Annie Glo was born on April 18, 1909, while the family was living in Arkansas.  She married Gurley Lee Wilson, the son of William H. "Billy" Wilson and Willie Irene "Dolly" Cantrell Wilson.  He was born on June 7, 1909, in Marion County.  Together they had six children, but Gurley Lee died relatively young, on September 7, 1955.  He was buried in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, where Annie Glo was also buried when she passed away from a heart attack on July 29, 1976.

Evie Lee "Els" McClendon (md. William Elvis "Bill" Gunter)
     Els was born on September 30, 1910, in Alabama.  She married Bill Gunter, who was born on December 13, 1887, and a fair bit older than her, and together they had four children.  She was a housewife and also worked at a garment plant.  Bill was a farmer, and passed away in 1964.  He and Els were buried in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery; Els passed away in September of 1982. 

Della Ree McClendon (md. Floyd Ernest Cunningham)
     Della was born on May 14, 1912, in Lamar County.  Floyd was born April 23, 1907.  They had two daughters together.  Floyd passed away on November 8, 1984, in Gattman.  Della passed away on October 28, 2002, in Vernon.  Both were buried in the Sulligent City Cemetery.

Thomas Jackson "Tommie" McClendon (md. Elmer Ozella Pitts)
     Tommie was born on May 19, 1914, in Lamar County.  Ozella was born September 18, 1917, in Fayette County, Alabama, the daughter of Jessie Pitts and Mertie Lucas.  They had eight children together.  Tommie was a farmer and a mechanic, and Ozella stayed at home and did some work at a manufacturing plant.  Tommie passed away on July 10, 1988, and Ozella died on May 6, 2002.  They were both buried in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.

Daisy Reen McClendon (md. Murray Jackson)
     Daisy was born on July 24, 1917, out in Texas.  She and Murray had four children together.  She passed away in Hamilton, Marion County, Alabama, on December 15, 1994. 

Azilee McClendon (md. Hubert Roberts)
     Azilee was born on July 18, 1921, in Alabama.  Hubert was born on May 13, 1914.  They had four girls together, and the family moved up north to Tazewell County, Illinois.  Hubert died in May of 1980 and Azilee in September of 1985, both in Pekin, Illinois. 
Magdaline McClendon (md. Wages Hollis)
     Magdaline was born on August 25, 1925, in Alabama, and Wages was born on October 31, 1920.  They had four children together and lived near Sulligent.  Wages passed away in January of 1973, and Magdaline died on July 11, 1997.
