Hockley Guestbook (Archive)
In February 2012 HTML Gear Guestbook announced its retirement, and as of April 2, 2012 it was longer available, and the guestbook files were deleted. I had not been to the guestbook account for many months, so unfortunately, missed the announcement and the deadline for retrieving files from our Hockley account. Below are the messages I had already Archived.

Wonderful site. My great grandmother was Rebecca Hannah Hockley (born 1855 in Hatfield, Essex, England). She died in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia in 2-28-1919. She married Joseph Newman (my great grandfather). Her father was Jabez Hockley and her mother was Sarah Ann Evans . Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have no Hockley connection, but my family came from Dunton and my dad was actually born in Rose Cottage in 1910 and other members lived in adjoining cottage and others along the lane.

Very interesting site. I hope to find out more about my Hockley/Pymar ancestors by looking in. My great-grandmother was Hannah Hockley, born 1864 and my great-grandfather was George Benjamin Pymar, born 1861. They lived in Sudbury, Suffolk. I know that Hannah moved to London(Tottenham) sometime after 1901, and lived with one of her daughters. She travelled to North America at some point, with the idea of living with her son George Sydney Pymar, who had changed his name to Hockley. However, she did return to England and continued to live at Tottenham, where she was a much loved grandma to my mother Lily. I think she died in the late 1920's or early 1930's.

I married a Hockley whose ancestor is a WILLIAM HOCKLEY who had a son named PAUL HOCKLEY who married Elsie Isobel McMillan. All these people lived in New Zealand. Paul and Elsie had Eric, Margaret and Peter Hockley. Eric and Betty his wife had my father-in-law Russell Graham Hockley who in turn had my husband (ex-Husband)Russell Erika Hockley who married me, and we have Russell Edward Joseph Ngatauerua Hockley, Aaron Isaac Hoani Hockley, and Karena Jerome Graham Hockley plus Joshua and Jordan Hockley from the second marriage.
What an awesome feeling to tap in the name and come up with this site. So can anyone out there shed any light on the Hockley family here in New Zealand. I know there arn't very many of them but I'm sure my children would appreciate any assistance.

My great great uncle Thomas Ruse married Mary Elizabeth Hockley in the Saffron Walden district in about 1844. She died in 1846 and is buried in Saffron Walden Cemetry.I also have a letter written by Radley Hockley from Syracuse New York State to his sister Martha Hockley in Wickambrooke Suffolk England in 1837. A long and most interesting letter.Any information about Mary Elizabeth Hockley would be most welcome.

Good afternoon...My grandfather was a cousin of William Brewster Hockley who is on your site. William left Vancouver, British Columbia not long after his wedding to Annie and settled in Los Angeles, California where he started a real estate company, "Hockley Realty". I wrote to him in the mid seventies - just before he died - to try and discover why my grandfather changed his last name to Hockley when he came to Canada with his cousin, William B. Hockley. My grandfather's real name was George Sydney Pymar...some dark family secret cloaks the reason for the change of name, which the last surviving daughter of George will not disclose or even entertain discussing. I even commissioned an investigation into the alleged death of my great, grandfather - who my grandfather was named after - and no death certificate can be found. I have been given information about my real Pymar family relations, but it ends with the mystery around my great grandfather. If anyone is searching for some Hockley family history concerning William Brewster Hockley, I have some information that I can pass on to them.

My mother and I (Shirley Hockley) have been try to discern our family tree for quite some time. We can trace our heritage to Jacob Hockley in Harrisburg Pennsylvania in the mid 1800's. The trail runs cold there. It picks back up in Philadelphia a hundred years earlier with Richard Hockley and his son General George Washington Hockley. If anyone could fill in some blanks or has any infrmation on Pennsylvania or Maryland Hockley's I would really appreciate it.

Subject: George W. Hockley
When I was in Corpus Christs, Texas, I went to see his tombstone in an old cemetery there. It was erected by the State. He was Gen. Sam Houston's right hand man with the rank of Inspector-General in the Texas Forces. He has quite a history as anyone can find in Texas, having a county and a city (now called Levelland) named for him. In all the literature that I read about him there was no mention of his parents. He was from Philadelphia but lived in Galveston. There was also a question on whether his middle name was really "Washington". On the "Muster Rolls of the Texas Revolution"-published by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas- he was listed in the San Jacinto List as George W. Hockley. "The Handbook of Texas" by the Texas State Historical Association. Vol. 1, pg. 820 gives a good rundown on George W. but alas not his parentage. I'm sure the newspapers of Galveston and Corpus Christi would have reported his death in Corpus Christi on June 6, 1854 (buried in Old Bayshore Cemetery in Corpus Christi). He apparently died while visiting an old friend in Corpus (Henry L. Kinney). Hope this will be of some help. Says his birth was 1802.
By the way, I have a note from many years ago that there was a Col. Thomas Hockley who lived in Chester Co., Pennsylvania. Might be an interesting tidbit to follow up.

Hockley County, Texas, was named after George Washington Hockley in 1876. To learn more about G. W. Hockley visit the following website:

To answer your question as to which Hockley family group G.W. belongs . . . I do not believe anyone has followed that linage back to the UK!

My father (Edward Ernest HOCKLEY born 1909 died 1975 living in Surrey) used to tell us that his forbears, whether or not on the Hockley side I know not, were descended from Hugenot refugees from France. Have you heard of any such connections? - I would be interested to know.

Sad news for us Hockley researchers. I heard today the Mick Peck, one of the early researchers, died in July. He was a lovely man and did so much to help me sort out our line as well as going and taking photos for me. I understand from Mabs, his wife, that their daughter will be carrying on her fathers research so all his work will not be in vain.
