A Paine in the Family

A Pain(e) in the Family

Every genealogist knows that there are many ups and downs in family research.  Since I became a self-appointed family historian, my research has been no different.  Many times I have hit that proverbial brick wall, and tumbled backwards to my starting point.  Other times a break thru seems imminent and then there's another brick wall.  That is the point I am at with the Paine family.

From the oldest of three family bibles belonging to my Watson family, I knew that Thomas L. or C. Pain married my great, great, grand aunt Miranda Watson, the daughter of John Watson, who migrated from York Co., South Carolina to Hardin County, Tennessee.  I also knew Miranda was born February 21, 1810, and that the date of Thomas and Miranda’s marriage was November 13, 1834.  For years I’ve looked at the names of John and Martha Watson’s children, and wondered what had happened to all of them.  Gradually, piece by piece, the siblings came to life through research.  What happened to Miranda Watson Paine remained a mystery.

A few years back, I discovered that my great, great, great grandparents on my mother’s side of the tree were Romulus Sanders and Sarah Salina Paine Swift.  A fleeting thought crossed my mind that Sarah Salina Paine might be related to Miranda’s husband, Thomas Pain, but as I had no further information on the family of Sarah Salina Paine Swift, and I was dealing with two different counties, I dismissed the theory.

A short time ago, a “distant” cousin I had never heard from, Bill Littrell, emailed me after finding John Watson’s bible records on the Hardin County, Tennessee website.  He was researching a Miranda Watson who had married a Thomas C. Paine.  I told him about my website, “The Road to Hooker’s Bend,” on RootsWeb, and that he had a lot of reading to do.

That weekend I received a phone call from this newly found cousin.  During our lengthy conversation, he mentioned some documents he had.  He read the documents to me listing siblings of Thomas Paine.  Violet "Lettie" Paine, Osmon Paine, Nancy Ann Paine, “Sarah Salina Paine.”  It was at this point my heart stopped beating.  When I finally recovered I told him “Sarah Salina Paine was my great, great, great grandmother.”  The same documents also verified through the names of Miranda’s siblings, that this was indeed my Miranda Watson Paine.  Although I knew much of what the documents contained, it was still a special moment to read those names and know that not only had I found the family of my great, great grand aunt, I also had stumbled across the family of my great, great grandmother.

Included among the documents was an application to the Eastern Cherokees filed in February 1907 by Matilda K. Tidwell, the daughter of Thomas C. and Miranda Watson Paine.   In the application she states her great grandfather was William Paine, her grandfather was Thomas Paine, and her father was Thomas C. Paine.  Matilda claimed her father to be of Cherokee parentage thru her father.  Matilda died November 03, 1907 with the application still pending.  In March 1908, Matilda’s husband, William Tidwell, wrote a letter to Guion Miller in Washington, D. C. in an attempt to provide more proof of his wife’s claim.  Mr. Tidwell states that it was understood among neighbors that Thomas C. Paine was a Cherokee Indian.

Stories handed down by Salina’s descendants told that she had been a missionary to the Indians, and how she would gather children around her and sing to them Indian songs.  A sworn statement, made by Mr. Tidwell in June 1908, identifies both father and son, Thomas Paine, as Methodist preachers, who preached among the Indians in Hardin County, Tennessee.  Various references are made to neighbors and acquaintances that were well acquainted with the Paine family and thought them to be of Indian descent.  The affidavit states that the Paine’s were also recognized as white people.  But since the Indian heritage could not be proven, and none of this Paine family was listed on a previous Indian Role, the application was eventually denied.

Miranda Watson Paine died in 1841 so she was never listed by name on a census.  The 1850 census of Giles County, Tennessee lists Thomas C. Paine with wife Cynthia, daughter Matilda C. Paine, son Lewis J. Paine, and daughter Ann M.  There is a William S.  Paine, age 14, listed in the household of Joab Williamson of Giles County.   Thomas C. Pain and Cynthia are also listed in the 1860 Giles County census but household member's names have changed slightly..

Many Paine/Payne researchers believe William Paine, who was born in Spotsylvania County, VA, and died in Burke County, North Carolina, to be the father of our Sarah Salina Paine and Thomas Paine.  It will still take some time to figure out the complete Paine family.  The jury is still out on the Indian ancestry as well.  If indeed the research of other Payne/Paine researchers is correct, the Indian ancestry is not true.  But always in the back of my mind there will be questions.  It was not "in" to be of Native American descent at that time.  Why would the family hand down stories of Indian ancestry if they were not true?  Could the family have falsely filed these papers expecting monetary gain, and if so, how on earth did they ever think they could prove Indian ancestry if there was none? Maybe the Paine family became so engrossed in living, learning, and loving the Cherokee ways, that they felt they were truly a part of the Cherokee Nation?  I’ll go with this idea until someone proves it wrong.

For now we'll start with Thomas Paine, father of Thomas C. Paine and list his descendants.
