This Hoopfer web site is a work in progress. It traces the family line beginning in Huron County, Ontario, Canada with Sebastian William Hupfer/Hoopfer and his family who arrived from Germany in 1855. Albert Lawrence Hupfer/Hoopfer, who was born in Huron County in 1860. William Sebastian Benjamin Savery Hoopfer, who was born in N. Dakota in 1885.
A tremendous amount of information, including photo’s, has been collected over the past few months and a project I thought might take possibly two months is now looking more like two years, (and maybe more). I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people, Hoopfer’s and otherwise, who have taken the time to contact me and share their information and without whose help this history simply would not exist. Note: Most folks familiar with my branch of the Hupfer/Hoopfer family will know that it began in Canada when Sebastian (Sebastin) Hupfer arrived from Germany in 1855 and settled in Howick township, Huron County, Ontario, Canada, near the village of Wroxeter which is about a one and a half hour drive north of where I live in London, Ontario. I was able to visit Wroxeter, and the cemetery, and took many pictures which I will post in the future. I was also able to visit with Jeff Hawkins, local Wroxeter historian, for several hours, and will be receiving more material from him in the next few weeks on the Robert Hupfer family. I was also able to visit the original farm site and take several photos from the roadside. Lastly, I spent a very pleasant but short period of time with the last living person in the Wroxeter area with the Hoopfer bloodline who is the grand-daughter of Robert Hupfer, the only member of the family to settle permanently in the Wroxeter area.
While there are no longer any other Hupfers/Hoopfers in the area, it appears they were a strong presence in the early days of Huron County. It gives me pause to wonder that my great-grandfather, Albert Lawrence Hoopfer was born in Huron County from where he left for N. Dakota and later on to Alberta. I, in turn, was born in Alberta and came to Ontario some years ago, almost, (unknowingly), to my great-grandfather’s doorstep.
Note: I often
wondered how the original Hupfer name came to be spelled as Hoopfer. It appears
that in the German language the “u” in Hupfer was accompanied by two dots above
it which indicated that the “u” was pronounced as “oo” (double “o”). The
pronunciation then has always been the same: “ Hoopfer” is simply the phonetic
English translation of the German “Hupfer”.
