Hogan Family of Minnesota

The James Henry Hogan Family

of

Winona County, Minnesota

I have been working on the Hogan Family Tree since 1971, after the birth of my first child. As I was entering information in the family tree section of his baby book, I wondered whom the ancestors of my husband were and where they were from. I began asking his mother, Margaret Hogan. That was the beginning of a on-going search on the Hogan family tree. I wanted to pass down to my children and grandchildren, a history of their ancestors. I have researched and documented facts, found "cousins" that I did not know, tromped through old cemetries and court house records, and have gained a wealth of friendships that stretch over thousands of miles, and yes, even to Ireland.

I even found out that the famed Sugar Loaf Mountain in Winona, Minnesota was once owned by the Bohn/Hogan family.

I would love to hear from you if you "think" you may be related. I have been trying to fill in the gaps on the various branches on our tree. Please email me at [email protected] with the subject line reading "Hogan family".

Surnames linked to HOGAN are: Bohn, Mullen, Knepprath, Laak, Roberson, Heinz, Hanen, Purdon, Hanley, Emerson, Morehead, McDaniel, plus many others. If you are researching the HOGAN family or any of the other surnames, please contact me:

James Henry Hogan immigrated from Ireland with his parents about 1820. He applied for the Declaration of Intention for citizenship from the Municipal Court of the City of Brooklyn in the State of New York on the 6th day of April, 1839. In March 29, 1843 he became a citizen of the United States, living in Bristol, County of Hartford, Connecticut.

I have never been able to find out whom his parents were. I did find a listing on the ship Franklin from England, arriving in the port of Baltimore in 31 December 1820, of a female, S. Hogan (28 yrs); male, J. Hogan (8 yrs); and a male, T. Hogan (5 yrs). I have not been able to confirm that this is our J. Hogan, although I have not found any other J. Hogan arriving in port as a child. This information would be in line with his obituary, but where is his father? Could he have arrived earlier in the year?

James Henry married Catherine McDaniel about 1840. Catherine was born about March 1819 and died April 6, 1901 at their home on Homer Ridge, Minnesota. She is not listed in the death index for Winona County, but found his obituary in the newspaper, The Winona Republican and Herald, Monday, April 8, 1901. It states: "Mrs. Katherine Hogan died at her home in Homer, Saturday evening, at the age of 81 years. The funeral was held from the inte residence this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment was made in St. Mary's cemetery, where services were also held."

In the 1850 census, he was listed as married to Catherine McDaniel, living in Bristol, Connecticut with four children; Mary, 8 years; Rosannah, 4 years; James, age 2 years; and Thomas, 1 year. Also living in the same household were Ann McDaniel (born in Ireland), 15 years, and John Dagherty (sp?) a laborer born in Ireland), 35 years. James and Catherine are listed as being born in Ireland. They were probably married about 1840, possibly in Gettysburg, PA, although I have not researched for their marriage license/certificate.

James Henry Hogan moved west with his family and settled in Homer, Winona County, Minnesota in 1856. He was a farmer and his farm was on Homer Ridge. His descendants have moved on to North Dakota, Oregon, Montana, Wisconsin, Washington, California, Kansas, plus other states.

Obituary Notice

James Henry Hogan

Taken from the Winona Daily Republican newspaper, Winona, Minnesota, Wednesday, October 25, 1911

James Henry Hogan was born about March 4, 1809 in Ballymore, Ireland. He lived to be 102 years old. The service at the cemetery was conducted by Rev. Father P.J. Gallagher with a requiem mass for the dead celebrated at the pro-cathedral in Winona. He is buried at St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona, although he has no stone.

The newspaper stated that "he crossed the ocean from Ireland and came to America when eleven years of age, settling with his parents at Brooklyn, New York, and afterwards removed with them to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. At the age of twenty, he and Miss Catherine McDaniel were united in marriage and went to Connecticut, where they made their home for sixteen years. Then they went to Iowa. Since 1856, he and his wife resided in Winona County up to their death, that of Mrs. Hogan having occurred about ten years ago, their home alternating between Pickwick and Homer town. There were thirteen children, but only three survive, these being Mrs. Anna Nunn of St. Paul; Thomas Hogan of North Dakota; and James Hogan Jr. of Homer Ridge, were Mr. Hogan made his home for some years prior to his death. For the past twenty-three years, Mr. Hogan had been crippled by rheumatism, and in his later years he had become somewhat childish, but otherwise enjoyed good health."

OBITUARY

Hogan - James H. Hogan, 102 years old, who died at the home of his son, James Hogan, Jr., Homer Ridge, as was announced in The Independent yesterday, was born in Ireland, and came to America at the age of eleven. He made his home in this country since 1856. Three children survive. They are: Mrs. Anna Nunn of St. Paul, Thomas Hogan of South Dakota and James Hogan Jr. of Homer Ridge. The remains will be brought to St. Mary's cemetery this morning where the services will be conducted by Rev. Fr. P.J. Gallagher. Tomorrow morning requiem mass will be celebrated in honor of the dead at the pro-cathedral.

James Henry Hogan is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona, MN along with his wife, Catherine McDaniel Hogan, in the Irish section of the cemetery. There are no stones for them but they are buried next to a Thomas H. Hogan of Co. West Meath Ireland, died 11-1875, aged 50 years and a Thomas E. Hogan, died in May of 1887 at 26 years of age. The inscription on his large stone says, "Sleep brother dear and take your rest, God called you home He thought it best." I do not know who this Thomas H. or Thomas E. Hogan was and as of yet have not researched them. Perhaps James Hogan Jr. thought he did not have funds for a headstone for his mother and father, although I don't think that was the case. I don't know why he or the other children didn't have a stone for them.
