List of nine months men mustered by Thomas Newhall, muster master for Worcester county; Captian Darby's company, Colonel Whitney's regiment; engaged for town of Harvard; mustered July 20, 1779; also, descriptive list of men raised for continental service, as returned by Seth Washburn, superintendent for Worcester county; Captain Darby's company, Colonel Whitney's regiment; age eighteen years; stature five feet six inches; complexion dark; engaged for town of Harvard; marched August 3, 1779; reprorted delivered to Ensign E. White; also, list of men raised for the six months' service and returned to Brigadier-General Paterson as having passed muster in a return dated Camp Totoway, October 25, 1780; also, pay roll for six months men raised by the town of Harvard for service in the continental army during 1780; marched from home July 19, 1780; discharged January 22, 1781; service, six months twelve days, including travel (one hundred and eighty miles) from place of discharge home."

BiographyWaterford ME Hx: in West Waterford, ME were the Houghtons. Major Jonathan and his sons Abel, Henry and Cyrus in the military; Jonathan was a Representative; and both Jonathan and Henry were deacons, and Josiah a clergyman and Lewis a physician

JWH, p. 316: "Jonathan served in the Revolutionary War, campaign aginst Burgoyne. Removed to Waterford, Me., in 1795. Petitioner for incorporation of that town in 1795. Taxpayer on its first road, 1797. Leading man in town. Select man, 1805-1807."

Little: "After the close of the war, like thousands of other young men, he looked around for a place to make a home and was attracted to Maine by the opportunities it offered to the energetic young men of that period, and went to Waterford and settled. The list of taxpayers in Waterford, 1797-1820, the former being the date of the incorporation of the town, gives Lot Seven, Range Two, as the place of abode of Jonathan Houghton. His name is on the petition for the incorporation of Waterford, December 19, 1795. About 1814 Jonathan Houghton was one of those who "signed off" from the Congregational to the Baptist church, which latter was founded there at that time. In 1805 Jonathan Houghton was one of the board of selectman, and in 1807 he was moderator. November 9, 1830, the Universalist Society in Waterford was formed, and the name of Jonathan Houghton is one of the forty-six on the list. This may have been the son of the first Jonathan. Major Houghton was a cooper and farmer. He and his sons, Abel, Henry and Cyrus, were in military life; Jonathan was representative, and both he and Henry were deacons; Josiah was a clergyman, and Lewis a physician. Major Houghton married (first) Rachel Hall; (second) Mrs. Mary Bryant..."

MLM: He was among the company which attempted settlement at Waterford in 1774, but the War prevented any habitations being built. The Oxford Propriety (Albany town) petition was signed in Andover, MA, Dec. 29, 1788 for land between Sudbury, Canada, and Waterford plantation, then in Cumberland County. A Major in the militia - a tax-payer in Waterford, 1797, but must have come to Waterford some time before, as his last child was born in Harvard in Feb. 16, 1790. Perhaps he had tarried in Andover or a nearby town meanwhile. He located on Lot #7, range 2 now (1879) owned by a Stearnes. The 1790 census listed him with: 1-1-3, so his wife must have passed away by then. A cooper and farmer. A selectman of Waterford in 1805; moderator, 1807, also collector of tases. Represented Waterford in the Legislature, 1850. He and son, Henry, were deacons in the church. P. 52, History of Waterford, lists Thomas Houghton between Norridgewock and Seven Mile Brook, Lincoln Co. Idem, p. 44, Lincoln Co., Thomas Houghton, Jr., Sandy River from its mouth to Carr's plantation, with 1-0-2. On Dec. 19, 1795, petition for a town, signing with Jonathan were Samuel Sampson, Samuel Brigham, Richard Brigham, Phineas Sampson, Israel Hale, David Whitcomb, Thomas and Daniel Green of Rowley, MA. The Sandersons too were from Rowley and a part of Waterford is called "Rowley." The eastern 3 tiers of the grant for the township to be included with the Cummings' purchase, now Norway, ME. Asa Johnson, also participated in the campaign against Burgoyne.13,31,32,3,33
ProblemWhich Jonathan? for dd, 1790 census; same dds; same 2 marriages; likely Major Jonathan, son of John and Esther;
DAR correction: "Jonathan [CJV: son of Israel] did not marry Rachel Hale & Mary Bryant or have service given. See p. 338"; cites as authorities for corrections for line of Jonathan (JWH, #448, p. 342; VR of Harvard MA; Hx of Waterford, ME pp. 61, 63, 183; Maine Genealogy, Vol. 2, p. 903; & records of family & Bible records of Mrs. Frances Henderson Cross, DAR)34
ResearchChildren data given by JWH is probably wrong; Maj. Jonathan Houghton of Harvard who settled in Waterford ME is son of Lt. John Houghton; all children listed for Jonathan, son of John, are given by JWH (p. 338) for Jonathan, son of Israel; Waterford ME Hx gives Jonathan as coming from Harvard; note same dds35,16

BiographyB. H. Houghton, p. 1: "Noah was the 2nd child and 2nd son of Daniel and Susannah Pierce (Price) Houghton."; p. 6-12:Patty Fessenden was "married October 12, 1808 to Noah Houghton, Townshend, Vermont. Noah was 19 years old and Patty was 15. The record of their marriage is on file in the State of Vermont Public Records Division:
Groom - Noah Houghton
Bride - Patty Fessenden
Date of Marriage - Oct. 12, 1808
Residence of Bride and Groom - Townshend, VT
Name of Party Officiating - Silas Ball, Justice of the Peace

Noah Houghton appears in the 1810 census as the head of the household in
Wardsboro (Windham County) Vermont:

1 - Male of 16 & under 26
1 - Female of 16 & under 26
1 - Female under 10

...In 1816 Noah and his brother, William, along with David Carrier, John
Fessenden, Sr. and Hugh and Abraham Whittaker settled in Apolacon Township,
Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. Noah was listed as one of the first
blacksmiths in the town of Little Meadows in the CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF
SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, pgs. 465 and 468, and the HISTORY OF
SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY, PENNSLVANIA, pg. 425. From the census record for
Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, 1820 - Apalacon Township:
Head of family - Noah Houghton
1 - Male under 10
1 - Male 26 -45
2 - Female under 10
1 - Female 10 -16
1 - Female 26 -45.

In the 1830 census in Clay Township, Onondaga County, New York, Noah again
appears as the head of family:

Head of family - Noah Houghton
1 - Male - 15 - 20
1 - Male - 30 - 40
1 - Female - 5 - 10
1 - Female - 30 -40

...Noah next appears in the 1840 census in Michigan. At this time he would be 50 years old. In the census record for Lenawee County, Woodstock Township:
Head of family - Noah Houghton
Male - 5 & under 10 -1
40 & under 50 - 1
Female - 10 & under 15 - 1
15 & under 20 - 1
40 & under 50 - 1

...What route Noah and his family took from New York to Michigan is not known, but it could be assumed, it was by water because he lived close to the banks of the Erie Canal in New York. Most of Noah's first family remains a puzzle. From the early census records, it appears that Noah and Patty had several daughters. Patty must have died in Michigan in 1840 after the census was taken or in 1841. No record has been found to-date. Unfortunately Lenawee County Courthouse burned in 1852 and all of the early records were destroyed...

Noah appears in the state census in Michigan in 1845 in Woodstock Township,
Lenawee County:

Head of family - Noah Houghton
Males - under 10 = 1
10 - 21 = 1
21 - 45 = 1
Total Males = 3
Females - 10 - 21 = 1
21 - 45 = 1
Total Females = 2

Copies of deeds show that Noah purchased two pieces of land in Lenawee County - one for $40.00 on March 18, 1846 and the second on April 6, 1847 from Matthew and Sarah Busby.

Noah's family in Michigan are descendants through his marriage to Sarah Smith who was born in England. The 1850 census is the first census to list the individual family members' names and the following record appears again from Woodstock Township, Lenawee County, Michigan:

Noah Houghton - 60 - Born N.H. - Blacksmith
Sarah - 46 - England
Henry - 7
Wesley - 4

Again in Woodstock Township, Lenawee County, Michigan, the 1860 census record reads:

Noah Houghton - 69 - Born N.H. - Farmer
Sarah - 53 - England
Henry E. - 17
Wesley - 14
Value of real estate - $900
Value of person - $300

In 1870 Noah and Sarah were living with Wesley and wife Mary in Woodstock
Township, Lenawee County, Michigan. The census as the head of the househould:
Wesley - 24 - Farmer - born in Michigan
Mary - 17 - Keeping House - born in Ireland
Noah - 81 - Farmer - born in Vermont
Sarah - 63 - Keeping House - born in England

Noah died August 3, 1873...

Betty Houghton Williams was told that Noah and Sarh's house burned, and they
lost all of their possessions. We think they lived with their older son, Henry E. Houghton in Ingham County, Michigan until Noah's death in 1873. Noah is buried in Leslie Cemetary, Ingham County, Michigan."
