The sole purpose of this "Lund Genealogy" project is to keep future generations informed so that they can be proud of the heritage! Preserving the past is best done by sharing the past, not leaving it in the hands of a few.
So far, 12 generations starting with Per Olsen b.1635 have been verified using legal documents and parish records. Scandinavians were very good at keeping records, making it rather easy for ancestors to be located. The Bygdebok (parish book) is the starting point; the aim of the bygdebok is to cover every family in a particular kommune (parish). The bygdebok can be compared to Centennial books often published in America. Both books lists people in the community and their families. From there, the original parish records are searchable for free at the digitalarkivet website, further verifying the newly found information. These parish records include birth, baptism, confirmation, marriage, emigration, and death.
In Norway, the females usually kept their maiden names when marrying. Naming children was done as follows: 1st son named after paternal grandfather, 1st daughter after paternal grandmother, 2nd son after maternal grandfather, 2nd daughter after maternal grandmother. Peder and Per were used interchangeably. Stillborns and young deaths sometimes were not recorded in the parish books, hence some confusion with the naming system. Also, if a child died, the next child of the same gender usually got named after the deceased. Same with a deceased relative often a child would be named after them. Giving children the fathers first name (patronymic) as part of the surname stopped (in this line, anyway) after 1858 with the birth of Oluf A. Nilsen of Aaslund. Families were known by their farm, so Oluf A. Nilsen OF Aaslund (farm). However, if they moved, they would then assume the new farm name.
