William Horton II-1576.html
William Horton II , Gentleman, was
born in 1576 of Bradford, Yorkshire. and died 1657. William married
Elizabeth Gledhill on 11 Oct 1636. She was the daughter of Thomas
Gledhill of Barkisland Hall and she left a will dated 13 Oct 1657. The
two estates (Howroyde and Barkisland Hall) eventually came into the one
family. In 1642 he built Howroyde Hall, a hall and cross wings, hearth
passage house. The initials WH and EG for William and Elizabeth Horton
are above the doorway along with the inscription: "Except the Lord
build this house They Labour in vain that build" Howroyde Hall,
although only having two storeys, the design is similar to that of
Barkisland Hall. There is a large stained glass window. The Hall is
approached by a long and well-wooded drive, and occupies a commanding
position some distance removed from the village of Barkisland, which it
overlooks across a valley. Howroyde Hall in the late 1700's became the
seat of Thomas Horton, Esq. After his death Howroyde became the
seat of his wife, Lady Mary Horton.
On 16 Sep 1654, William bought Coley Hall in Halifax to pay fines
imposed by Parliament on Captain Langdale Sunderland for taking the
Royalist side in the Civil War. The Captain had been in Coley Church on
a Sunday in 1642, when he heard that the Royalists were besieging
Bradford, and he raised a unit to march to Bradford to defend
democracy. He then went on to fight in several Roundhead campaigns and
returned from the wars to live at Coley Hall. He was arrested by
supporters of the monarchy for his military activities as a Roundhead,
and was imprisoned at Ripon, where he died in 1680. The original front
of the hall was destroyed in bombardment by the Commonwealth troops.
William acquired in the transaction: the manor of Batley and
appurtenances, Coley Hall, messuages and lands in Coley and
Hipperholme, Coley Mill, seats in Halifax Church and Coley Chapel and
