Henry Arthur Sandlin Family

Henry was the first of the thirteen children born to Horace Benton Sandlin and Narcissa Jane Irvin.  He was born on October 18, 1880, probably in Monroe County, Mississippi.  When he was fairly small, his parents moved to Sebastian County, Arkansas, not far from the Oklahoma border.  He had such a large number of younger brothers and sisters that he had to help out a lot while he was growing up.

Henry Arthur Sandlin When he was 22, on May 27, 1902, he married Sarah Angeline Davis, who was five years his junior.  She was born in Texas on September 15, 1885.  Henry was a farmer.  About 1920 he moved his family across the border and into Oklahoma and it was after he moved to Oklahoma that he got a job as a deputy sheriff.  In 1928, when Henry's father Benton died, Henry and Sarah were again back in Hartford, Arkansas.  Janie, his mother, traveled from Stigler and moved in with them, living there until she died.

The Great Depression hit the family very hard.  They were fairly well off before the Depression, but during it, like so many other families, he lost almost everything he had.  The situation in the family was very unhappy during these hard times and it was a little after that when they divorced.  Henry lived with his son John for a while after that.  We also know from a note in his Bible that Henry "Began work for Sam Blaylock, February 3, 1941."  This was probably in Oklahoma.  It appears that he lived out the rest of his life in Oklahoma, never remarrying.

A note in the front of his Bible by an unknown person (it might have been his son John) says:

Children of Henry Arthur Sandlin and Sarah Angeline Davis

Quincy Quinton Sandlin (md. Sarah Hunt)
Quincy was born on June 26, 1904 in Arkansas.  He married Sarah, born July 25, 1907 and together they had three daughters.  Sarah and Quincy are both buried at the Moore City Cemetery in Cleveland County, Oklahoma.  She passed away on August 29, 1974, at the age of 67, and he passed away on July 4, 1983, at the age of 79.

Irvin Arthur Sandlin (md. Willie White and Eula Mae Mitchell)
Irvin was born on May 26, 1906.  He married Willie, who was born about 1912, on October 26, 1930, in LeFlore County, Oklahoma.  He later married Eula Mae Mitchell.  He passed away on February 22, 1968 and was buried at the National Cemetery in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma.  He did not have any children.  I have been told that he was murdered, but do not know anything else.

William Benton Sandlin (md. Willie, Ollie, and Lula Hulsey)
William Benton was born on June 14, 1908.  He had one daughter by his first wife, but none by his other two as far as I know.  He passed away on November 1, 1963, and was buried in the Moore City Cemetery, Cleveland County, Oklahoma.

Raymond Tillman Sandlin (md. Ms. Laughlin, and Allie)
Raymon was born on November 30, 1910, in Hartford, Arkansas.  He had no children by his first marriage, but one daughter by his second one.  While he was still young, at age 41, on May 9, 1952, he drowned after accidently falling into the water from a boat while frog hunting.  He was at Lake Porter, Bolivar County, Mississippi.  He was buried in the Shelby Cemetery there at Shelby, Bolivar County.

Lettie Mae Sandlin (md. Kirby Honeycutt)
Lettie Mae, the first daughter in the family, was born on July 15, 1913, Hartford, Sebastian County, Arkansas.  She married at the age of 16, on November 20, 1929, to Kirby Honeycutt, from Oklahoma.  She and Kirby had a large family!  They had 18 children together!  Their children and grandchildren might be one of the biggest of all the Webb families!  And all but one reached an adult age.  Kirby passed away on May 13, 1974, at the age of 68, their youngest child was only eight years old, and Lettie raised the younger children by herself with the help of the older ones.  After she was widowed, she lived with one of the younger, unmarried children for a number of years.  She passed away on May 12, 1998, at the age of 84, in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas.

Horace Davis Sandlin (md. Sybil L. Brooks)
Horace was born on September 8, 1916.  He married Sybil, who was three years his younger, in October of 1936.  When she passed away in 1992, she was buried in the National Cemetery in Fort Smith, Arkansas.  Together they had one son.

John Salis Sandlin (md. Jean Williams)
John was born on December 29, 1919.  He married Jean, who was three and a half years his younger, in Holdenville, Oklahoma on September 2, 1940.  They had three children together, after they moved to Bakersfield, California.  Jean passed away out there on February 4, 1995, and John did also on March 8, 2000, at 80 years of age.
