Extracts from The History of Honley by Mary Jagger, 1914

The Methodist Independent Church or Congregational Chapel.

The first dissenting chapel to be built in Honley was Moorbottom which was dedicated on July 31st, 1797. It had a burial ground attached. The minister's house was built on Cuckoo Lane. This chapel was closed on March 6th, 1910. Its location was at the corner opposite the new chapel built to replace it. The replacement was a grander affair and the first stone was laid on April 30th, 1910 it is a Congregational Church built in the Gothic sytle with a spire of some 85 feet, there is seating for 417 people with another 63 in the gallery.

The Wesleyan's

Built in 1806 by the Wesleyan's this chapel had seating for 250 people and had a burial ground, it was eventually replaced with a bigger chapel in 1824 the old one converted into cottages and the burial ground closed. The single cottage on the corner (which has a small plaque reminding us of it's former use) still contains fragments of some headstones but no other records exist; the current owner says that a ghost of an old woman who is only visible above the knees has been seen in the area.

The Primitive Methodists

The Primitive Methodists first met in rented rooms in Oldfield Buildings (which had previously been used by the Methodist New Connection) but eventually built a chapel in Southgate or Far End Lane as it was then called in 1842, this also had a burial ground. The chapel was pulled down and the gravestones removed sometime after 1948 (I was baptised in this chapel in 1948), no record of the monumental inscriptions exist.

Wood Royd Chapel

The Methodist New Connection (formed in 1797) chapel was dedicated on September 23rd, 1840 and had a burial ground. The chapel is now a private house that retains much of it's original outside appearance.

Berry Croft Chapel.

Built around 1856 by Jonathan Roebuck of Thirstin and known as Jonathan's Chapel he was a fervent member of the Methodist New Connection, it eventually closed in 1887 due to lack of worshipper's.

Reformer's Chapel.

Used by the United Methodist Free Church, known as the Reformer's, was located in Oldfield Building's previously used by two other Methodist groups, it was closed in 1900 and subsequently used to teach wood carving to those from the National School.

Chapel Inscriptions

I have not indexed these as there are so few, some of the inscriptions reflect the strength of Methodism at the time.

Woodroyd Chapel Inscriptions

Few stones now remain for this former Methodist New Connection Chapel which was formed in 1797, the chapel which was dedicated on September 23rd 1840 is now a private house and I am very grateful to the current owner for permission to copy these stones.

Through vain the stored win and poets lay
We morn memory when genious died away
We feel our loss of intellectual worth
We know a glorious lighted hand left the earth
His voice is in our ears
His form we see fleeting before us
We believe and in the past bright morrow
As they rise his noble virtues we more dearly prize
What though the solman bell from day to day
Proclaim aloud that fellow worms decay
When gifted to mind to death cold hand
All nature morns a universal friend

Moorbottom Chapel Inscriptions

Methodist Independent Church or Congregational Chapel.

The cemetery is across the road from the chapel, alongside what is now the Scout Hut, few stones remain and some wish those that do be removed. These stones are laid flat and are of a size and weight that must have required 6 or 8 people to lift them .
