Grover Cleveland Evans
Grover Cleveland Evans

Cleve was the youngest son of Hiram Noah Evans and Julia D. Tooten Evans, born on November 15, 1884, in Lee County, Mississippi.  His father passed away when he was five years old and he was raised by his mother, who never remarried, and with help by his other extended family nearby.

When Cleve was 25 years old, he was mentioned in the local paper as a witness at a trial:

Cleve Evans is a witness in a murder trial. He testified that Albert Brown shot and killed Alonzo Addison.

The next year, he married on January 31, 1911, in Pontotoc County, Mississippi, a girl from the Union Community named Betty A. Dodson.  She was the daughter of Charles A. Dodson and Julia Ann Edwards Dodson, and she was born on October 21, 1887.

Mr. Cleveland Evans, of Plantersville, was in town Friday.

Cleve was not from a wealthy family, but it's interesting to see that he was mentioned in the paper as a relatively young man.  He was a farmer for most of his life.  Though Cleve and Betty never had any children of their own, they adopted and raised James Donald Evans as their son.  Cleve lived a relatively long life, and passed away at the age of 72, on September 15, 1957.  The Tupelo Daily Journal carried this obituary:

Child of Grover Cleveland Evans and Betty Dodson Evans

James Donald Evans (md. Zella Larue Culver and Betty Jean Payne)
James was related to Cleve somehow, he might have been a nephew, but he was adopted and raised by Cleve and Betty as their own child.  He was born on April 3, 1928 and married Zella on March 25, 1949, in Lee County.  They were divorced later that year and did not have any children.  He later married Betty Jean Payne, daughter of Levi Thomas Payne and Mary Elizabeth Price Payne.  She was about three years younger than him.  They had a number of children together.  He was an antique collector and a member of the Mississippi National Guard.  He passed away on July 6, 1985, in Tupelo and was buried the next day in the Union Cemetery.  Betty Jean passed away on November 20, 2001.  She was also buried at the Union Cemetery.
