Mary
Jane Irvin was born in the middle of the Civil War, on January 29, 1864,
in Monroe County, Mississippi. She was one of the middle children
out of twelve and she grew up in the western part of the county, surely
making numerous trips to visit relatives near Sulligent and Fulton.
When she was 27 years old, her older sister, Sidney Alice Irvin, married
James Jackson DePriest, from the nearby community of the same name.
They had two children, but Sidney died in 1895, just a few years after
they married, at the young age of 36. About a year and a half later,
James married Mary Jane, in April of 1897. In the year 1900, the
census found them living with Mary Jane's sister, Emma Irvin DePriest,
who had married James' brother, Joseph! It recorded the brother/brother
- sister/sister household thus:

and Mary Jane)
They continued to live in the same community and raised their children
there. Three more children would be born to James, and Mary Jane
raised her children along with those of James' earlier marriage.
But one of those from the previous one, Sinclair, died in 1906 at a young
age. In 1921, James passed away at the age of 68, but Mary Jane lived
quite a long time after that. She passed away at the age of 94, in
1958. She and James and Sydney are all buried at the Blair Cemetery
in Monroe County.
