From "The Victoria History of the
Counties of England", A History of
the County of Leicestershire: vol. V, published 1964, pages 116-121:
"Gumley lies eleven miles south-east of Leicester at the eastern end of
a ridge of hills which runs from Husbands Bosworth through Mowsley and
Laughton, north of the Welland valley.
Leicestershire (abbreviated Leics) is a landlocked county in central
England. It takes its name from the heavily populated City of
Leicester which has traditionally been its administrative centre, but
is now a unitary authority administratively separate from
Leicestershire. It borders onto Leicester, Rutland,
Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire and
Staffordshire, and contains part of the National Forest.
The Griffin Manor in Gumley had been acquired from Edward and Thomas
Griffin by William Horton in 1610. He acquired the messuage and 5
yardlands which he occupied. The fact that this property was also
called a manor has added to the confusion surrounding this descent and
led to the Hortons being called lords of Gumley during the 17th
century. (T.L.A.S. xxiii, 13)
From J. Nicholes, History &
Antiquities of the County of Leicester,
ii, Plate cviii: "John Horton's son-in-law, John Aldwinckle,
advertised
a sale of the estate in 1736."(this John Horton is a great
grandson of William Horton. He died in 1701 and his wife Barbara
died in 1705).
