A letter written by Dr. Oliver Prescott Sept. 26, 1776 to General James Warren.  Dr. Prescott was at this time a Brigadier General. The letter is preserved among the Shattuck Manuscripts of the New England Historic, Genealogical Society.

Groton Sept'r 26th 1776

"Sir
In persuance of your orders Rec'd the 14th I have caused the militia of the County of Middlesex to be mustered and have caused to be Drafted therefrom every fifth able bodied man under fifty years of age etc agreeable to the Resolves of the Gen'l Assembly of this State of the 12th instant, and formed the sd men into Companies and appointed their Respective Officers in the following manner, viz.

             Charlestown     7 men    1st Lt.
              Malden             9 men    2d Lt.
             Medford          13 men
               Total               62 men
 
No.2.   Watertown     15 men    Capt. Edward Fuller of Newton

             Waltham         13 men    2d Lt. Isaac Hager of Waltham
              Weston           18 men

I have also formed the aforesaid Companies into one Regiment and  appointed:

Eleazer Brooks Esq of Lincoln to be the Colonel
Micah Stone Esq of Framingham to be the Lt. Colonel
Eben'r Bancroft Esq of Dunstable to be Major
Mr. Moses Adams of Framingham Chaplain
Mr. Joseph Hunt of Acton Surgeon Mate
Daniel Loring of Sudbury Adjutant
Samuel Hartwell of Lincoln Quartermaster
 
I have directed the said Col. Brooks to order the several Captains aforesaid to march their respective companies, as soon as possible,  in the best & most proper Road, to Horse Neck [West Greenwich, Connecticut], according to the Resolves of the Gen'l Assembly of this State & agreeable to the Directions and for the purposes therein Expressed.

Col. Brooks informs me this day that he hath given marching orders for Saturday next for the whole Regiment.

N.B. Colonel Thatcher & Colonel Fox engaged to fill up their Companies and Return the names of the Lieutenants before the Time appointed to march."
