Pinkney Webb
Pinkney Argi Webb

Pinkney Argi Webb, better known as just "Pink," was the fifth child of James E. Webb and Cybell Bounds Webb.  He was born in 1854 in Lamar County, Alabama, shortly after his parents moved there from just across the state line in Itawamba County, Mississippi.  He spent his childhood experiencing the hardships of the Civil War, which broke out when he was seven and during which he probably moved to another part of the country.

His father, James, had fought for the Union forces, taking up arms against his own brothers, and probably because of that reason, they could not remain in the area after the war ended.  At the age of about ten Pinkney, along with the rest of his family, moved north and settled in Jackson County, Illinois.

He grew up in DeSoto, Jackson County, and it was there on May 24, 1875, that Pinkney, at the age of 21, married Sarah Jane Nausley.  She was a couple of years younger than him, and from the nearby town of Elkville.

We have not found him for certain in 1880, but this census entry sure looks like him:

1876 Illinois Farmhouse Is this our Pinkney?  Well, James E. Webb's son named Pinkney is listed on both the 1860 and 1870 census, in Alabama and in Jackson County, Illinois.  The descendants of Pink Webb, from DeSoto, Jackson County, Illinois, know that his middle name was Argi also, and that he had a brother named Joseph.  They also know that their Pink's wife was named Sarah Jane Nausley.  All this seems to perfectly confirm that the Pinkney Webb who is James E. Webb's son is definitely the Pink Argi Webb, whose descendants live in and around that area still today.

So Argy, age 24, and his wife, Sarah J., age 23, all seem to match up well.  But to have his parents born in PA and to have a daughter Lucy that none of Pink's descendants knew of, all seems to point in the wrong direction.  If this isn't our Pinkney Argi Webb, the coincidences seem far too great though.  We can't find ours in 1880, and this one is in DeSoto with the right age and wife; he is also named Argy!; AND this Argy Webb is on the exact same page as our Pink Webb's sister, Nellie Webb Rogers, and her husband John Rogers.  Maybe Pink was just pulling the census taker's leg, or maybe he didn't want folks to know his father was from a place where people still held serious grudges against 'the recent unpleasantness'.  Whether this Argy Webb is our Pinkney Argi Webb is not absolutely certain, but we do know more about our Pinkney's children.

Pink and Sarah Jane had their first child that the rest of the family knew about, Jesse Argi Webb, a full decade after they married: on March 11, 1885.  They had a son named George whose birthdate is unknown (maybe he was the oldest?) also.  A daughter named Elnora was born on April 30, 1889, and a daughter named Della Elizabeth was born in 1891.

Pink Webb must have died as a relatively young man.  His descendants don't remember much at all about him, just that his wife Sarah Jane remarried after he died to a man named Will Holt.  She passed away about 1943, though the place is unknown.

If anyone knows anything else about Pinkney or his family, please let me know!

Children of Pinkney Argi Webb

Jesse Argi Webb (md. Myrtle Edith York)
Jesse and Myrtle had four children of their own.  She passed away in 1956, at the age of 60, and was burried in Belleville, in St. Clair County, Illinois.  Jesse lived until 1962, when hepassed away at the age of 77.  They had children that stayed in the same area, moved to Indiana, and moved to Texas also.

George Webb (md. Rosie)
George and Rosie had  at least three children.  They lived around Murphysboro in Jackson County, and some of their children did also.  We have not been in contact with any of their descendants yet.

Elnora "Nora" Webb (md. Thomas Carter Sills, Sr.)
Nora was born in 1889 and lived to the grand old age of 96 before she passed away in 1986.  Thomas lived to be 81 himself and the couple are both buried in DeSoto.  They had a number of children, including two sets of twins, though their first set died shortly after they were born.  Four of their children lived to be adults who had children of their own, and two more lived long lives without having children.

Della Elizabeth Webb (md. Walter Hood)
Della moved a little north, to Perry County, Illinois.  She and Walter, who was a coal miner and carpenter, had five girls, all of whom lived to adulthood and all of whom had children of their own.  Ella and Walter are both buried in the DeSoto Cemetery.
