Rosanah E. Hogan was born September 18, 1844 in New York (according to census records). In 1850 she lived with parents in Connecticut. In 1860 census, Winona County, MN, she is 16 years old and living as a servant in the Rolla Baasks family. Many families had their children working at other farms and living there to earn money and/or so there would be food for them.

She married John Hanley in January 10, 1861 in Homer, Minnesota. John Hanley (born in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, November 25, 1836) came to Minnesota with his parents, Thomas and Mary Hanley, in 1855. He was a farmer and then a soldier/veteran. John enlisted in Company D, 7th Minnesota Infantry (enlisted as a Private on 15 August 1862 at the age of 27) and served his country honestly and faithfully during his three years' enlistment. He was first engaged in quelling the great Indian outbreak in 1862 and afterward went south where he participated in the battles of Nashville, Tupelo, Mobile and all other engagements in which his regiment fought. (Taken from the History of Winona County Minnesota 1883). He mustered out on 16 August 1865 in Fort Snelling, MN.

John Hanley had a brother named Thomas (born about 1831) that was a private in the same Minnesota Infantry. His unit was called Ireland. Thomas was discharged in 1854 and was killed by lightning August 1877 in Homer, Minnesota.

Their union brought 7 children into the family:

2. William "Willie" Norman Hanley, born June 1, 1867

3. John Eddie Hanley, born November 16, 1870. Buried in St. Mary's Cemetery 1895.

4. Thomas Eugene Hanley, born October 15, 1874, died 1937, married Zoe Suzanna Hannah Berry

5. Joseph Earnest Hanley, born August 5, 1876; died 1895 and buried St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona, MN

6. Mable Rose Hanley, born January 11, 1879, died January 3, 1905

7. Gertrude M. Hanley, born 1882

Rosanah died August 14, 1907, and John on May 28, 1922 in Winona, Minnesota. Both John and Rosanah are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona, MN.
